Candy Art Vent...

I have to say that whlie paying a pretty penny does help the feeling of entitlement I don't totally agree. I really believe that more and more people have begun to feel entitled everywhere. Oh, they ran out of the on sale tv's at Walmart, no problem pitch a fit, your kid didn't get picked for the basketball team, again no problem pitch a fit to the school. I mean i guess I could go on and on about it. Don't get me wrong there are plenty of good people in the world, but there are plenty of the entitled ones too.

I'm a bit angered @ WDW for their complicity (if this is the true reason). I can see the food safety angle, maybe they should stick with that story.

I am sure they will but i believe the reason she gave. People are very aggressive about what they can get for free...and not caring that *somebody* has to pay for their free stuff. We were taught that children grow out of the ego centric mind set around 13 or 14 but it seems now a days they never grow out of it. Besides, if it was a hygiene issue then it could not be donated either...

I think they should sell the candy creations to the highest bidder. :lmao: But actually, I am glad they are going to a children's hospital, if that story is true. The thing that made no sense to me was why was she even still making them, if they were then just getting rid of them. That was when it was the sanitary story, because I would hope if they felt they were unsanitary for the crowds, they also know they would be unsanitary for sick kids in the hospital.

Hey!!!! I wasn't the first response on this thread!!!! That's not FAIR!!! This and all other threads should be shut down and no others should be started.

What a shame. I'm sure they just got sick of the complaints.

I think too many people don't have the brains or the balls to tell their own kids, "Sure, it would have been fun for you to be picked. But you were not, so let's be happy for the child who was."

:thumbsup2

I've never seen the Candy Lady, so it doesn't bother me (or my child, I'm sure) that she can't give those away. I don't ever remember a situation where I felt like complaining because my child didn't get picked at random for something. I guess my brain just doesn't work like that.

I've never been to Jedi Training, but from what I understand they had to change the choosing of kids for that as well, because people were complaining that their child was not picked. I don't get it. Maybe partially, because my kids are not much into being in the shows, but as for Myuki, I always told my kids there was a very small chance they would get chosen. They never were, and they were completely fine with that.

I will disagree with this one, totally different thing. The way they have it now is fair and reasonable. The way they had it before was just plain annoying and heartbreaking.
You watch your poor kid willingly sit thru 3 shows hoping upon hope to be picked and never getting picked while the kid next to him gets chosen time and time again, and you will understand why they changed this.
Candy lady makes a candy piece and she gives it away to whomever in the audience, not many kids are going to be heartbroken they didnt get picked. However, if they were getting compliants and the reason was because kids wanted it and werent getting picked, then they should simply do what they did for jdei training. you can stand in line and at one of the candy making performances you for sure will get a candy. Then, for those whom it is that important for, they can stand in line. Somehow, I think there will be just a handful of kids willing to wait thru any number of shows just for a candy, and if they are, then they deserve one!

To me, Candy lady is like the crush show, or like monster laugh show...a few random folks will have a highlight, no need to tantrum if you dont get picked. Jedi training is promoted as an audience participation show.

Gee, there was a post awhile back from someone who asked her and the reply was reportedly because a food safety inspector objected to the fact that she doesn't wear gloves.

Another poster pointed out that she can give them to a hospital because she is doing that on her own and not as part of her contract with Disney. If any liability were to accrue from the giveaway it would be on her and not on Disney.

I've always thought it was mostly about the complaints though. Have seen a couple of parents have a meltdown because their child wasn't picked. Have also seen some groups camp out at her station so they can be in the front of the crowd and catch her attention (she usually didn't pick them) and others who tried pushing and shoving.

They've also had to change the method of selection for Jedi training (no more random selection, kids have to line up to participate) and they don't choose specific kids to do the "wake up Tink" thing anymore because people were flattening each other pushing their way in, trying to get their kid chosen.

Yeah, they pick kids to talk to Crush, but they pick several kids per show and they don't get given anything for free, much less anything unique or special like a custom-made candy animal. Some of the other shows where they pick audience members to participate, the chosen few get only a sticker or a button - you don't see people fighting over those.

That is ludicrous!

There is no sign indicating that everyone will be picked, and I can't imagine a parent telling a kid if they go enough times they'd be picked.

This is what happens when everyone gets a trophy... no winners, no losers. Kids aren't taught that we can't all be winners all the time - then they have trouble adjusting later when they don't get into their first choice college or get the job they wanted.

It's so sad. :sad2:

This discussion reminds me of our first trip to WDW with our kids. We watched the Sword in the Stone play and one child from the audience gets chosen to pull up the sword. Of course, all the kids wanted to be chosen.

The younger brother of the boy who was chosen had a raging, screaming fit because he didn't get to participate. It was miserable for all of us and I couldn't believe those parents didn't drag that kid out of there by his ears.... but, I digress. Finally the castmember (who was obviously irritated) stepped up and allowed the screaming kid to pull the sword up, too.

That actually irriated me more because it set a very poor example for the other kids who witnessed this whole spectacle.

As we walked away, I took the opportunity to talk with my son about how wrong the little boy was and how his parents should have reacted - how we would react if he pulled a stunt like that.

Some people!

I wonder if that is why they don't do the sword show anymore.

Ok our family is just back from a quick Memorial Weekend trip and I am going to vent. We went to EPCOT and watched the candy art in Japan. We already knew that Miyuki was no longer giving out the candy that she made. This weekend when she was asked why she was no longer giving out the candy she said too many people complained because they did not get one. She did say that the candy is donated to the children's hospital which I think is awesome! My problem is that people "feel like they are entitled and everything is owed to them". It is these people that ruin it for everyone else. No longer can there be surprises or special happenings because if everyone can't have it no one can.:mad: Sorry just had to vent. We did have a great trip and enjoyed our family time together.

Absolutely. It's the case for a lot of things. Look at the Jedi Training Academy, they had to change it to some sort of fastpass?

Having heard about the wand thing over at the new Harry Potter thing at Universal, SOMEONE is going to cry about that, there will be some ANGRY people over the fact that a select few will get to do the ceremony in a day. For me, that's fine, but I know the winers will be heard.

No kidding. I saw that video. It looked very cool to have your wand choose you. But then you probably have to fork over $50 to purchase said wand and the magic ends there! :lmao:

Actually my understanding is that it's more like. "Well that's it, now you can go buy one in the shop next door". you don't get to keep OR buy the one in the show. ( kinda like the Sword in the Stone thing outside the Carousel in FantasyLand )

I just read Barb Nefer's article and it looked like her husband got to keep the wand. Hmmm...if only she were here to answer that!

Honestly, I think it makes more sense for the Jedi training thing to be something you get a "ticket" for. So many kids participate why not make it so that if you show up early enough, you get a ticket to the academy?
