Canon 7D

i had seen one on another site a few days back but not the review...the ai macro focus sounds great! and the price is not bad really.
but why in the world they are still putting the 28-135 with it rather than one of the lenses they released boggles my mind....don't they know i am trying to get rid of mine and they are flooding the market ?:rotfl:

Dpreview has a hands-on preview as well. It would certainly be on my shopping list if I could swing the $1700. What's really interesting is that it is not full frame unlike the 5D. Does this mean Canon's only FF DSLR will be the 1D line? Or, are they going to have new a body between the XD and 1D series?

FYI, they also introduced some interesting lenses: an EF-S 15-85mm F3.5-5.6 IS USM, an EF-S 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS USM, and an EF 100 F2.8 IS Macro, which can give 2-stops stabilization at 1.0x magnification.

Actually, the Dpreview press release photo has it with the new 15-85. From the Canon release:
"Both lenses match the style and performance of Canon’s new APS-C sensor camera – the Canon EOS 7" leading me to believe they're going to market the 7D with one, or both, of these lenses.

the canon blurb says the 28-135 although the newer lenses would make more sense to me, why market one of the oldest IS lenses with it unless they have boxes and boxes in some warehouse somewhere they are trying to dump off on the unsuspecting public ;).

the macro does have the new IS but it's an L and around $1000...course the upside is there will probably be some dumping of used 100mm non IS macros or maybe a rebate for new non IS ones once it come out so maybe i can get one of them cheaper than now. and 800 for the 15-85? wowsa, it better be great for that price

It's a bit odd that they are calling this the 7D and not keeping the name in line with the other APS-C sensors in the XXD class. At any rate, this one looks to be a sports and wildlife photographer's dream with 8fps on a crop body. The new AF system is very interesting.

For me, the high-ISO performance is critical. The 7D will be an expensive camera; if it doesn't show any great high-ISO improvement I guess I'll have to keep saving for the 5DII.

But for APS-C cameras, the new lenses look very nice indeed...

the price was listed at 1899 with the lens, 1699 with out which i think is comparable to the d300 . considering the 50d is still around $1200+ i wouldn't consider that expensive.

The 5DMkII body-only is £1928 at www.warehouseexpres.com. The 7D is £1699. Now, I know that it's new and the price will drop, but even so... if there's not a significant improvement over other APS-C cameras in high-ISO performance I'd rather go the few extra yards for the 5D.

I shoudl say that my main use for the camera would be stage photography, which very much requires good high-ISO performance.

I also find it more than a little outrageous that the price in US$ is the same as in £, when the exchange rate is currently £1 = $1.60, but that's just my tough luck...

Who simply cannot convince himself that a £1700 camera is "not expensive" :-)

Their are samples up on imaging-resource. In short, the ISO is a bit better than the 50D.

Just because they released a model with a crop fram sensor in the #D convention does not mean that entire line is going to be crop frame. Expect there to be a successor to the 5D announced in the future along with a successor to the 50D.

I would still have rather seen less pixels and more dynamic range but Canon didn't ask me. ;) One question is how the camera handles HDR, can it be set up to take more than three frames? The AEB appears to be expanded to +/- 3 stops instead of the previous 2 stops but that is still short of what some other cameras offer.

The bottom line is will it take photos that I have missed because my Xsi will not capture them, and the answer to that is "probably not".

The 15-85 lens looks very interesting, I may have to buy one for DW so I can borrow it!

I was thinking the same thing that the 15-85mm lens could be a great lightweight versatile lens for good lighting conditions. Looks to be pretty high quality if Canon is calling for a MSRP of $800 on it.

The 7D is looking to be quite the camera, I'm impressed but I'm also glad that this isn't the replacement to the 50D to make me regret not waiting for this announcement ;). $1700 is a bit much for my purposes.

Some seriously great improvments (100% and 1x viewfinder!, new AF/metering, 8 FPS), but man.. 18 MP on APS-C?

I have used a 5D since it came out and think its darn good body. I would spend a little extra on the 5D before I bought the 7D. Those sample pics speak for themselves.

Not totally on topic but...

I was upset to see the Macro lens release until I looked at the price!! It should also be noted that it's an EF 100 f/2.8L with IS. Price tag right now is $1049, and current 100mm f/2.8 is $599. I've gotten some amazing shots without IS from my macro so I'm not too disappointed they came out with the L series and I missed it. Maybe someday I'll sell my current and splurge for the L, but that's not today ;)

You have to realize that they are two entirely different cameras. The 7D sacrifices the full frame sensor for speed and AF. It would be much better than the 5D at shooting sports or any fast action.

Of course the 5D wins at high ISO, it has a full frame sensor after all. But it is not as "fast" as this new one is. Obviously there is also more bells and whistles as well that are exclusive to the 7D.

The 7D has a MSRP of $1700 and the camera will probably eventually be sold for less than that. So I bet the end difference between the 5D(not mark II) and 7D will probably be around $4-500. That's a fair difference.

One of the really interesting things about this lens is the hybrid IS system which can compensate for shift movement as well as angular movement. This be a boon for shooting insects and the like which are tough to do on a tripod (at least for me). It also has a tripod ring, which is a nice touch. I agree that $1000+ for a macro lens is too steep for me. (I shoot with the EF-S 60 since I got it for $350 or so refurbished from B&H.)

It looks like they are introducing a new line. So they'll have the intro level camera(s), the xxD series, and the 7D series for APS-C, the 5D and 1Ds series for full frame, and the 1D series for APS-H.

I question how long the 7 series will survive. As processing speeds go up and fab costs come down, I'm not sure if there is a purpose to having that many APS-C price points. I suspect that over time most of the pro and serious amateur market will migrate to full frame. That's the future, though, and they needed something in that niche for today.

I'm a little surprised that the much rumored replacement for the 70-200 f/2.8 IS lens didn't materialize. On the other hand, the rumors themselves seemed odd because that lens isn't in a big need for an update. They'd be better served updating the 100-400 (or introducing a competitor to Nikon's 200-400), or producing a 24-70 f/2.8 with IS.

I'm really surprised that there hasn't been more discussion here on the new Sony. The 850 is a high res full frame camera for $2,000. It's an amazing amount of camera for the money. It's not an ideal WDW camera because high ISO shooting is it's achille's heal, but for people not needing high ISO capability, it's got awesome performance per $. They've still got a lot of work ahead of them, but I think Sony's going to be a major player in the pro market someday.
