OLA!

Has anyone vacationed in Cancun lately? My family and I are going at the end of June and staying at Dreams on the point of Cancun. My husband and I honeymooned there 15 years ago and had a little problem with -- you know, the runs. I was wondering if anyone has any advice on how to avoid this. I know the tap water is off limits but I was wondering about fresh fruits and vegetables too.

Also, we would like to do an excursion or two and wonder if there is anything that are "must dos"?

We stayed at the Gran Melia a couple of years ago. It was really nice, I loved it. We ate lots of salads, fruits, etc. and never had any trouble. We made sure to drink the bottled water though. We just relaxed at the resort, but several from the group we went down with went to Xel-Ha and Talum and really liked the trips.

We are going at the end of June too- just south of Cancun in Playa Del Carmen. We are staying at an AI so I'm not worried about the food. Our resort has their own filtration system. I still won't drink the water but not as worried about eating salad ets.

For excursions we are doing ATV tour and a Zip line. Can't wait!!

Have a great time. Hope we both have great weather!!

We were there in February and had a great time and came home "runs" free! We have been there several times, eaten at restaurants in town, drank at bars in town and never had any problems.

Most places give you bottled water if you want to drink water and we rarely eat very "healthy" while on vacation because we eat a ton of rabbit food here at home so no worries usually with that.

This last trip did include a case of some weird kind of food poisoning for my poor dh which lasted through the night and into the early morning but I'm pretty sure it was more the clams or the shrimp since I ate everything except those that he did.

We stayed at Secrets Capri which is in Riviera Maya and is a sister hotel to the Dreams and we did GREAT with the food and the water. Of course they only served bottled water so it was fine. I'm jealous! We had a fabulous time at Secrets Adults only.....go and enjoy and relax. As for things to do...we just usually hang at the beach and chill so not a lot of help for you there! The ferry to Cozumel is fun and the ruins are pretty cool in Tulum.

We went to Cancun twice in the last three years, the most recent being last October, about a week before the Hurricane. And I just booked a trip back this October! We've never had a problem with the water there. All the hotels and restaurants now have filtration systems for the water, so it shouldn't be an issue.

Its almost impossible to avoid the tap water anyway. All the fruit and vegetables are washed in it, the ice in all those delicious mixed drinks, coffee, etc...etc.

According to a Frommer's book I have, most of the resorts (definatly all the big ones) have filtration systems so you should be fine. Just avoid street vendor food or buffets where the food has been sitting out too long (becoming either too cool or too warm). The book also said that most problems wtih getting sick were cause not just by bad water alone, but by the stress of traveling and having new foods and being exposed to new "bugs" and germs. Add all those things together and you can spend a lot of time in the bathroom!

Hola.

It is very hard to avoid water in foreign countries, for reasons others have stated. Better hotels are a good source of protection, as is bottled water.

I have yet to develop an illness in a foreign country that was water-related, and have done my share of traveling! :)

Have a great trip!

We were there with a group of students the beginning of March. We packed a case of water in our luggage. The hotels where we stayed supplied water cooler type water. We avoided ice in our beverages. We also stayed with fruit that we could peel the whole shell or rind from, bananas, oranges, melons, and I don't believe anyone of us (32) had any problems. I got a bit brave on the last night and drank my beverage with ice. Again, no problems. They are trying to be so tourist friendly, it seems that everything is being filtered. We did brush our teeth with the bottled water and believe me, there was no danger of forgetting; the tap water smelled awful.

On another note, a good portion of Cancun is still being rebuilt. We were amazed. We were there during the spring break time and were concerned that the high school group would be tempted to frequent the club next to our hotel. It wasn't even open yet. Our hotel from the fifth floor up was still being repaired, new windows and furnishings. We did stay two nights in Playa del Carmen and that was gorgeous, but Cancun was really hit hard. Their department of tourism isn't advertising that, and some of the really high end resorts are up and running. Just be advised, you may see a lot of work still being completed.

We went to Secrets Capri last August and were totally spoiled! It was awesome. I am attempting to plan another trip for next spring, but I am having a hard time finding a resort that can match up to Capri. Narrowed it down to Secrets Excellence and El Dorada Seaside Suites.

Disney with an ecological theme. Best day in Mexico for us, bar NONE. And I am usually very frugal on trips. This was worth EVERY PENNY!

I will be there in march. There is a national cheer comp there. :cheer2:
