My DS 12 has had a canker sore on the inside of his bottom lip for a little over a week. It looked like it was getting better and this morning he said that it doesn't hurt anymore even though it is still there. But when I looked, his lip is a little swollen now. He said there is no pain at all. Has anyone else seen/experienced this before? I wouldn't think much of it normally but we are leaving for WDW on Saturday. Thanks for any thoughts:thumbsup2

My canker sores last 10-14 days. After the mid-cycle acute pain disappears, I still have the sore for awhile although it doesn't really hurt.

Depending on where it is, I will either keep biting it or, if on the inside of my bottom lip, I tend to abrade it all the time and it will still continue to swell. Totally normal.

My grandma always said that if you got a canker sore you needed to eat more green, leafy vegetables--don't know if it is true or not but I still do that.

DS18 gets a lot of canker sores-and doesn't eat much for green leafy veges :lmao:. It was so bad at one point that our dentist had a special cream made up for him (no idea what was in it).

There are plenty of over the counter med you can apply to help it heal but it certainly isn't something to really worry about on vacation. Just have some oragel or something along if it hurts.

My son used to get them fairly often. There are OTC medications that can help; but you can also get prescriptions; those worked better for him. I think he got valtrex and also some ointment, and I can't remember the name. Since they did re-occur frequently, our pediatrician wrote the RX's with several refills, so when he felt them coming on, we were able to get the meds right away.

My son gets them a LOT. We swear by Orajel Antispetic Rinse...half capful swished in mouth for 10 second 4-5 times a day. Helps the pain, and promotes healing.

Canker sore or cold sore? If it's on the outside it's a cold sore. Your local healthfood store might carry Teatree mouthwash, and or Cankerspots. They both work well. The spots you put a little dot on at night and the medicine is absorbed over night.

Adding Lysine and Acidophiles supplements can help too. The virus that causes canker sores and/or cold sores will diminish if you keep up with these. Yogart with active cultures is good too.

For a cold sore, Herpecin L (with lysine and lemonbalm) is available at your local drug store, probably in your super market. It's like a chapstick. Works great for my dd, better than abreva. Doesn't sting or stink or numb, just keeps the sore from cracking and the lysine and lemonbalm kill the virus.

I actually had a weird canker sore breakout right before I went to WDW back in December. It was multiple sores and it was crazy painful. I think it was mostly just from lots of stress at the time.

None of the OTC stuff worked for the canker sores since they are on the inside, but a pharmacist at Walmart told me a secret solution that really really helped.

Benedryl and Milk of Magnesia. Take the cup that comes with the Benedryl and fill it half and half with the Benedryl and MoM, then gargle it and swish it around a lot to coat your mouth. Make sure you don't swallow it though. It started feeling better almost immediately and cleared up completely in about 2 days. It was fabulous.

Yep.....the dentist I worked for years ago always recommended this. The MOM helps with the inflamation and we all know what benedryl does.

My son 12 has them horribly constantly I say its stress it sure isn't a food issue we kept a food diary to make sure it wasnt that.
nothing really works I am interested in trying the ben/mom mix.
for the bendryl it is obviosly the liquid form.. but is it a specific one.
like ben allergy or something??
thanks.

A paste of plain asprin is suppose to work. Might try that before you get any over counter stuff.

Opps that wouldn't work if it is inside mouth. Sorry not awake yet. If it is outside asprin will do wonders

Thank you all so much. I guess I will see how it is after school and take it from there. I had just never seen the swelling before with a canker sore so I thought I would ask. Thanks again for all the suggestions!

KANKA=great stuff. You can get it over the counter and the stuff rocks!! Every once in a while my kids will get a canker sore from their braces. It heals it up within a day:thumbsup2

I was one to put salt on mine growing up....seemed to work!

My dentist told me the next time I got a canker sore to come in and they would take care of it.

My DD8 just had one the very same place except she was in a lot of pain with it. Anyway, none of the OTC things worked. So, I did one capful of hydrogen peroxide mixed with 1 capful of water. I then used a q-tip to apply it to the canker. After it bubbled for a bit I used Milk of Magnesia and applied it directly to the canker using the q-tip. Gone within 3 days! It's important not to touch the sore with your finger as you will be introducing more bacteria. Good luck!

I grew up having canker sore outbreaks, sometime 10-15 sores at a time.

The only thing that ever helped me: Listerine.

Hold it in your mouth, directly on the sore, as long as you can stand it. Then keep it there a while longer. Hold it there as long as you possibly can.

Not only did it clear up the sores, but it gave me a lot of relief from the pain (after you spit it out!) and reduced the number of outbreaks.

My DD gets these sometimes, we used to take a Vitamin E capsule, pierce it with a needle or pin and squeeze it onto the sore, now we are able to buy Vitamin E in liquid form so we put it on a Q tip and apply it to her sore. They are gone within a week.

Thank you all so much. I am definitely going to try some of these the next time he gets one. For now he has no pain even though the sore is still there and it is still a little swollen around it.

Saw treatment recommendations on Dr Oz. He says they typically should only last 3-5 days and yes Milk of Magnesia is good and so isn't putting a wet black tea bag on it. Also alot of toothpaste's are the root cause of canker sores. Try getting one without sodium laurel sulfate in it. Like Tom's of Maine toothpaste.
