Canada Trip Photos

I've put together my traditional post-vacation slideshow for our Canada trip. It is on our usual slideshow page.

It was a great trip. We loved Vancouver Island. Banff and Jasper were great. Vancouver itself was a bit of a let down compared with the others, but we still had fun there. The exchange rate was brutal to us, so we spent a little more than we'd planned. The kids loved it.

Now I'm ready for WDW in October (business, no family), Mexico for Thanksgiving, Colorado for Christmas, Monterey for Spring Break, and Colorado, Grand Tetons, and Yellowstone for next summer.

The cameras used were my 1D Mark II, our old 10D, and our Pentax W30. For lenses, we used the 17-40 f4, the 24-70 f2.8, and the 70-200 f2.8 IS. I made extensive use of a polarizer and occasional use of a close-up filter.

Hi Mark,

I just went through your smugmug album. Very nice pictures and beautiful scenery.

This is also my first real encounter using a smugmug album. I have to say, I'm impressed. It is very smooth, and I like that it's very easy to access the metadata for the shots.

Your pics are fantastic!!! Love them. DH and are are planning on going out west in 2010, yes 2010, and I am already in the planning stage! I am always in vacation planning mode no matter how far away it is . Visiting Glacier, Grand Tetons, and Yellowstone. I will look forward to your pics from next summers visit.

I'm glad that you liked that one. I had to get out of my sleeping bag while everyone else was sleeping, drive off to the site, and then wait for an hour for the light to be right. Sadly, the wind picked up, so I didn't get the mountain reflection that I was hoping for.

Technically, we'll be staying in Pacific Grove, CA. Since almost no one seems to know where that is, I usually just say Monterey or Carmel. I think we'll be there from March 15th to the 22nd or 23rd. We got out there for a week most years, but we skipped last year. It'd be great fun to meet for dinner or a photo shoot or something.

anyone that dives there knows where Pacific Grove is, because that's where the decompression chamber is located if you get bent.

a ? what settings did you use for the johnston waterfalls...beautiful... i have a hard time getting a slow enough shutter speed for a really nice blur like those were....so thinking i need a neutral density...so any tips would be appreciated.

1/4s at f11. I'd strongly recommend going very early or very late so that you get entire falls in the shadows. We had a mixture. I attempted to correct in photoshop, but that never works very well.

I typically use anywhere from 1/15 to about 2 seconds for blurring moving water. I usually just lower the ISO to 100 or even 50 and then use a moderately small aperture (f/11-f/18). I don't like to go too small with the aperture or the diffraction effects get annoying.

One of these days I need to get some neutral density filters to give me better control over shutter speed without forcing me to a narrow aperture. I also need to get some graduated neutral density filters. I was suppose to borrow some for my trip, but the guy couldn't find them in time.

I also ran into a guy shooting at Two Jacks Lake that was using a yellow/blue polarizer. He made it sound really interesting. I might have to get one of those two.

Two many toys to buy, not enough money. I think my list is now:
1) 100mm or 180mm macro
2) 24mm and 90mm tilt shift lens
3) Fisheye lens (and lessons from Groucho)
4) Split neutral density filters
5) Some collapsible reflectors/diffusers
6) Ring flash
7) Neutral density filters
8) Focusing rails
9) Good pano head
10) 400mm f/2.8 lens

Now I really want to plan a trip to western Canada. My BIL moved to Calgary a few years ago and we always talked about visiting. This maybe our next summer vacation!!
