Everytime I turn around, it is something else with this computer!! :badpc:

Okay, put my memory stick in from my camera to download a picture - nothing. The software usually automatically loads and starts the download process. Well, I go into My Computer to click on the drive - it's not there. ??? I take the memory stick out and re-insert it again. This time I notice the little light doesn't light up on the CPU panel as usual. Does this mean the disk drive has gone bad? Does this mean I have to call Dell and argue with them again?? :furious: We have a one-year warranty - do you think this is covered and what do you think I'm going to have to go through to get it fixed?

Start/control panel/add-remove hardware. Does it see the memory-card reader or is it listed as "unknown device"?

Okay - can't find it. I do start/control panel/ and then that option isn't there? I can add/remove programs and there is printers and other hardware, but even clicking on the last one doesn't give me those options.

Make sure the card reader is pluged in tight to the port. The cord may have come loose. If all is OK, try rebooting. If still not working, try plugging something else into that port and see if it is recognized. If not, the port may have gone bad.

Mine is all internal - it's a slot on my CPU panel. I suppose that could have come loose inside, but I'm not opening the computer - way too scary for me!! :teeth:

Really, it won't bite. You said it was a Dell so just take the side off it. You would think nothing of looking in your kid's mouth and they could bite! If you're using Windows XP and are using "classic view" you should have "add hardware" as a selection. It has a built-in troubleshooter for hardware issues which works maybe 10% of the time!

Rebooting won't erase your pictures, and I'll bet it will fix your problem. I have to do it sometimes when the computer won't recognize - say - my thumb disk (flash drive).

Wasn't using classic view - switched to that and found add hardware. Okay, but then big long list of items - what am I looking for on that drop-down list??

Tried it - didn't work. :sad2:
I was watching the CPU panel while it did it though, and all of the lights on the other drives flickered (CD, DVD, and then some other on the bottom), but the light by this drive never flickered.

I'm not afraid of it hurting me - I'm afraid of me hurting it!!
Seriously, we can't get to the back of the computer without crawling behind the desk, and that's just always DH's job. I've got a major case of claustrophobia! If I pull it out too far, the other cords come unplugged, and I never know where to plug them back in. So, DH has banned me from messing with the back of the computer. Of course, he's out of town, and DD really wanted this picture to go on her flyer tomorrow, but I guess it's not happening!!

Okay, you've found add hardware. Good. Now you're going to open that up and click next (hardware is installed). It'll look for any devices on your system and if it doesn't know what it is, you'll see it noted with a big yellow question mark. Since the light doens't flash when you boot up, I think either the cable is unlplugged internally, or the USB hub it goes into has gone belly-up.

An additional question for you -- do you have the cables which came with your camera? INstead of simply using the card reader to get the data, if you've got the camera to USB cable which undoubtedly came with the camera, you can plug it into the camera, then plug it into a open USB slot on the PC and you should be in business. There's more than one way to skin the ....

Aha!! Now what did I do with that cable?? It's got to be around here somewhere!

Depending on your filing system -- at this point that would be the easiest way. Then you can wait for the DH to get home and pull the PC out from it's home before inspecting further...

Oh well, I'm off to bed. I'll check in tomorrow and see how it went :thumbsup2

THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!! :woohoo:

You saved me!! DD was not too happy with me since she wasn't going to be able to make her flyer for school tomorrow! She's running for class president - 2nd grade?? :confused3

Thanks again!!

:thumbsup2 I think I speak for the rest when I say, "Glad we could help." That's what DISboards is all about, right?!! :cheer2:  :wave2:
