Okay...choosing words carefully here as I'm not part of any gangs...but, since you brought it up, I don't get the whole gang mentality accusations that fly off the keyboard so readily these days.

Think about it--if one person thinks something is odd or stupid, doesn't it stand to reason that a lot of people might think the same? And if something someone does annoys the heck out of you, doesn't it stand to reason that more than one thing they do is going to annoy the heck out of you? It doesn't necessarily mean it's a pile-on. It doesn't mean you're out to get them. It means they're a person you rarely agree with.

What I see happening on these boards is reverse gang mentality. People are controlling what other people say simply with the threat of the gang mentality accusation.

Well, I just read 9 pages and I still don't know what the bumper sticker said.

I live in NJ, and I believe the employer has the right to ask the OP to remove the sticker, or park off-property.

I'm probably in the minority here. While I dying to know what the bumper sticker says too, I respect the OP's right to keep that info to herself. If you are aware at all about the what has happened at the DIS a couple months ago, you know that what happens on the DIS doesn't necessarily stay on the DIS.

If the OP posts her bumper sticker and it turns into a heated debate, something very likely on the DIS, even if she later deletes the info, or even has the Mods delete the whole thread, a screen capture picture could have been made of her post & posted, umm, elsewhere, where she can't have it deleted. She may receive nasty PMs, backlash, (or whatever) because of it.

MySpacers, Facebook people & Youtubers will tell you, if you don't want something in cyberspace, don't put it out there.

The OP didn't start this thread to post her political views, she came for info. Through the help of us DISers, she got the info she needed. She found out the distinctions in the 1st Amendment, that even a person only leases the driveway instead of owning it, he has been leased the rights to privately use it as he pleases. And perhaps, her political views which may seem normal to her, might be more politically & emotionally volatile (to others) than she realized.

If the OP doesn't want to be associated with the message on her bumper sticker she wouldn't have slapped it on her car. It's a message she is fond and/or proud enough of to have everyone she knows (and strangers, too) reading and associating with her.

So, I don't think she's keeping it a secret because she doesn't want to be associated with the message. Maybe I'm wrong.

The OP did state that it wasn't bad, or inappropriate. It just states preference as to who she likes in the election.

That is why I had asked if it was for the other team (whatever one that may be) would the boss ask her to remove it. That is why I said it is discrimination because the OP did say that the boss likes the other.

I mean I still think its ridiculous. I am a Democrat and I am now supporting Obama because I was supporting Hillary. Many of my friends will be voting for Mcain. Doesn't mean I have less respect for them, I just think that the employer is really out of line in asking her to do this.

If she is not involved in politics as her job, then it should not matter. Because if it starts there, then what if she had a Tinkerbell sticker on her car and was asked to take that off.

Glad to know the bumper sticker is still on. I would still park in the lot but that is me and I tend to make a statement.

Freedom of speech issue, plain and simple. Your employer may be able to fire you for it, if he wishes, but I'm certain the American Civil Liberties Union would be delighted to hear about it if he did. While some may be advising you that this isn't worth fighting, I'd advise that this isn't something your boss should want to push too far.

For my part, I'd fight it as far as it needs to go. No employer is going to control what I put on my privately owned vehicle.

The ACLU would most likely NOT want to take this case, and it is not as simple as "freedom of speech." As other posters have said, the political speech on the bumper sticker can lead clietns to believe the company owner endorses that point of view and may cause clients to stop patronizing the business. I know I personally do feel very strong opinions when I see political messaging associated with a business, and if it is messaging from "the other side" they are ver, very likely to not get my business.

And you should "fight it as far as it needs to go" and park your car down the street and walk your sorry butt the block or so to the office. It is an easy enough solution. If the owner accommodates the selfish, opinionated employee and loses customers to the point that he ends up closing shop or limiting work hours, is the employee going to pay him back for the loss? Shouldn't he, under yuor theory of the employee should always get his way?

How many people work in offices where you are not allowed to display items of a political nature? How is this so different? And how is this so different from a dress code, even? I can't wear shorts and tank tops to work, but today the office is about 80 degrees and I am dying from the heat. Damnit, I SHOULD be allowed to be comfortable, and curse the boss who doesn't let me! Maybe tomorrow I'll wear a sarong and a string bikini top and push it as far as it needs to go.
