Canadian Buffoon's Hi Low Vacation - South Central Musings

OH, the horror! I will never look at a hippo again the same way!! Ha!

I know! The way he attacked!
Just awful!!!

Great update from such an amazing trip report writer! ;)

Awww... shucks.

Cool mall. Was it creepy when no one was there? It must have been eerily quiet compared to when it's open?

Creepy??

More like... peaceful.

Not one person bumped into me.

My Dad used to have what my Mom calls 'Mall Face' whenever he was bored from shopping!! It's a thing!

I know that face!

Talk about some beautiful scenery all around! Must have been nice for a mini road trip!

It really was, except....

Whoops! Getting ahead of myself.

Anything after 5pm is officially 'early evening' in my book.

Got it.
Seems to be the consensus so far.

THE HOUSE IS SO CUTE! I totally want to stay there!

We really liked it! :)

Crazy elk animal encounter you had there. You can't pay for experiences like that!!

Nor would you want to!

"So, do you want the devoured by a tiger,
or the mauling by an elk death?"
"I'll take one mauling please."
"That'll be $32.50..."

And my guesses:
1. 8am.
2. Most definitely. At least one more.
3. Yes. In a theater.
4. Yes, out of town.
5. 3 times.
6. You have some elk for dinner!
7. Naw. I read it, didn't I?

Noted.

My answers to the latest questions

1. 07:30 wake up time.
2. Yes to a gift shop could have got a mug to drink out of.
3. Watch the movie on your TV in your holiday cabin.
4.see more elk in the town
5.Get asked for directions twice
6 As you come back from your drive the elk was in the road so you blew your horn gave him a fright.
7.Your chapters are not too long.

Noted.

Could stay in the log cabin would like to use the wood burner as well.

I have bad news!
The fireplace was electric!
Or was it gas... hmmm....

Either way, I wasn't a wood burner.

And yes... that was disappointing.

So amazing for all the work you put into your TRs!

Aww... thanks! :)

And, maybe you can find some batteries at the mall!

You know... that didn't even occur to me.

Because they generally need to be charged
before first use.

And they're $50 each.

And...

Except for that little detail.

... that too.

Strangely enough, no.

Really?
What kinda Podunk place do you live in?!?!?!

:rolleyes1

So, that's where it went!

Maritime disaster of the day.

You had a grasp on reality in the first place?

ooooohhhhh......

Dang, that's good.

Bonus points! pixiedust:

Poor Ruby! Not too surprising that she doesn't like them after that!

Yup. First and last time in a wave pool.

Gorgeous.

Isn't it?!?!

Time to leave work. For those of us with 9-5 jobs. I guess I'd call it early evening, but just barely.

Everyone's picking evening, it seems.

That cabin is quite adorable. I would definitely stay there.

I know, right??

That was quite the interesting animal encounter!

"Interesting"...
You have an interesting interpretation
on the word 'interesting'.

I had been wondering what he was up to. Now I know.

::yes::

1. 7:30
2. Yes. You started a trend that you can't escape.
3. On tv
4. Outside of town
5. Yes - twice
6. Elk burger for lunch
7. Just about right

Noted.

I read it first on my phone, so I was definitely not expecting to see anything, but I did notice a few places where I thought you might have written something! There were lots of potential signage opportunities in the mall series! I was meaning to go back and look, and then I saw your comment!

I knew I shouldn't have said anything!

The first one was to Cookies by George.
These suckers are easily
the best cookies in the world.

The Edmonton airport sent us coupons in the mail, and one of them was for the Cookies by George in the main terminal - buy 6 cookies, get 6 free. You better believe I was all over that! Mmm, those gluten-free chocolate macaroons :cloud9:

We continued on to our destination:
The Fantasyland Hotel at
West Edmonton Mall;
the largest mall in North America.
Originally built in 1981, it held the title
of World's Largest Mall until 2004.

This trip report just got weird for me. I'll be sure to do a trip report next time I go to Winnipeg, just for you haha.

But... it's still just a mall.
Yes there are some interesting things
in it here and there...
But it's a mall.

So, when I was a kid I was obsessed with the idea of the WEM. I lived on the other side of the country, out in the Maritimes, but whenever my parents would ask me about family trips, I never once asked for Disney - nope, I was the weird kid who asked to go to Edmonton to visit the mall :sad2:. I remember the first time I went there (when I was 20) I was practically jumping up and down with excitement. Then, when I moved to Edmonton when I was 22 I took a job at the mall just so I could be there all the time...these days I'm lucky if I go there twice a year. I'm so over it haha.

Really, am I not wonderful?
Tell me I am and.... nothing.
Too easy of a cop out for bonus points.

But tell me I'm amazing and you'll get some.

You're amazing, but only because you're from the same city as my fiance :)

I walked past the food court
and took a quick, crappy photo.

That food court looks so nice now! It was completely re-done not too long ago, so for awhile you would sit down to eat there, look up and see wires and stuff hanging out of the ceiling...

DSC04284_zpstawe01dy.jpg

The large body of water in the water park
is a wave pool.

Ugh. This is where I worked for 6 months. Word of advice - don't work at a waterpark.

After our snack,
we stopped in the town of Edson

Of course, everyone stops in Edson on the way to Jasper. They have a Wendy's!

After getting some gas in Hinton,
(where a line-up of cars soon formed.)
we continued on our way.

I hope you watched your speed going through Hinton, they love their photo radar in that town...not that I'm speaking from experience or anything... :rolleyes2

We arrived in Jasper at ten after five in the afternoon.
Or is that early evening by then?
Bonus points for giving me your opinion.

I'm an old person, if I had it my way I'd eat supper at 5pm and be in bed by 9pm every night. So 5:10 = early evening.

Moments later, we arrived at our destination,
Bear Hill Lodge

I've never heard of this place. I guess most of my recent trips to Jasper have been just driving through though, it's been awhile since we've stayed there. I just looked it up on a map - great location!

Let me know where you stand
and I'll toss you a few bonus points.

I like the green chairs! And the wood burning fireplace. And the walls. Ugh, fine - I'm originally a small town girl and this kind of looks like places some of my family members actually live (except obviously they have actual bedrooms).

Ruby made a point of going into...
Every. Single. Gift shop.

Oh God. There's so many!

And Jasper has a lot of gift shops.

No kidding!

Eventually we stumbled on a tiny place
called Famoso.

I rave about this place to anyone who will listen! There's all kinds of them here in Edmonton, and they are by far my favourite pizza. The BBQ chicken pizza is amazing. And oh my God - the prosciutto wrapped mozza balls - go on a Wednesday night and they are only $2 each. Oh, and the banana-nutella dessert pizza...Damn it! Now I want Famoso!

Ruby had a Margherita while I settled on
ham, mushroom and sun-dried tomatoes.
(And Ruby had her usual, a red wine Sangria
while I decided to just have a Limoncello.
Sue me for not drinking an alcoholic beverage.
I didn’t feel like it.)

Their Rossini's are pretty fantastic as well. And they used to have this cocktail with cucumbers in it - I've ordered pitchers of that before....

The whole thing with the elk is hilarious. I'm surprised you didn't mention stopping shortly after you entered the National Park to see the mountain goats. They love to climb those rocks just past the Pocahontas Cabins, and there's always a bunch of vehicles pulled over on the side of the road to take pictures of them.

1. Sure. Why not. It's a trend.
What time do we get up?

You guys sleep in! Jasper is a quiet little town, and you managed to sleep until 8:30am.

2. Do we go in a gift shop?

Ha! Of course you do, they are unavoidable in Jasper.

3. We watch a movie.
In a theater? On the TV? On the iPad?

I've never actually been to the movie theater in Jasper, but I know they have one. I'm going to say you went there.

4. Elk. We see more.
In town or out?

Those things are everywhere. I'll say both in town and out.

5. Haven't asked this for a while.
Do I get asked for directions?
Of course I do.
How many times?
I'll narrow it down.
Less than five times.

Three. At least one of those people were driving one of those rental RV's that you see everywhere.

6. How do I get revenge
on that elk?

You barmp your car horn.

7. Are these chapters too long?

Nah, they're fine.

Did you see it?
I hope not!
Because I didn't do one this round.

But... for bonus points.
How hard did you try to find
something anyway???

And, just for looking...
Bonus photo for ya:

Keep on rollin' everyone.

This GIF makes me laugh every time. That poor guy!

I am SO far behind! And I was dragging my you know what and didn't get my guesses in. Bad Bad girl. I know I was in the top 10 with points but I think Liesa might run away with this one.
I didn't mean to bail on here for awhile but daughter was home on Spring Break. The house has a different feel to it when we get to see and chat with her. Also hubby and I on the 16th (Thurs) did our over night stay in the Dells at the casino for my b-day weekend. Then on our way home Friday we stopped at a theater with reclining seat and saw Beauty and The Beast. We liked it!

We have people on vacation at work so I've been going in early all this week:faint:. So I wanted to make sure I get on here to tell you HI:wave2: and wish you a wonderful celebration with Kay. She's one lucky girl.... Dad who takes her on trips and she had the best month to have a b-day. Can't wait to here about your adventures and you DISmeet. I have to be honest and say I'm a little jealous that I can't magically join you, Allison and Liesa :( I regret not being able to stop by the Ditch and hang out with them. But I was glad that I can say that the famous Steppesister was the first person from here I got to MIRL:-)

Sending you lots of pixiedust: and have a great time :cool1:

Mini pre-trip real life update

Kay and I leave on Saturday,
so not sure how much I’ll be around before then.

I’ve been getting a few comments from some of you
( @franandaj ) to pack more than one pair of shorts.
Just because when we went to Hawaii last year,
I dumped red syrup on them
and looked like I’d been
in an unfortunately low-blowed
knife fight…

And just because I wore those same shorts
(which I (and when I say “I”, I mean Ruby)
was able to salvage in the wash)
to Disney and they got permanently dyed red
(and then pink in the ensuing wash)
in no way implies that this sort of thing happens
on a regular basis
and is in any way a reason for concern.

Besides, I like traveling as light as possible.
So one pair of jeans and one pair of shorts is sufficient.

Now, I need a pair of shorts to replace the ones
that were permanently pinked.
So I bought a pair. Heck, might as well get a new
pair of jeans while I’m at it.
It’s all new! All day! Woot!

Fast forward to today.
I was feeling a tad peckish.
Looking for a little sumpin’ to nosh on.
Let’s see what’s in the fridge….

Ah! Perfect.
Just boil up some noodles…..
Microwave the Bolognese sauce….

You already see where this is going, don’t you.

Yeah... you do...

<ding!> The microwave cheerily prophesies my doom.
I take the sauce out of the microwave and…
It slips out of my hands and lands on the floor.

It pretty much exploded.
Tomato sauce and ground beef
as far as the eye can see!

Oddly enough, the dogs didn’t seem overly upset.
Luckily, the entire kitchen wasn’t splattered...

There was a space… oh, roughly equivalent
to an average size man’s pair of jeans,
that didn’t seem to get hit.

I stripped down right there.
On the one hand, I’m glad the kids
weren’t home so I could.
On the other… I could’ve got them
to clean up the mess.

Hmmmmmm……

I tossed the jeans in the wash.
They’ll be fine.

But I did make a stop on the way to work…

I will now be bringing two pairs of jeans…
And two pairs of shorts.

I can take a hint.

I haven't answered the contest yet but I wanted to wish you a great vacation. I was just there last month and had a great time. Don't forgot about the Dole Whips.
Enjoy Judy :beach::woohoo::smickey:

Bwahahaha!!!

In case you couldn't tell, that was about packing two pairs of jeans and shorts this time.

We've been having weird weather. I'm sure you'd think it's shorts weather but we think it's long pants and long shirts weather. Several weeks ago it was nice 70s and 80s. Now we're back to 60s, which for you is still shorts weather.

Oooooooooooooooooooooh crap.

Well now that I look at the 10 day forecast they say it's going to be back in the 70s next week.
Good thing, or I'd see a new suitcase and wardrobe in my immediate future. Early packing- one of the downsides of this unfortunate detour on my way to Cali.

Good call! You know what this means though. Now, because you packed two each, no doubt you'll be incident-free.

Hope the two of you have a WONDERFUL time!!!!!! Safe travels and cannot wait to hear all about it. :goodvibes

I lost all my quotes. I'm so sorry, but I don't have time to go over them again (my 2 year old just dumped M&M's all over the floor) so I will have to remember from what I just read.
The baby hippo is darling.
You are AMAZING!
I loved your pictures of the mall. I thought the food court shot was great. I love that there is a waterpark and amusement park in the mall. What a fun place! Although, you thinking Ruby drowning was comical was awful!
The picture of the mountains is beautiful. I love that there was an elk walking with you. I'm sure it was terrifying though. I bet it was huge. Your bridge shot is my favorite shot so far. Absolute perfection! Oh, and I consider 5 p.m. early evening. I did cringe at the sight of your room. Although, I'm sure it was perfect for two. I'm not much of an outdoorsy person though, so a cabin is much better than a tent, oh the horror! I'm perfectly happy with modern conveniences.
1. 8 a.m.
2. of course
3. theater
4. out
5. 4
6. dinner
7. No way
8. I looked
Missed you!

Hi Pkondz
Just like to take this opertunity to wish yourself and Kay a good trip to Disneyland California. Are you sure only two pairs of shorts and jeans will be enough I normally take teeshirt's as well.Enjoy your meet up with Steppsister and Franandaj.

Hi Pkdonz - maybe you and Kay should plan a trip to Toronto this summer as our 2 Capybaras had 3 babies this week and they are so cute. They are going to have a name the babies contest. Parents are called Bonnie & Clyde as they escaped the Zoo last year and went on a couple of days road trip. Judy
