Canon S3

great job so far! :thumbsup2
keep us posted as to how you like this camera..i totally forgot about a ton of reward points i have with sony ( unless they expire)

In case you missed it you can adjust the flash output on this camera. I missed that in ours the first week we had it.

Hey that cheatsheet thing looks cool. Thanks. I find the camera menu & buttons VERY intuitive, but it might be handy to have that. :thumbsup2

I still love my camera too. Got it end of Sept, I think.

I love my S3 too. ONLY thing I DON'T LIKE is I continue to get green glowing eyes when using flash in all shots of my cat....who happens to have green eyes. :confused3

No, I didn't know you could adjust the flash output. I guess I haven't gotten that far in the owner's manual. That could come in handy.

That is the same effect as red eyes on people. It is usually worse on animals b/c their pupils are larger. It is a problem with any camera that uses an onboard flash that is relatively close to the lens. Apart from flashing the animals with a light, which would likely run them away, there is nothing that you can do when a flash is used. External flashes cure this problem.

Nice rich colors, good focus, I'd say you are definitely on your way. Smart, by the way, allowing time to learn the camera before taking it on a trip!!:thumbsup2

Thanks, its just worse with this camera than any other camera I've ever owned (with this same cat). She's a black/brown/orange torteshell cat with green eyes.

We have a green eyed tortie, too. I haven't had any luck taking a flash picture of her no matter what camera I've used (we currently have the S3 as well). Actually, even my blue-eyed siamese has glowy eyes when we use flash. I've actually found that I don't really need flash for most pictures I take of them, though-- even inside. Here's a picture of Chloe I posted on the pet thread:

Welcome to the club, I love my S3! It's a new addiction! I was driving to work and the fog had left ice on the tree limbs and everything, first thought wasnt oh how pretty, oh no, it was "I wish I had my camera with me!"

The same thing happens to my cats too! Mostly with my orange and white cat. If he is looking at the camera his eyes get the green glow. I can't seem to get around that.
I think the reason he doesn't have the glow eyes in the above picture is because he just woke up ;)
My orange cat I don't get the glow eyes as much :confused3

My orange cat has green eyes and my other cat has almost like golden/yellow eyes.

I seem to have a bigger problem with this on my Canon S3 then my old 35mm camera.

I thought that I would ask this here, since it seems a lot of people have the s3. I was wondering if it has the feature that tells what a picture option is for when you change that option. I am debating between the s3 and the sonyh2, and the sony has this option. To clarify, if you put it on landscape, there is a brief sentence that states what landscape is for.

Wouldn't some difusing material over the flash help with red/green eye.
you can use anything from tissues to paper or translucent plastic.

If that does not help then use an apaque object in front of the flash and bouce it up or sideways...

I read somewhere about using a bounce technique, but I didn't know what that meant. Thanks, I'll try that. She's 18 & has kidney disease. Any good pictures I can get at this point would mean alot. :thumbsup2

I finally got around to changing all my photos to be directly in the post. So, the fact that my acct is password protected shouldn't matter any more. You should be able to see the photos again. yeah!!! Sorry, no idea why first one in each post won't come out as photo...but remains as a link. duh!!! Just click it. Sorry.

No, it doesn't give you a description of what each shooting mode is for. When you switch modes though, it DOES show you in the screen/viewfinder what the new mode is, but no description.

I scanned the last 3-4 pages of posts and didn't see any on the new Canon TX1 being released this month. Has anyone done any research on this at all? Any opinions other than what the review sites are saying?

I have been salivating over the S3 IS for so long and was going to get it for my graduation gift. I was looking to see if a new model (S4??) was being released, and I came upon the TX1. The optical zoom is slightly less (but enough IMHO), but it also have the ISO 1600 equivalent that the S3 doesn't. It weighs half as much as the S3. It includes the oh so important OIS. I am just so confused. :crazy2:

So for you experts here on the photography boards, which would you buy if you were to choose between the two? And why?

Thanks for your insight :)

If you ever want to do any manual controls, then go with the "S" line. The new one is intended to be smaller and more point and shoot. It is like the "SD" line that only allows minor adjustments like ISO and exposure compensation. From what I read, there is no way to control the aperture or shutter speed. Also, the ISO 1600 is most likely going to be worthless. I have yet to see a single non-DSLR camera produce a usable image at 1600. The sensor is just too small. I consider that a marketing tool and nothing else.

There may still be an updated "S" come out soon.

I enjoyed looking at all the photos. This thread has helped me tremendously, I have had my Canon S3 for about a week now, and I am STILL figuring out all of the cool things that it will do. I love it!

Thanks DIS! :disrocks:

Thanks Kevin. I currently have the Kodak DX7590 and have never used any manual options, mostly because I haven't had time to play with it. But I really want to get better pictures and learn to use manual controls. I wonder if they will release an S4 or equivalent before mid May (giving me time to play before our Disney trip). Hmmm...

WARNING to S3 owners!! One of the things I love about my S3 is the Sports mode. This is also one of the few modes on the camera where you can use continuous shutter - just hold down the shutter button, and it takes a picture every 2 secs or so. BE VERY CAREFUL!!!

We went to our high school's winter guard / winter percussion indoor show Saturday. There were a ton of schools performing; a new group went on every 8 minutes. So, allowing 2 min to set up and 2 min to tear down, each group's show lasted around 4 min. I only took photos of OUR school's performances, so it was 4 min for percussion and 4 min for guard. Well, as usual, I got carried away; when I got home and downloaded my photos to the computer, I discovered that I had taken 122 shots!!:scared1: Even after deleting the ones that were blurry or somebody had a weird look on their face, I still ended up with 80+ pictures! What's even funnier - my kids weren't even performing!!:rotfl:

Of course, I reminded myself that at least it's digital; can you imagine the processing charge if I had been using film?!!!
