i know there is a 30 days out for cancelling a reservation and not losing points, but is there any exceptions for an emergency situation?

It doesn't hurt to try. Call Member Services and explain your situation. If the Adviser says no, ask to speak to a Supervisor. Good luck.

MS has certainly granted exceptions to the Holding Account policy, but if you feel you may need to cancel, it might be wise to add the insurance.

In the past exceptions have been given during hurricanes and other extreme weather situations, but other exceptions have been on a case-by-case basis. If there is any doubt, it might be best to just purchase the insurance.

Good luck!

You only lose the points if you cancel on your check-in day. If you cancel at 1 day to 30 days from check in, your points go into the holding account. You would have the rest of your Use Year to use those points but they can only be used to make a reservation within 60 days of check in.

When discussing anything regarding reservations, cancellation, banking, borrowing, etc. be VERY careful about your days, dates, and terminology.

The cancellation deadline with no penalty is NOT 30 days prior to arrival. It is 31 or more days prior to arrival. If you cancel at 30 days prior to 1 day prior, your points go into holding account. If you cancel on the day of your scheduled arrival, you lose all the points for that reservation.

Depending on the specifics of the situation, that one day could make all the difference in the world. At 31 days, you might be able to use or bank the points; in holding account you might not be able to get any availability and might lose the points completely.

Regarding emergencies, the general rule is NO -- there are no provisions for emergencies. Doc and Disneynutz are talking about exceptions, not what usually happens.

DVC evaluates emergency cancellations on a case-by-case basis, and they do make exceptions...but the default answer is "No, that's why we offer trip insurance."

Good luck, and we all hope whatever happened works out.
