We are looking to rent a week of DVC through a member, what do we need to do to insure ourselves due to weather etc? Would the member be reimbursed or would we be out our $$ and no trip? Thanks!

You would need to purchase your own trip insurance. The member would probably lose the points if you cancel at the last minute for weather, and I can't see the member buying trip insurance on your behalf.

For what it's worth, WDW has only closed for a handful of days in its entire history. You might run into a string of lousy weather days at any time of the year, but you can still enjoy WDW as long as your willing to grin and bear it through the weather.

We've been to WDW a dozen times and never purchased trip insurance. The only time I might consider it if someone in the family were seriously ill and I wasn't sure if I'd be able to go for something like that.

Rental agreements and cancellation policy are completely up to you and the owner, whatever you negotiate. Disney will not become involved in the transaction at all, even if there is a dispute. It is just like renting a vacation home from someone.

Most members consider rentals non-refundable.

Many will ask for half up front and half 60 days out. If you cancal at any point they will keep the money you sent them.

Some will try and work with you. But even if a member wants to work with you (rescheduling or subletting), they may not be able to. Member points expire - so the further in the use year the member is, the less flexibility they have to help you.

The best advice I read here was to treat this like a non-refundable Expedia or Priceline reservation.

It sounds to me like you probably should be making a reservation through CRO or a travel agent if these kinds of things will be an issue for you. The person you rent from is neither of those, but just an individual who isn't using his timeshare ownership, and is renting it to you instead. The owner would lose all the points if the reservation is cancelled last minute, so there should be no refund to you.

Weather is no problem at Disney, when it rains just use a poncho and keep going. Don't let the weather stop you.
