Can you still change/upgrade a hotel room booked through a 3rd party when you are at the hotel in person ?

We had a heck of a time last March when we booked a hotwire deal...apparently it only had 2 people on ressie, but we had 2 adults and 2 kids. Disney basically said their hands were tied and could only make note on the ressie to have 2 beds instead of a King (2nd adult was my 15 yo son). I did this through their 3rd party number- its different than regular Disney number. They kept saying only hotwire/expedia could make the change. I spoke with 3 different people on 3 different days and got the same answer. Hotwire/expedia would not change, only offered to cancel the reservation. Main issue was magical express as we couldn't get all members on with them being on the ressie. Disney stated each time that they use to have the flexibility to change number/names (as long as within capacity of room) but could no longer do it. In the end, the trip was cancelled due to Disney shutting down and we got our money back.

I have booked third party reservations a few times when it was a better deal, and have received minor complimentary upgrades a few times, things like standard view to garden view. I was not treated any differently than someone with a reservation booked directly with Disney. Upgrades are done at Disney’s discretion for their operational needs. The best advice is to book the room you want when you make the reservation rather than relying on an upgrade.

If you want to know if an upgrade is available, you will need to go to the front desk for check in and ask what it would cost to upgrade to the room type you hope to stay in. If it’s in Disney’s best interest you might get lucky and get a complimentary upgrade, or you might have to pay to upgrade, or there might not be any availability to upgrade. I would give the same advice regardless of whether the room was booked through a third party or not.

I booked a Hotwire deal the week Coronado opened for a crazy low price. We then asked if we could upgrade to the tower, and we’re given the option for $50/night charge for upgrade, which brought the total to $107/nt for GDT. Would’ve been ok with our Casitas room, but also loved the deal we still had in all per night for the tower.

Thing to remember experiences that happened in the past are totally different from what they could be now with all the COVID changes at Disney. There might not be a room available to upgrade to.
