At my school you could by hair extensions (Pink for Breat Cancer, Light Blue for Childhood Cancer and Orange for Leukemia) I bought a Light Blue one and I'm getting it put in this upcoming Thursday

I chose Light Blue for three reasons:
1. Everyone focuses on Breast Cancer, Childhood Cancer is important too!
2. I like the color :]
3. (Like #1) Childhood Cancer needs some attention

I was wondering if anyone did things like this to support any kinds of Cancers? I thought this fit since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Post Away :]

i see pink signs around campus, but no one really does anything. and if i dyed my hair blue i think the last thought on anyone's mind would be "hmm, she must be supporting childhood cancer" simply because its not advertised here.

i def. agree that i think everyone is very aware of breast cancer though.

Major Pet Peeve: October is NOTNOTNOTNOT!!! Cancer Awareness Month. It is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This bothers me sooo much because the two types of cancers that have affected me directly and personally are Childhood and Brain, and everyone just ignores September and May. (Bet you didn't know September was CC awareness month and May was Brain Cancer Awareness Month?) We have a "Friday Nights for Hope" football game in September and all the proceeds go to Childhood Cancer, but this is only a recent development. Other than that, Childhood Cancer is rarely heard of.

Second, Childhood Cancer's colour is gold. Not pink, and not orange. GOLD! I can't tell you how many people ask me why I didn't get my tattoo pink instead of "eh, gold"! It's insulting sometimes, and no matter how many times you drill it in their head they don't get it.

As a survivor, it angers me to no end that Childhood Cancer gets zero to no awareness. Do not get me wrong, I hate ALL cancers. Each day 7 children die from Childhood Cancer. On October 9th, I knew 5 of those seven children. :sad2: Throughout the enxt 5 days, 4 more children passed away. I have never in my life heard of so many children dying, even as I followed others' battles during mine.

Okay,/rant. LOL! Thank you, OP for your contributions! In May, a bunch of us are getting grey streaks in our hair for Brain Cancer/Tumor Awareness Month in loving memory of my friend, J. In September, we'll be getting gold streaks. During September, I wear as much gold as I can to bring awareness, and many of my friends know to do it too or else. ;)

I totally understand that you feel that way. My school needs to get with the program then... they told us it was Cancer Awareness month.

Just to clear it up, I wasn't yelling at you. Sorry if anyone read it that way. :flower3: It's just a general frustration with society, that pisses me off beyond belief. But no, there's no general Cancer Awareness Month. The color for general cancers is purple (a lavender shade) but there's no month.

Oh, I didn't take it as you were yelling at me, lol.

We had a couple events. Paint the Park Pink (a family day event with walkathons, BBQ, games, etc). Dig Pink Day (everybody bought these hot pink breast cancer shirts for 10 bucks and wore them to class that day). Dig Pink Night (people wore said shirts last week to the game). All proceeds went to BC awareness/research.

Every Friday this month, they tell us to wear pink and blue. That's about it. Oh, they're having some like fundraiser thing where if you raise money, you have the opportunity to be principal for a day. It's sad that they have to entice you with principal for a day to get you to raise money for breast cancer.

october is also supposed to be a celebration of women who have survived an abusive relationship, and awareness for the women who haven't survived, and haven't left.

wear purple, because purple is the color bruises turn when they heal, and we all will heal.

^ Is that why some soldiers are honored with the purple heart?

i wasn't sure, so i went to google. they said that the purple stands for courage. but the purple for battered women represents bruises.

eta, i also found out that george washington, who created the purple heart, was using imported european royal silk to create the badges. which was, at the time, purple.

Last year they did the hair extension thing at my school and there was a huge turn out for that, the line took 5 hours to get to the front...
My teacher was a Breast Cancer Hero for Super Hero day that was kind of cute
Other than that nothings really happened around here...

Breast Cancer is by far the most recognized in my area.
Run for the Cure always draws much bigger crowds than the Relay for Life or any other sort of Cancer relay. And the smallest one recognized is the Terry Fox Run, we have one at school but we don't participate in the city's run, and you usually have no idea when it is.
It's strange how we choose to support just one strain of cancer when we could be putting it into a fund that works for the benefit of all cancers.

When I say that, I mean curing it, not making it worse.

there are 2 lighthouses near where i live and every october they turn pink. also, one of the hotels had pink lights outside instead of the usual blue lights.

im kinda in shock right now. i found out that this guy i used to know just died of a brain tumor 2 days ago. he went to my youth group about 3 years ago. the sad thing is that no one kept in contact with him after he left.
