Cancellations/Closings?

Locals excepting the youngers NEVER celebrate NYE in Times Square, pandemic or not. I did it once after working in the area and rarely admit it to others; a true day of the locusts moment
I know nothing about New York. Other than my one change of planes in JFK Airport in 1976, I have never stepped foot in the state. NYC just doesn't sound like my cup of tea.

You reminded me of something that made me smile.

Back in the early aughts, before kids, DH and I would go to Canada for Christmas / NYE. Quebec City, Montreal, Toronto... so magical. Always snow on the ground. All the lights at night. Falling on slippery sidewalks. Deux oeufs poache avec fromage and baked beans (what!?!) for breakfast every day....

Wine and cheese for dinner. Leather pants and fur jackets. Everybody smoking. Well, actually, that was Montreal. Anyway, tourists in the big city. It was a hoot.

Everything is still functioning normally here in northern Indiana, but my DD18 is hearing a buzz that they may have elearning when it’s time to return back to school after Christmas break.

Our county's average daily count is 20. That's really low for us.

Life is business as usual here, with some wearing masks in public, but not all.

We had a huge surge in August/September with exhausted healthcare workers pleading for people to take it seriously.

My daughter has heard chatter too about her college going remote for next semester. I really hope not, she has made good friends and was thriving on campus after a not so great end to high school.

DH and I are vaxxed and boosted, DS12 and DD9 are fully vaxxed too. Our county has a mask mandate, so things never really got looser for us except for a couple of weeks in the summer.

My experience in DC on Sunday was a lot like every other experience there since late Spring. Regardless of the mask mandate being lifted for the last few weeks, most people were still wearing them indoors (and yes, now it's reinstated again). The show was masks required and proof of vax or recent test. Nearly full show. We had a nice dinner at Cuba Libre and things were hopping but not crazy stuffed either. We walked down to the National Christmas tree after dinner. Very busy there, but that's not unusual either.

Early December/late November, we'd been going down to the Smithsonian museums and doing all of that stuff. All I can say is the museums weren't dead, but they weren't packed either. And oh man I hate security lines, the security lines were bad. But then I'm going to tell you to go visit my favorite little hole in the wall - Mozart Cafe. They need your business. Great German/Austrian good, nice staff, weird little grocery store in the front. The chicken schnitzel is divine. Or just be a tourist and go to Fogo de Chao or Jaleo....

I can't predict what's going to happen over the next week in the DC area, but I'm a boss with 100+ employees, the company we work for has a vax mandate with 98% compliance. More than 10 of my staff have tested positive or gone into quarantine since Friday. I've had to shut down the offices and send everyone home to telework.
Good to know about the museums. I know they still had a mandate even when the city dropped theirs a few weeks ago. We tend to go to places at opening. We were there in summer but the museums were closed, so we were going to do Natural History, see the National tree, Air and Space (the VA location), and get a timed entry to National Archives. I know a lot of places have winterized patios, we ate at Jaleo last time and ate outside at the District Wharf which may not be possible depending on the weather.

the Smithsonian museums are subject to the federal mandate. I work in a federal building and when there, we wear masks all day long, every day.

There is no current order from the DC government to close restaurants, some of them are just choosing to close or go to takeout only. if that happens, a winterized patio won't help.

In the past month I watched the winds change but people are not bending in the burbs of either Ma or Pa, so January should be a treat :(. Public places seem to be an experiment where-ever I find myself, with the exception of a recent ceremony in a large stadium. Wondering how long this will go on, feel like I'm watching a game of chicken with a microbe.

On my way to Dyer, Indiana on Thursday to visit my mother and brother. Back to The Region for us!

I am in British Columbia Canada and they just announced over the weekend the the touring production of Anastasia to Vancouver is prosponed. 😞 I was so close as I had tickets for next month. All venues with more than 1000 are now to operate at 50% So most entertainment and sports events are being cancelled or posponed. All New Years Eve events all cancelled.

More restriction are been announced this afternoon 😩. So we are expecting more closures.

Just announced for BC:

New provincial health orders will come into effect Wednesday at midnight to try to slow the rapid spread of the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus and prevent B.C.’s health-care system being overwhelmed.

Bars, nightclubs, gyms, fitness centres and dance studios will be closed until Jan. 18. All organized indoor gatherings, such as weddings and Christmas parties, must be cancelled. Sports tournaments will also be cancelled.

Restaurants, pubs and cafes are still able to operate with a maximum of six people per table and space between the tables.

Concert, theatre, movie and sports venues will be limited to 50 per cent capacity, regardless of size, with masking and vaccination-checking.

Personal gatherings are limited to your household plus one other household or 10 guests, all vaccinated.

Non-urgent surgeries will be cancelled.

We had tickets to see Spider-Man No Way Home for tomorrow afternoon. We just cancelled.

We have tickets for Friday and on the theatre website it says:

For ticketholders who cannot see their showtimes on Cineplex.com, We have removed our showtimes from Cineplex.com as we wait to review and understand the new government mandates being announced. Thanks for your patience and we’ll see you at the movies!

Of course, our showtime is not listed.

I'm not sure I've noticed cancellations but NFL is getting hit hard so I'm wondering the status of the games for this week..I'm particularly watching for Sunday's game as I see our team has had to add more players to the reserve list today. I know they rescheduled 3 games last week I think. The game is here on Sunday so a reschedule would then cancel that one. I don't have tickets for that game but I know a few who do.

You’re here is Vegas aren’t you? We saw it at the Regal in Summerlin on opening day and the place was empty. I was quite surprised, thought for sure it would be packed.

They canceled Thursday’s VGK game but are still playing tonight’s game. I haven’t heard of anything else yet.

Watching the news conference now. Thankfully DH had his hernia surgery on Friday so he got in just in time.

😉 Oldest saw it on opening day and it was dead according to them & friends. Saturday & Sunday it was swamped. So we pushed it off to tomorrow thinking it's Wednesday, it shouldn't be so bad. When we purchased the tickets on Sunday it was empty. Checked this morning and now it's full. So we cancelled. We're all vaxxed, yet we still don't want to be on top of others during virus open season. Youngest had a nasty cold at the beginning of the month that kept them out of school for 3 days. We just don't want to chance it.

We also live in South Florida. DS takes lessons & volunteers at a comedy club here. About a week ago one of the managers tested positive, which I didn't know about. (I also didn't know the GM & a couple other employees refuse to wear a mask, until now.) They have now had three more people test positive. The club has been shut down, but not before ruining Christmas plans for many of us. Yes, I'm very unhappy with my DS at the moment.

as a non parent I have to ask why the only reason that makes sense is that he did not tell you right away

My mom wants us to take her to church on Christmas Eve. I looked on the website to see if they were limiting capacity. The place holds 1400 people and it's usually standing room at the 5:00 p.m. Christmas Eve mass. We usually get there before 4:30 just to get a seat. The website mentioned that masks are required and that families "should" maintain 6' of distance from others. It didn't say anything about limited capacity, or proof of vaccines or negative tests. I'm assuming that, as usual, everyone who shows up will be allowed to squeeze in. I told my mom I'm not completely comfortable with being that close to people for well over an hour, especially for her since she's 85 (despite the fact that we're all boosted). We're still discussing it and deciding what to do. They will be streaming the services online, so that might be a good compromise.

It sounds like just them trying to say "well we told you what the CDC said which is staying 6 feet apart from others is advisable" knowing that unless a significant amount of people opt not to go that won't be physically possible. I don't think I would feel very comfortable even masked up more just because of singing and talking and inability to get away realistically from people at least knowing if you can get away from people in advance like you would if there was a capacity limit. When I'm in crowds these days I can move away from people or quickly pass people (other than an airplane I should say). I understand them not wanting to cancel the service entirely though.

If I had known after the first person tested positive, I could have tried to convince him to avoid the club, until after the holidays. That way he would have had time to quarantine & test without messing up our entire Christmas holiday. If he insisted on returning, we would have avoided him, so we could have kept our plans as they were.
