Cancelling within 30 days - got some questions

We have ressies @ SSR Sept 29-Oct 3. Long story short, my DSis was diagnosed with breast cancer on 8/16. Since then, she has had 2 lumpectomy's and was just told on Friday that they were unsuccessful and will now have to have a mastectomy. I can't even begin to describe what the last month has been.

I can't, in good conscience, go away if she is scheduled for surgery during that time. I'm not worried about airfare (we are flying Southwest so I know they will credit to use within a year). We bought AP's and they are not activated yet, so no loss there. Rental car can be cancelled with no penalty.

What about our points? We are within 30 days of the vacation and I think if we cancel they go into some sort of "holding" account. Is that correct? Do we basically lose those points? I've never encountered this situation before with a holding account. It's fine if we lose them, because it's more important that we are here anyway.

Also, we have tix to MNSSHP for 9/29. Any chance they will refund or am I out of luck?

Thanks for any help!

:grouphug: My thoughts and prayers for your sister and your family.

When points go into holding, it means that you have only until the end of your use year to use them, and you cannot book a ressie until 60 days or less before hand. Now there also may be some sort of exchange you can deposit them into, but I don't know about that.

As far as the MNSSHP tickets. We have gotten a refund for them when my sister had to cancel a trip. I called the ticket center and was told what to do to get the refund.

Melanie - I'm sorry to read about your Sister and hope that her surgery will go well and that she will be cancer-free as a result.

We had to cancel a weekend trip in October, too, and we were in the under-30-day window. As the previous poster said, those points go into holding status and must be used before the end of your Use Year, and also you cannot make a reservation using those points unless you are under 60-days before you want to check-in.

An UPDATE - kind of..

My DSis is scheduled to have a mastectomy on 9/28. We are supposed to leave for WDW on 9/29. I called MS and they explained the whole "holding" account deal. They said I was pretty much out of luck on the MNSSHP tix though.

We still don't know what we're doing though. My DSis is demanding that we go and says she will be p***ed if we don't.

I don't even care if we lose the points, it doesn't matter in the big scheme of things.

Thanks for the help everyone!

I'm so sorry to hear about your sister. She sounds like a very strong person and I wish her the best.

Now, you know your sister better than any of us. Will she really be upset if you don't go, or does she really want you to stay home? If you could care less about the trip now, with all this other stuff going on, then what if you try to rent the reservation out? Maybe you can sell your MNSSHP tickets too? I'm just wondering that once your points go into holding, what kind of availability you will find at 60 days out for 2006...are your dates totally flexible? How long will it be before you think you will, in good conscience, want to leave your sister? If it may be more than a month, then you might be out of luck getting another ressie unless you rent a confirmed ressie from another member.

If you can, rent it out and then use the rental proceeds to rent a ressie or points from someone else when the time is right and you can go, all of you! Just an idea! Good luck with your decision.

As a surviver I hope I can help you. One thing I realized is that my husband was affected more so than me. And no matter where he was he would still be going through the anquish of the situation. I also know that what he went through was is some ways more tramatic because he could not make it go away and sometimes he felt helpless. He was there for me but who was there for him.. Maybe if you explain this to your sister she will understand why you need to be there. That is is not only for her but also for you. I hope this helps

in case you are wondering I am logged in under my husbands login.

my best wishes and prayers are extended to you, your sister, and family. everyone on this board is an extended friend.
