Cancellation Question

I have a question I realize that when booking the package deal you have to cancel at least 45 days in advance. However, what happens if say a week before your trip you have to end up changing the dates to another time? Are you penalized for this? Thanks

We had to cancel a trip last spring just a week before our departure date. We received a full refund.
