Our next cruise is the NYC to Canada cruise. It's such a different cruise than anything in the Caribbean with respect to packing.

To start with, everything is so much bulkier... shorts don't take up much space, jeans do.... and then there is no beach attire!

Anyone done the Canadian cruise and have any insight?

Thanks...

When are you going? The fall?

If so, I recommend simple items like hat, gloves, and scarf. The nights can get chilly. Alongside, a good windbreaker.

I live in Canada. October is weird. Average weather can go from 39 to 55ºF (4 to 13ºC). It could be a little bit warmer if you are coming in the beginning of the month (we've seen 75ºF) and sometimes we have a little snow around Halloween.

I would recommend: Jeans (my husband also likes having larger polyester pants than he can put over his jeans when it gets windy), a warm hoodie, a scarf, a hat or a tuque (just in case), a good pair of gloves (magic gloves are usually enough but polars are the best if your hands get cold easily) and yes, a good windbreaker.

I haven't done a Canadian cruise but I've travelled to less tropical climates quite a bit. You can always use the packing cubes or other "vacuum" types of aids in reducing bulky clothing volume - but don't forget about weight. Multiple layers of thin garments are generally more manageable than the big, bulky sweaters or jackets. I've gotten away from jeans and prefer the 'tactical' type of rugged cotton pants for the fact that they are more comfortable, and they take up much less room in a suitcase. Brands like UnderArmour, 5.11, and Kuhl. Good luck and enjoy your cruise!

Yes! We took a Canadian cruise a few years ago and packed sweaters and jeans. When we got to our first port we stepped off the ship and it was 80 degrees. We lasted about 5 minutes and had to go back to the ship and change lol. Our daughter actually swam every single day on that cruise because it was so warm. She pretty much had the pool to herself because I don't think many people thought to pack bathing suits.

Not surprised! Bring swimsuits just in case. Especially if the pool is heated. Here, sometimes when a jacuzzi is warm enough we swim in the middle of winter.

You will quite likely get all 4 seasons, sometimes within the same day, that time of year.

I did the Canadian cruise last October and sure didn't need a hat, gloves and scarf. It was colder at the sail away from NYC than in Saint John and Halifax. I wore a tee shirt and denim jacket, the kids wore jeans and long sleeve tee shirts. I swam when in port at St. John. YMMV. Keep an eye on the weather. It's so hard to predict in early fall.

Sounds as if we were either on the same cruise (Oct 2) or just had the same experience. It was really cold, wet and windy up on deck at sail away and so lovely the rest of the trip. We were pleasantly surprised at how warm it was. We started most days off with jackets, but they were soon left in the car as the day warmed up. I know it's a cliche, but the best recommendation I have is layers, layers, layers. Be prepared to add a layer / subtract a layer as weather conditions warrant.

We loved that cruise. The area is so beautiful and thought it was a great time of year to visit.
