i know there is a 30 days out for cancelling a reservation and not losing points, but is there any exceptions for an emergency situation?
When discussing anything regarding reservations, cancellation, banking, borrowing, etc. be
VERY careful about your days, dates, and terminology.
The cancellation deadline with no penalty is
NOT 30 days prior to arrival.
It is 31 or more days prior to arrival. If you cancel at 30 days prior to 1 day prior, your points go into holding account. If you cancel on the day of your scheduled arrival, you lose all the points for that reservation.
Depending on the specifics of the situation, that one day could make all the difference in the world. At 31 days, you might be able to use or bank the points; in holding account you might not be able to get any availability and might lose the points completely.
Regarding emergencies, the general rule is NO -- there are no provisions for emergencies. Doc and Disneynutz are talking about
exceptions, not what usually happens.
DVC evaluates emergency cancellations on a case-by-case basis, and they
do make exceptions...but the default answer is "No, that's why we offer
trip insurance."
Good luck, and we all hope whatever happened works out.
