Yep.

You can write inside them but then you would have to make sure your child knows to tell or show the CM the message. I don't think they will look for it there.

You might also want to put clear nail polish or something over the writing to protect it. We wrote on our then 3 year olds Magic Band and his sweat smeared the writing quite badly.
