Cancelling a delta flight...help please

hi everyone!

I took a gamble and it didn't pay off so now I have a booked/paid flight (x6) from NYC to mco that I can't use. I have rang delta and to Change the day it is going to cost me $200 each, so x6 I will be charged $1200. I only paid $560 for the 6 tickets! I have looked on the delta site and I can book a new flight the day I need for another $560. It's cheaper to rebook than to pay the fee to change.

When I rung I was not able to get a straight answer from the rep ( international call with a small language barrier and bad line) but from what I can figure there will be NO charge to cancel...can anyone confirm that? Am I best just to cancel the original or is it best to be a 'no-show' even though we will be flying with them 2 days later

You can call to cancel and forfeit what you paid, but they cannot charge you an additional cancellation penalty.

If you want to rebook anew with the same airline you must cancel the original reservations first. Ask for a confirmation number / do a print screen. Then hang up/log out and call / sign on again to make the new reservaitons.

Otherwise their webcrawler, which comes to life every so many late nights like a Roomba vac, may delete the new reservation as a duplicate.

Yes, $90 each... Not a return ticket as hopping across different cities of the US... That's where I have come 'unstuck' in my planning....trying to arrange 8 different flights domestic and international! Doing my head in lol

If there's a day in between sets of flights, Delta will not cancel anything as a duplicate.

If you haven't already canceled the flights, don't. You may get lucky and have Delta make a schedule change. I believe the magic number is 3 hours. If your new flights arrive at least 3 hours later, you can get a free refund.

It's actually 90 minutes and is based on the original arrival or departure. Or if a stop is added, or if a flight is changed to a Delta Connection flight.

As you have probably already read, this is one of the reasons many of us love Southwest! Free flight changes. I just changed my flight down in March by a day, to tap into the after hours DVC party. I try and use SW as much as I can (but cannot always get their flights to work for me on my DL trips).

We have had to change tickets with Delta in the past and they are sticklers for that change fee. There is no cancellation fee, and you may receive a credit for the tickets you cancelled, but even if you use that credit in the future, you will still have to pay the change fee. I would just cancel and buy new tickets outright....forget the credit because you'd be paying more money in the change fees.

I just learned this today! We recently moved to Maryland and my parents flew via Southwest to visit us and told me that they don't charge to change your ticket. After years of flying Delta and incurring their change fee a few times, I'm starting to understand why people love Southwest so much.

When dh was traveling for work multiple times a week to the same city he often had the same reservation on multiple days - the 9am flight to city x returning on the 4pm flight the next day. No roomba we crawled ever cancelled his flights. So I don't believe this is accurate information.

That happened to me once with Jet Blue. I called to make a change, ready to pay a huge fee, only to be told the change was free because there had been some very minor schedule change on JB's side. Lucky me!

However, it could be problematic for the OP to wait until a schedule change occurs to rebook the tickets.

There may be no change fee, but if the price of your new flight is more than the old, you will be paying the difference in cost.

That has not been my experience. I have had multiple reservations for the same day on the same airline and nothing happened.

No the airline won't cancel you unless you have booked on the exact same flight twice. The airline doesn't care if you paid for a seat on every flight that day between point a and b.
