Canadian Buffoon's DISmeet vacation - 09/14 - Bowled Over

This was a really interesting read. Since you just posted an update about space I thought you might like this article I read earlier tonight. Now I am going back to catch up on your updates.

What it’s like to fly a billion-dollar satellite on the US Air Force’s largest plane
https://qz.com/1346279/big-plane/

Thanks for that.
Interesting read!
(And yes, I did read it. :))

ETA: I have actually been on a C5 Galaxy. They have made an appearance at the Air Show here at Offut AFB. (This is the base where President Bush flew to on 9/11.)

I've been on one too.
I took one of my DDs
when she was really little
to an airshow here in town.

All caught up now and enjoyed the walk through the Japanese gardens.

Thanks!
I kinda liked it too. :)

I have been to the Japanese Gardens in Montreal at the Botanical Gardens

Me too!

Hey! Stop copying me!

Oh... go ahead.

;)

and we have a small one here at our local botanical garden (they are not doe with it yet so it is still small).

Have you seen it?
How does it look?
When do they expect
it to be finished?

I am glad that there was no fur or blood to be found after your accident and that your car was ok.

Me too!
I think I would've felt
a little sick to my stomach
if I'd killed somone's
poor pet.

While I AM caught up reading, I haven't had much time to comment lately. Long work hours and a visit from my grandbaby and DIL have taken up (for good reason) a lot of my time.

A visit from the grandkid!
Nice!
How was that?

Don't be mistaken, I am still enjoying yours, and everyone else's TRs, a lot, but I'm having a hard time keeping my head above water here.

I know that life can
get in the way.

Hope things slow down
a bit for you soon. :)
(I do see that you've got
about a month and a half
before your next trip.)

However, having said that, I did put up my PTR/TR tonight and hope you'll join in. :) Now that Baby and DIL are off to Guam, I should have a little bit more time to play.

I found it and am
already subscribed.
But fair warning,
I tend to not comment much
on PTRs.

Hope you are well!

Well...
To be honest, I'm pretty tired.
But I hope to rest up tomorrow
or the next day or two.

He is looking at one of the tours through Beyond Band of Brothers

http://www.beyondbandofbrothers.com/tours2019

Most likely one of the 11 day tours that takes you through France, Belgium and Germany.

Wow! I never knew tours
like that even existed!
That's... pretty cool!

Yeah. My dad served as the escort for one of the families of a lost sailor at the annual memorial for the Thresher.

He must have had
very mixed feelings about that.

I am so very, very sorry for the loss of your friend. I'm sure your group will be supporting each other through this sad time.

:grouphug:

Thanks, Dee.
It's a great bunch of guys.
Everyone seems to be
leaning on everyone else.

Loved your pictures from the Japanese garden. Finally, a peaceful visit. It happens every now and zen.

Thanks.

What a wonderful meet you had with Annie and Joe.

::yes::
It was really great!
So are they!

The burger place really does look fantastic and fun. Ice cream is a great way to follow-up on that meal. Glad you got to spend so much time with your friends.

I ate very well that day. :)

That is such a scary encounter with the (thankfully) empty dog crate. So glad to hear you, and your car, did not incur any damage.

I got lucky that time
(no pet/no pain/no damage.)

Not the worst thing to happen that day?

Nope.
Worst drive of my life.

Saw it! First time around, too!

;)

My goodness, I'd gotten behind. Gosh darn this summer semester of mine... thankfully it's over on Saturday! :thumbsup2And I have exactly four days before my fall semester starts :faint::laughing:

Whoa.
Not exactly a ton of down time for you! :faint:

I think you'll do just fine at my museum with your previous training ;)

That's why I went.
Prepping for my real goal.

Ooooh, finally one I got on the first try :rotfl:

Not exactly hidden, is he?

NO! But holy moly was that boat amazing - I honestly can't even fathom being on board for months at a time - or heck, minutes at a time!

Just a tad claustrophobic?

Yes!!! I love that show!

::yes::
I've eaten at about
half a dozen of his spots.
Some were great...
Some were... not.

 What a cool experience! We have an A&W about an hour or so from me and I love having the opportunity for some time travel, 1950s style :thumbsup2

:goodvibes
That's where I got my start!
My parents would take
us to the drive-in A&W.

soooooo good.

Yep. You'll see.

Is it me or is this path in the shape of a heart (if you use a little imagination and :wizard:)? Yeah, I thought so

Oh, absolutely.
Totally planned it that way.

:rolleyes1

I am honored and overjoyed that you'll be making a stop in Corning. I've waited for this day for a LONG time and it's nearly here!!! :goodvibes:goodvibes:goodvibes

No way I wasn't going to!
Not too long now!

First, I want to extend all my sympathies to you and the rest of the DisDads on the loss of your friend. You're all in my thoughts and prayers.

Thanks, Annie.
It came as quite a shock.

This is where our engagement shoot was!

Oh! I didn't think they'd allow it.

Next time you're in the area, if there's time, you should check out the Sarah P. Duke gardens. They also have a nice little Japanese garden, complete with a little hut you can explore. With your shoes off, of course.

I'd like that.
Not sure if I'll have time.
Everything's pretty much
up in the air right now. :)

It's a possibility, though.

Heh, understatement of the year.

:rolleyes1

I meannnn......in my defense I did try to originally work out meeting you halfway. But when I couldn't, I had to sweeten the pot. Quite literally.

Yep. You bailed on me,
so you had to resort to bribery.

Ok, so here's the thing. I am obsessively early places. I go into almost a panic if I'm running late. So imagine that coupled with "I have no idea how to get in touch with him because normally I would text and I don't even know his number plus can you even text from a US phone to a Canadian phone????" You can ask Joe, I was fairly worked up. Glad that the e-mailing worked.

Well, if/when we meet again,
I'll ask him.
And if his story doesn't match....

evil_zps5ddxwufu.gif

Lunchtime traffic is legendary in my town. You scoff, but it's intense.

Um...

You do know that I
drove through it
to get there, right?

:lmao:

You mean we haven't? :confused3

Eep! Good point!
But we had never met in person
or actually... you know... spoken.

Bad Daddy's is amaaaaaaaaaazing. We love them. It's on my list of places to take @Captain_Oblivious if he ever makes it to the area.

I am pretty sure he'd
give it a drooling Homer.

Said no southerner ever.

Said every Canadian ever.

Only a little bit.

Fun fact though. It no longer exists in that form. Ray Price died, his family sold the shop, and when the new owners asked if they could keep the name. His wife didn't want them to, so now it's Tobacco Road Harley Davidson.

I saw that!
I couldn't remember
my drive times,
so quickly re-mapped
my stops.

I thought I had the wrong shop.
Didn't know the reason for
the new name, though.

There may have been some discussion of that in the car.

:scared1:

No no no, not actually DOING that.
But that you might have been thinking that.

:faint:

ok...

We try to sample at least one new flavor every time. Unless they're packed (which is more often than not)

So... how many have you tried?

Nah, they're all too nice there. They'd just move to the next person and ask if they can help.

Boring!
I want them to shove
Cold Sweat down someone's throat!

Just... not mine.

I can definitely confirm.

:rolleyes2

Je ne regrette rien.

Awww  It meant so much to us that you took the time to come see us. Even Joe has said we need to come visit you.

So worth the drive. :)

Uhhh......
Oh! And I can get more Coffee Crisp!

I've learned my lesson.
Southern heat is not to be
messed with.
Next time I bring a cooler.
(So your favourite was
the Coffee Crisp, eh?
(Yes I knew that.))

OH MY GOODNESS
I probably would have screamed.

We had a similar experience on the way down to Disney for our honeymoon. It was about 9pm, and I was telling Joe about the book I was reading when suddenly.
KATHWACK. Gudunggudungungug.

On my old phone I have a photo of Joe sitting on the side of 95 looking under the front bumper. We don't know exactly what we hit, but we're thinking it was probably a piece of semi-truck tire. It did a number on the front bumper and we ended up having to pull off some of the underskirt that was dragging. We made it to the next gas station and fixed the rest with zip ties and duct tape.

I'm thinking I should pack zip ties and duct tape....
I've dodged my fair share of rubber chunks.

I may have frantically skimmed to make sure. I don't even want to think about if it hadn't been empty.

Nope!

La La La... I can't hear you!

Dun dun dunnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn.

Don't think I told you about that...

I meannnnnnnnn........you ARE coming through NC it looks like. It would depend on what dates you're looking at. We might actually be able to drive to you this time. Just let me know.

I'll send you a PM with some details.

I'm once again guilty of getting behind. I have enjoyed getting caught back up again. You're adventures always entertain and inform. June & July were very busy for me and as you know I like to read. When I get caught up in reading nothing else gets done. I just have to finish the book. I really enjoyed your visit to the museum. I would love to see the Uboat just to see the difference from out subs. Of course the only US sub I've seen is very small. It's at the same site as the USS Alabama. I also enjoyed the space information. When Danielle was a Jr in high school we went to a robotics regional competition in Huntsville, AL. They had a special nigh time event for the teams here https://www.rocketcenter.com/ . We had dinner under the Saturn 5 I think and then the place to ourselves. It was really a great experience. Also I didn't see "Hidden Figures" but I did read the book.

Until very recently...
five minutes before I wrote this, in fact...
I had been told that
Japanese tradition holds
that spirits can only travel
in straight lines, which is
why Japanese bridges
or pathways zig-zag.

Learned something new.

Love this massive,
yet narrow bodied bell.
Yes, I did ring it.
You are invited to ring
the bells in the gardens.
They can symbolize
many things, depending
on the ringer's perception.
Some feel they welcome
other guests, others
simply listen to the tone
and take a moment for
self-contemplation.

Or some ring it just because they can't keep their hands to themselves.

These are beautiful!

This looks delish! I would like the coleslaw too.

I demurred and chose
a much more pedestrian
double scoop of
Apple Pie and Peach Cobbler.

Sounds really good. I usually like my apple pie and peach cobbler with ice cream.

And then the SUV began to slow down.

"Oh, come on dude.
If you're going to pass...
don't slow down."

I hate when people do this.

The SUV in front of me suddenly swerved
wildly off onto the shoulder.

I had no time to react.

My heart was in my throat.

As I smashed into the crate
at seventy miles an hour,
the resulting explosion
turned my idyllic drive
into anything but.
Plastic shards flew everywhere.

OH nooooooo!

After coming to a stop,
I exited the car and checked
for any damage.
There were shards of plastic
wedged under the hood,
and a small area on the bumper
that was now devoid of paint,
but other than that,
there appeared to be no damage.
And best of all.... no blood or fur.
I have to admit that in the split
second before I struck, I had
thought that the crate was empty.
Now I was fairly certain.

This turned out a lot better than I thought it was going to. Best part is you weren't hurt and you didn't harm an animal.

Did you see it in this chapter?

Yes I did. Nice that your marked it.

But please ask, if you wish.
Maybe the answer will be "Yes". :)

Looks like a nice drive but you're not coming far enough south.

I'm once again guilty of getting behind.

No you're not.
No guilt with this TR. :)

I've had to learn
how to put a book down.

I really enjoyed your visit to the museum. I would love to see the Uboat just to see the difference from out subs.

It was cool... and I'd like
to do the same,
but in reverse.

Of course the only US sub I've seen is very small. It's at the same site as the USS Alabama

I think it's cool that
you've seen one, though. :)

Yeah... that too.

Dang kids!
And stay off my lawn!

These are beautiful!

Yes, they were. :)

This looks delish! I would like the coleslaw too.

It was all good...
but that burger was amazing.

Sounds really good. I usually like my apple pie and peach cobbler with ice cream.

They took out the middleman. ;)

I hate when people do this.

Yeah. Drive, already!

My heart was in my throat.

Mine too.

OH nooooooo!

Unfortunately, yes.

This turned out a lot better than I thought it was going to. Best part is you weren't hurt and you didn't harm an animal.

I will admit, I got lucky.
Could have been much worse.

Yes I did. Nice that your marked it.

;)

Looks like a nice drive but you're not coming far enough south.

Not this time.
And when I do, it's with DW
and she is not into DISmeets.
At all.

I haven't been taking much time to comment these days...we're just visiting some family today in Maine before making the trek to the happiest place on earth in the morning!! But I just wanted to mention what beautiful photos you posted in your last update! And how incredibly shocking and nerve-wracking to smash into a dog kennel so unexpectedly!! I'm so glad you and your vehicle came out relatively unharmed, and that there was no evidence of an animal hurt in the incident. What a wild drive!

 But you took the time to comment here!
I'm honoured! Really!
I know you're busy traveling right now.
Thanks!

before making the trek to the happiest place on earth in the morning!!

Yay! You're going to Lubbock, TX!!!

But I just wanted to mention what beautiful photos you posted in your last update!

Thanks! :goodvibes

And how incredibly shocking and nerve-wracking to smash into a dog kennel so unexpectedly!!

Unexpected... yes,
it was certainly that!

I'm so glad you and your vehicle came out relatively unharmed, and that there was no evidence of an animal hurt in the incident. What a wild drive!

And it ain't over yet!

Now I'm curious.
What were you expecting?

I'm not exactly sure, but definitely something a little more exotic? That one seemed a little too neat and tidy for a Japanese Garden.

I paused for a moment
to capture some of the
guests enjoying the flowers.

Beautiful shot! I enjoyed all of the flower photos in this update.

I am interested in how
varied the different
Japanese gardens are.

Now this one is more what I pictured for a Japanese Garden.

But... DISmeet, coupled
with ice cream???

Definitely a must do!

I glanced over the menu.

Looks very good! But I am a little disappointed with the Pittsburgher. It's missing a key ingredient, the coleslaw..... Primanti Bros.

the "Cold Sweat" ice cream.

Yikes! :crazy2: But I really am curious to know what the Exit Wound flavor is.

As I smashed into the crate
at seventy miles an hour,
the resulting explosion
turned my idyllic drive
into anything but.
Plastic shards flew everywhere.

:scared1: Wow! Scary.

And best of all.... no blood or fur.

Oh thank goodness, that would have made a bad situation much worse.

Did you see it in this chapter?

Grrr, I read through every word on the restaurant menu and the ice cream list and yet I still missed this the first time through. I'm just going to chalk it up to being enthralled by your writing and beautiful pictures.

And finally, to this:

I would absolutely love to do a DIS meet if you have time. Of course I totally understand if you don't have the time for it. Also, I'm headed back to Disney this fall so there's a chance I may not even be in town when you are here.

The Arboretum houses several
garden types, including...

A Japanese garden.

I mean, come on.
Why else would I be here?
Are you not paying attention????

Huh? What'dja say?

I am interested in how
varied the different
Japanese gardens are.
There are similar elements
common among them,
but the presentation differs.

They are beautiful. I like the idea of seeing infinite variations on the theme.

I had been told that
Japanese tradition holds
that spirits can only travel
in straight lines, which is
why Japanese bridges
or pathways zig-zag.

Ok. If someone told me that, I'd buy it.

Apparently... this is not the case.
The reason the bridges
and pathways zig-zag...
is because it looks nice.

:rotfl2::rotfl2:

This is like the way we decorate our house. Someone asked what our style was and we said, "Stuff we like."

The sand (or gravel)
is raked to represent
ripples or waves.
The carefully placed
elements within the sand
or gravel are meant to
be seen as islands.

Interesting. Now that I did not know.

Bells are found in Budhist
temples throughout Japan.
They are used to call the monks
and to demarcate time.
Interestingly, they normaly
do not have clappers and are
instead meant to be rung
when struck from the outside.

The kids may or may not have enjoyed the big one we found at the Buddhist Temple in Hawaii we visited.

Originally, when I had planned
this road trip, it was from
Winnipeg to Milwaukee.
A round trip distance of 1,600 miles.
I have friends near Chicago,
and that would only add
another 100 miles, so...
Chicago got added on.

And then...
A nice young lady asked
if I would swing by
and pay her and her hubby
a visit.

Well, sure. I mean, how hard could that be?

And then she played dirty.
She told me that there
was a really good ice cream
shop there, too.

Well, now you have to go.

I went from 1,600 miles
to 1,700 miles....
to 3,400 miles.

I like ice cream.

Dude! :scared1: :faint:

Does the ice cream cure cancer?

Annie ( @SoccerDogWithEars )
had suggested we meet at
Bad Daddy's Burger Bar.
With a name like that,
I wasn't going to say no!

With a name like that, I'd probably add the extra 1,700 miles too.

It turned out that they
were running behind
and would be about
twenty five minutes late.

I drove almost 2,000 miles
and was ten minutes early.
But... to be fair,
they did have to come from
across town.
So... pretty far.

:rolleyes1 :rotfl2:

While I waited,
I glanced over the menu.

Looks like my kinda place.

They sat down and
we just started yakking
like we'd all known each
other for years.

Yeah, I try not to yak in front of somebody unless I know them really well. It can be embarrassing.

That may have been
one of the best burgers
I've ever had.
Holy crap was it good.

High praise! Annie and Joe know their stuff, apparently.

As we chatted,
Annie and Joe intimated
that they wanted to take
me somewhere as a surprise.
I had a niggling suspicion
and asked if it might be
the local Harley store.

I hope I didn't disappoint
them too much when I
informed them that I'd
already been.

Of course you had.

Yes, I'm an awful person.
But then, you already knew this.

::yes::

We drove for what seemed
like a fairly long time.
After about thirty minutes.
I decided that either
I was going to be beaten,
robbed and left for dead
in the wilds of North Carolina;
or there was something
truly magical at the end
of the road.

Last I checked, Disney World is not in North Carolina. Aren't you closer to where Deliverance took place?

Thankfully, it was the latter.
(Please keep your disappointment
that it wasn't the former to yourselves.)

I'm not THAT cruel. Sheesh.

I was warned about
(and slightly dared to try)
the "Cold Sweat" ice cream.
The ingredients therein include
tai chilies and habaneros
which, (as if that wasn't enough)
are marinated in "Mega Death" hot sauce.
And then, to cap it off,
the ice cream is seasoned with
ghost chili sauce.

You actually have to sign
a waiver before they'll
serve it to you.

We have one of those at an ice cream place around here, too. I don't know what would possess anyone to try it.

I demurred and chose
a much more pedestrian
double scoop of
Apple Pie and Peach Cobbler.

That sounds really good!

I must admit to wondering....
What would they do if you tasted
all 120+ flavours....
and then declared you were too full
for ice cream when they asked
you to finally order?

You get your photo on the wall!

Along with a sign that says, "Do Not Serve This Man."

I cannot confirm or deny
that I didn't shove
Annie's ice cream on her nose.

Double negative makes it confusing....

Normally, a DISmeet for me
lasts anywhere from 5 minutes
(just a quick hello/goodbye)
to an hour or so.
(If there's a meal involved.)

I wound up spending four
hours with these wonderful people.

Wow! This can only mean that Annie and Joe must be pretty awesome.

I glanced over at Betty
and saw that I had
about five more hours
of driving ahead of me.

Well, as long as it was a nice, easy stretch.

I settled in with the car
on cruise control.

Good idea! Then you can take a nap.

I quickly checked my rear-view mirror
and the shoulder to my left
to make sure I had some escape options.

The SUV in front of me suddenly swerved
wildly off onto the shoulder.

:scared1: Never a good sign.

As I smashed into the crate
at seventy miles an hour,
the resulting explosion
turned my idyllic drive
into anything but.
Plastic shards flew everywhere.

Yikes! I'm glad it wasn't something more solid!

I have to admit that in the split
second before I struck, I had
thought that the crate was empty.
Now I was fairly certain.

(big sigh of relief)

Who knew that smashing
into a dog crate wouldn't
be the worst thing
that happened that evening?

This is not sounding pleasant.

Did you see it in this chapter?

::yes:: Not sure why that place would want to advertise that fact.

Originally, my drive was going
to look something like this:

Seems reasonable.

But as plans changed
and others chimed in,
it morphed to something like this:

A decent chunk, but could be fun with interesting stops along the way.

And finally, to this:

:scared1: There must be a lot of ice cream down that way.

But even that isn't a sure thing.
I might go through Delaware
(time permitting) instead.

Wait...what??? Why would you want to do that? Do I need to remind you of our state motto?

If you're interested in me popping by
and saying hello, let me know.

:wave2:

But... fair warning...
Do not be offended if you ask
and the answer is "No".
Some things I just can't do.

No worries. You were already on the receiving end of that when I couldn't make Winnipeg work. And I was really hoping you weren't offended at that point. You can't do everything.

If you can't fit it in, I'll completely understand. If you can, we'll try and take good care of you.

Bad Daddy's is amaaaaaaaaaazing. We love them. It's on my list of places to take @Captain_Oblivious if he ever makes it to the area.

It looks like a place I would love! We were (somewhat) nearby last month coming back from Disney. We ended up stopping in Fayetteville for the night. Maybe I should have taken a detour!

Man! You have really been updating like a crazy man. At least the previous one was short and sweet. Boy you drove a long long way that day. And yes I did see it. How did you get the spray paint can cage opened for a guy like you? :confused3

I'll have to come back and read the latest one.

No you're not.
No guilt with this TR. :)

Thanks for the absolution.

I hear that.
I've had to learn
how to put a book down.

I haven't learned that yet.

I think it's cool that
you've seen one, though. :)

I've actually seen this one a few times.

Wow! That is cool!
Lucky!

It was really cool. I'm glad we had the chance to do this.

Which would automatically
be far superior.

I should read it too.

I learned a lot. I have a feeling they added to the movie to make it more interesting to movie goers.

Um... Just looking at what
you quoted.
You got that I was wrong, right?
It's zig zag because it's pretty.
Not because of spirits, or anything.

Of course.

Yeah... that too.

Dang kids!
And stay off my lawn!

I was thinking more about the big kids that can't keep their hands to themselves.

They took out the middleman. ;)

But I really like the combination of hot and cold.

I will admit, I got lucky.
Could have been much worse.

So blessed.

Not this time.
And when I do, it's with DW
and she is not into DISmeets.
At all.

I guess you'll never make down here to meet us. :sad1:

It looks like a place I would love! We were (somewhat) nearby last month coming back from Disney. We ended up stopping in Fayetteville for the night. Maybe I should have taken a detour!

I had actually meant to message you and see if you would be coming through and if you wanted to meet. But then of course life happened and I remembered right about the time Julie posted about being the mountains of NC. And I didn't want to seem overly creepy and be like "Hey! You're in my state, we should meet!"

Looking at your map, it looks like you *might* be going by Rockford, Illinois? I think I told you about the Japanese garden there - https://andersongardens.org/ Definitely worth a visit if you can swing it.

So sorry to hear about your DisDad friend.

And, yikes about the dog crate!

120 ice cream flavors...I'm guessing the line moves slowly because no one can make up their mind!
