Canon 400D (Rebel Xti, Kiss X)

Welcome to the DSLR world. One piece of advice while practicing before your trip; learn the effect the aperture has on depth of field. On a p&s, almost everything is in focus even at the widest aperture, but not so on a DSLR.

You are going to love it. Hope to see some of you shots posted here. :)

Hi all, I am new to this board have been lurking for quite some time, though.
I am looking forward to all the great advice this board has to offer. One question I have: I am looking to purchase the Canon XTi. I have windows vista installed on my computer. Is this compatible with the XTi? I know one of you experts will know. Thanks a lot.

I would be extremely surprised if it were not, but IMO it does not matter. I believe that everyone is better off with a USB2 card reader. Even though the XTi is likely USB2 compatible, a card reader is going to be faster and will save valuable battery power. I have a Kingston model that was bundled with a card for almost nothing.

Thank you UKcatfan for your reply. But, please excuse my ignorance as I am just learning. Just what is a USB2 card reader? Something to do with the USB port on the computer tower? Thanks again.

Card reader is used to transfer photos to your pc so you can do what ever you want with them.

You either transfer photos to your PC by hooking the camera up directly to the PC.

Or by

Taking memory out of the camera and putting it into card reader which is hooked up to your pc, most connect to your pc via USB port. But some PCs already have built in memory card readers. With this there is no need for your camera to be compatible with VISTA(or other).

Thank you both for your replies. My computer does have the built in memory card reader.

UBS2 is just the 2.0 specification of the standard. The port is exactly the same. It is much faster than version 1. If your pc is using Vista, then I can almost guarantee that it is a USB2. Your built in card reader is likely a USB2 connection, but there is no guarantee. My pc has a built in reader, but it is unfortunately a USB1 version even though my ports are USB2!?!? You can tell if it is a USB2 based on how long it takes to clear a card. For example, a 1GB card takes about a minute or less on the USB2, but over ten minutes on the built in reader.

I recently purchased both a new Canon XTi and a new laptop, installed with Vista.

Unfortunately, Vista was not compatible with the XTI software. But the Canon website has some drivers you can download. The whole process probably took about 10-15 minutes and were good to go. Good luck.

I purchased the XTI back in July I have the standard old kit lens (18-55mm). As I am preparing for this trip, I am wondering if I should consider getting a lens with a bit more zoom. But as I am still a novice and am not willing to fork out a lot of cash (that could be used on mickey t-shirts!), I am curious, will my kit lens be sufficient?

Any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated. I am also interested in any other Disney with an XTI tips you might have!

IMO the kit lens maybe sufficient, but it is no where near IDEAL for some situations. It will be more than good enough most shots during the day, except of course those requiring more reach.

For night time shots one of the cheapest lenses(around $80) around might help you, the Canon 50mm F/1.8. It is a prime lens, meaning no zoom so proper positioning is very important. It also can give you very shallow depth of focus, which can be good or bad depending on what you want to accomplish.

We have an XTi and took it to WDW for the first time this past May. To give you an idea of the types of pictures the kit lens produces, take a look at our trip report (the first few pictures in our trip report were taken with our HP Point & Shoot but the remainder were taken with the XTi). We think it did a decent job :thumbsup2

My brand new XTI gives me a "busy" signal pretty much after every picture I take and takes 5-10 seconds before I can take another picture. This was making me crazy at DS's football game on Friday night.
Any ideas what is causing this?

Were you using the flash?? I have read some reviews where people were taking pictures with the flash and took about 10 pictures back to back it would lock up with a busy signal. We have an XTi and luckily this hasn't happened to us.

Bonny

i could be you have it set for raw but it shouldn't do that till the buffer is full ( not sure how many that is on the xti,on the xt it's 4 for raw) and then i don't think it takes 10 sec to clear but it will say busy till it 's clear

Sounds to me like it is taking a long time to write the photo data to your memory card. It could be that your card is damaged (or about to go ka-put) or that your card has a very low write speed.

I have gotten the busy signal with mine only after I have taken a bunch of pics with the flash on. Never when not using the flash.

Hi all, I am a newbie, but a lurker learning from you all. I called bhphotovideo yesterday and ordered my Canon XTi. It should arrive sometime this week.
Can't wait.:)

I'd second the choice of getting the 50mm prime. Once you've played with a prime, you'll want to use it whenever possible due to superior sharpness and color, plus you gain a huge amount of low-light ability, which helps tremendously at Disney, where the kit lens is just not going to cut it for most night or indoor shots w/o a flash or tripod.

Welcome to the wonderful world of the SLR! You're going to enjoy it!
