Canon S3

I'm interested in getting the Canon S3, but I have a couple of questions.
1) Is the IS always on? Or do I need to invoke it when needed?
2) Can you look through the view finder and have the screen on at the same time?

You have the option of leaving the IS on or off.
You can't use both the viewfinder and the lcd at the same time.

Welcome to the club, I love my new Canon S3!!!!!!

THANK YOU for posting this...I've been thinking of getting one, because we have a BB gift card for just over $300, but with tax and everything, it would be another $100 out of pocket for the Canon S3. BUT, if I can get our local BB to price match, then it won't be much at all out of pocket! Wish me luck -- I'm going to go for it tomorrow!!

Good Luck iwynlea! Let us know how it goes. Call the Office Depots and see if any of them have one first, so you can tell BB that.

Good luck iwynlea! I took a couple of pictures with mine today. The indoor shots were so much nicer than my Sony's shots :). The proof will be in the pudding tomorrow for a holiday family get-together.

Well, I went by OD, and they were out of the Canon S3, but I figured I'd give BB a try anyway...maybe they wouldn't call to check. I had a kid helping me who clearly had never even heard of BB's price match policy before, didn't think they could price match a percent off, had to ask a manager, etc. etc. So he did call to check, and of course OD said they were out, so they won't match the price to sell me the camera. Shoot!! Oh well, maybe someone next week will have a similar sale and I can get it then! I need it soon, though, since DH graduates college in a week!

Office Depot has it again this week, for $349. There is a $50 mail in rebate for it. Have you tried calling your OD and seeing if any in your area have one in stock...that is what I did. Because the one four towns away had one, I was able to get mine.

Thanks all for the good advice...we ended up buying the camera anyway, with a 12% off coupon we received in the mail as BB Rewards members. It came it about $352, and then we bought the 4-year warranty for another $90 (we're both too clumsy to NOT buy the warranty!). Now, I just have to decide if I really want to keep it...LOL!

If I can get my MIL to buy my old camera from me for $100 (about what I could get on ebay for it), I'll feel better about the splurge. With some recent unexpected bills around here, I feel guilty about spending money on myself.

Anyway, not intending to hijack the OP! Thanks again for all your great advice and encouragement! :thumbsup2

Hi all,

Looking for a good gift for my uncle (it is a group present). He is currently a slr user, but has been thinking of moving to digital. I think he wants something smaller than a digital slr. We are trying to decide between the S3 or A620. I know they are different cameras, but which do you think an old school 35mm user would prefer? Would the p&s A620 not have a good enough zoom? Would he like the 12x better? Thoughts!

thanks!

c

I love my S3....the zoom is just awesome....as well as the image stabilization. I'm not sure on the other P & S that you are looking at....but, if he is an SLR user, he would probably appreciate the manual mode that the S3 has that most of the P & S do not have.

I have both the A610 and S3, I love the S3 for the zoom and IS. As much as I love the size and picture quality of the A610 the zoom on the S3 sure is nice.

thanks you guys! I think we are going to go with the s3...right now at staples there is a mail in rebate for a free photo printer too... :thumbsup2 I think our uncle will definitely get more use out of the zoom than the extra MP on the A620...

thanks again!! :goodvibes

Just an update: My camera from Dell shipped TODAY! Yikes! I was going to get that order canceled today, before I leave on my 10 day trip tomorrow, but too late. I hadn't done it yet, because my friend was considering buying it, but then said no. I hope they don't leave it sitting on my front porch, like they did the rest of my order that already shipped out last week.

Oopsie! Can you call FedEx and have them "hold" your packages for you?

My sister works at Staples and can get me the S3 for $300 (reg. $400) PLUS a $50 mail-in rebate on it. Should I take advantage of the offer? From what I've seen, it's pretty good price for a pretty awesome camera.

:confused3
