Canadians Traveling to the USA in 2025

It’s that time of year when I am watching my WDW vacation countdown closely. Just 10 more days until our ADR window opens a crack! The other things I have followed closely for years now are the release dates of the latest flu, pneumonia, and COVID vaccines. Plus, I check my own records for any of my other immunizations that might be coming due for a booster. I find having a trip booked really helps my incentive. But even if I wasn’t travelling, I fall into a “vulnerable group” now and want whatever protection I can get.

Most of all, I am grateful that my wonderful daughter shares my craving for a little of the Disney holiday magic and we are physically and financially able to indulge ourselves again this year. We never take that for granted.

Just over five months ago, That Man appointed Pete Hoekstra to be the US ambassador to Canada. Initially, it appeared that Hoekstra was attempting to mend fences, but it turns out that Hoekstra did drink a double, or possibly triple, dose of the kool-aid.

A few days ago, Hoekstra said that he is offended that Canadians are responding to That Man's messages of love and peaceful co-existance towards Canada with violent rhetoric ("elbows up"). Then, yesterday in Banff, he made the veiled threat that because fewer Canadians are flying to the US, maybe the US should take away customs pre-clearance at Canadian airports:

"Matter of fact, the numbers are down. We're not sure we can make the numbers work anymore … pre-clearance is something that is done at the expense of the U.S. government. We paid for it. You know, you can't make the numbers work anymore — you're all business people. You know what that means. You've got to take a look at some of these things."

The exchange he had with the Canadian moderator at the Banff forum is worth a read:

U.S. ambassador says Washington has to 'take a look' at airport pre-clearance, citing drop in Canadian tourism

ASIDE: Hoekstra was born in Holland before immigrating to the US, and many Dutch Canadans and citizens of Holland are offended that he is apparenty unaware that Canada was largely responsible for liberating Holland during WW2. I am personally offended, since my Dad fought through Holland as a member of The 13th Canadian Field Regiment (I once joked with an elderly lady in my congregation, who lived through WW2 in Holland, that she "owes me" because of my Dad's actions, and since then she has periodically given me a batch of excellent home made cookies). As a final aside, Canadian actor James Doohan ("Scotty" on Star Trek) was also a member of The 13th, and was wounded on D-day, In addition to other injuries he lost the middle finger on his right hand. Doohan tried to hide his injury during filming, but on occasion his missing finger was obvious. The injury made it easy for Doohan to give the famous "Vulcan salute":

Doesn’t change anything for me. :confused3 We have lived without it before.

Gosh, that would be huge if they take away Pre Clearance. We have it in Ireland too, and the Irish Government use it for all sorts of marketing and promotion. Its a big part of Irish tourisms promo for Americans visiting Ireland. The economic repercussions would be huge if they stopped it.

Please do,,,that would make all look at even less travel. One more hassle to add. Hmm talk about promotion and welcoming.
In addition, all those US agents out of work.
Exactly, all those agents who have settled in Canada and Ireland, very likely bought property, kids in school. Huge knock on effect.

As someone who once very narrowly avoided missing a flight to Orlando in large part due to a ridiculous backup at US preclearance in Montreal, I'm not even sure that doing away with it is a net negative. Sure, the time spent waiting to clear customs is shifted to arrival instead of departure, but at least you don't risk missing a flight over it.

On the whole, I think I just don't really care either way. Sometimes it's nice to arrive as a domestic passenger, but I fly to other countries and clear customs on arrival. It's not a big deal.

If Hoekstra thinks the threat is going to make people suddenly decide to resume travel to the US, I think he is seriously misreading the room. Not a great quality in an ambassador, of all things.

Exactly this. I'm sure I'd survive. Plus adding additional threats doesn't exactly give me the warm fuzzies about visiting the US.

I did go to Disney just a few weeks ago and was suppose to be planning a trip next year for my son but maybe we can discuss other things he may want to do instead.
