Canon S3

Should I get rechargeable batteries(NIMH or whatever:) ) or get the energizer lithiums for my new Canon S3.

It depends on your style. If you plan on averaging 50 shots a month, then the lithiums are great b/c they will last forever. If you plan on using it to its potential, then NiMh is the only way to go.

I will be going to WDW in a few weeks. Would the lithium last throughout my vacation?

I would say rechargeables as I go through a set or 2 of charged batteries PER DAY on a trip.

If you plan to shot lots, I would go with rechargeables.

I think that Energizer e2 lithiums are a perfectly viable alternative.

With my S3, I took about 800 photos plus approximately 75 minutes of video on our 6 day trip and used just over 1 set of e2 lithiums.

I changed the batteries only once - Thursday night during the Pirate and Princess Party. The previous set had probably about 150 still photos shot on it before we left for our trip.

I would agree that if you are a heavy user on an everyday basis (if you do lots of shooting at times other than special occasions or vacations) then rechargables are probably still better, but other than vacation, I take about 100 photos a month, probably and the e2 are the best - I never have to worry about whether my batteries have a charge, even if I've left my camera sitting for the last 6 weeks without remembering to recharge the NiMHs.

I guess both would work but the rechargeables are better for the environment and cheaper in the long run.

We have 3 sets of good rechargeables and have taken pics for 3 1/2 years and it only cost us about $60 with the charger.

How many pictures should I be able to get out of a charge on NiMH rechargeables??

I am looking at these 2 cameras and would like to know which one u guys think is better. For those of you that have either, post pics taken by the camera if possible.

At that level, I say go out and handle both in person and then go with the one you like. Our sample shots and our opinions will not mean much. If you want to compare shots, go to http://www.steves-digicams.com because he takes the same shots for each review.

Both are good cameras. I agree, go and try out both. I bought my wife the Canon S3 for Christmas. We already used SD memory cards for my Nikon D50 (I know what you're going to say about a house divided:confused3 ), so that was a major contibuting factor. She likes it a lot.

Within months of purchasing my S2, Canon came out with the S3. Although I am very pleased with my S2, I would have waited for the S3, had I known.
Does anyone have any information about what the predecessor to the S3 is going to be and how soon it will be released? I have 2 trips to WDW planned for this year (one in July, and one the end of Nov).

My guess is that they will follow up the S3 with the S4.

I've been mulling over getting a new camera-----I have an inexpensive nikon P+S and going on the boards alot, catalogs etc, then to my surprise my dh comes home with the canon!!-----Problem is---we leave for disney on thursday!!!!!!!! So....I have a few questions that I hope you can help me with.......

Can I expect to take this and shoot on auto mode and be ok???

My favorite parade is spectromagic-----love to get pics of it......the last camera you could put on sport mode and get pretty decent shots for that type camera---------what specifically should I set the S3 to to take shots that are great????

My other camera had prob with low light and movement----sport mode offers no flash-etc, we will be at the P+P party at night, so alot of low light situations------what to do with the canon????

Is there a book other than the manual for this camera that will help me out??

I'm getting a little (ok, ALOT) nervous about having a brand new camera and possibly goofing up the family pictures on our trip:scared1: :scared1:

Thanks for listening to me rant and grovel..............

:headache:

I just want to say congratulations on your S3:cheer2: !! I have one also. Give your DH and big kiss for getting this camera.

Sorry that I can't help with your more technical questions, but for everyday, normal light pics, the auto mode will do just fine. I haven't been anywhere since getting mine to really "play" with it.

Have a great time on your trip!!

Yes, but it is heavier to carry than your P&S. Also, use the P setting, not the Auto. They are the same but P will not fire the flash if you don't need it.

The S3 also has a sport mode. Use it, or you can try the Night scene or Night snapshot modes. The second one is under the Scn menu options. You should try out the two settings to see which work best for you, although there are many other ways to take night scenes.

My other camera had prob with low light and movement----sport mode offers no flash-etc, we will be at the P+P party at night, so alot of low light situations------what to do with the canon????

This will always be a problem. Low light + movement = blur. Use a high ISO (400 or 800), which will allow the apeture to operate more quickly. Note that the pictures will be more grainy using a higher ISO, but at least you will get the memories you want.

Is there a book other than the manual for this camera that will help me out??

Yes. Click here

But, any good photo book will help. Try Understanding Digital Photography by Bryan Peterson.

This is a great camera and I think you will be suprised by how well your pics come out. If I were you, I'd PRACTICE before you leave on your trip, especially some night scene stuff. This will give you a good idea what you need to be concerned with when your doing it for real.

And, enjoy. That's why we take pictures.
