Looking to plan a trip to california would staying at a disneyland hotel for 7 nights be a bad idea? What are your thoughts on this? Any input is appreciated

It all depends what you want to do. We just stayed for 10 nights, not at the DLH, and had 7 park days. A couple days were pretty light but it allowed us to tour at our own pace and have down days for other activities.

Give some specifics. How big is the family? Do you plan on doing anything other than Disneyland?

I will say if I could go back and spend 7 days at DLH right now, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I doubt you'll find anyone around here tell you it's a bad idea.

We are five women going ranging in age from 18 to 65. I was thinking a week in May.

What airport is the best airport to fly into to be close to disneyland. How much would a cab be from said airport.

Can't say if it's a bad idea since it's been a little over 20 years since I've been to Disneyland. However, we are planning a week long trip in October. (21st-27th) Our first day we will visit DTD and do dinner at Goofy's. Monday-Friday will be our park days, and Saturday we will fly home. We are doing 5 days in the park because we have 8 children (at the time of our visit the oldest will be 11 years and the youngest will be 11 months), and figure we're going to need a lot of time for touring.

We spend 7 nights because it allows us to go slowly. With the kids, we usually go in the morning (since they are up at the buttcrack of dawn) and then come back for naps and rest time, and go out in the later afternoon/evening until close. We have not been during summer hours, so close is 8-9pm and not super late. It is really nice to take it slow that way!

Well you might have trouble filling your days at DL/DCA since the most they sell is a 5 day park hopper. You can upgrade to an AP or buy more seperate tickets. You might get lucky and get a CM that will add an extra day on for you, but I wouldn't count on it.

With a preschooler currently on night 6, I think 7 nights would be great! However, it all depends on what you want to do-how many rides, shows, etc. We haven't seen everything. We also take a break from the parks for much of the afternoon and evening. Early days were early, later days late. For instance, today we took the monorail in (front car)at 8:30, then did ITSM, then rode the tender on the train, then Minnie's breakfast (with substantial character time), then Treehouse, Sailing Ship, Dole whips, and naps.

We like a leisurely trip. There's also plenty to see and do outside of Disney.

Personally, it's never a "bad" idea to spend lots of time at Disney! :rotfl2:

You probably don't need seven days to see Disneyland Resort. In case you're using WDW as a reference, DLR is much smaller. There are only two parks and DTD, all of which are within walking distance of each other (you can see all three from the main esplanade). That being said, there are lots of fun things to see and do and if you have a long trip planned, you can afford to take things slow and relax. :goodvibes

In terms of airports, the closest is probably John Wayne (Santa Ana, SNA). It's about 20 minutes from DLR. I don't know about the cab cost, but you might give the phone number for the yellow cab company a call and see how much it would cost to get to DLR.

There is also a Super Shuttle that goes from SNA to DLR. It says it's $10 per person.

I always spend a week at DL whenever I go. You can plan on spending 3 or 4 days at DL and then sightsee the rest of the time. I always stay at GCV and use that as my home base.

Most people fly into LAX because you have more flight options, but you can also fly into SNA which is smaller and a little closer. I would take a shuttle(Super Shuttle or DL shuttle) to/from the airport. I think a taxi will be too much.

If you decide to stay off property and won't have a car, try to get a hotel on the ART route. You can use it to get to DL, the malls, restaurants, and even to the metro link station.

A week is awesome. Not too much in my opinion. We usually do 6 nights and we love it because it lets us take it easy. If you don't get on a particular ride one day, there's always another day. And if it's busy one day, there's always another. And if the weather is crappy or too hot one day, there's always another. You get my drift? We also like to get up early, do the parks in the am, swim/rest in the afternoon, then finish off the day at the parks. Perfect way to begin and end a day! :cloud9:

I cringe when friends tell me they are going to DLR for the first time and think 2 days will be long enough. :scared1:

Enjoy your trip!

I couldn't. I love all things Disney, but I would get bored after 7 nights...unless I was going other places during the week.

Personally 3-5 days is plenty and you don't have any kids in your group that may want to ride the same ride over and over.

If you find yourself have "done" everything, there's always Knotts Berry Farm 15 minutes away and Legoland about an hour south.

It might not be a bad idea to mix in a trip to Knotts or the Zoo in between. Both parks are pretty affordable. It's a great way to clean the palette mid week, so that you go back to Disneyland with new perspective :)

Of course you can- especially if this is your first visit! May is a nice time and the weather is usually pretty pleasant. You could take a day to just enjoy the hotel pool and downtown disney. You could also do a day over at Huntington Beach or something, or go to Newport Beach for the day. Catalina is also not too far and can make for a wonderful day trip for a group of ladies.

Sure can! And easily fill them. The nice thing about that many days is that you can take your time and do some other things that a quick trip might not allow. There are some wonderful tours that you might want to look into (20% discount for Disney Rewards Visa card holders), leisurely meal places (like the pricey chef's counter at Napa Rose and less pricey ice cream on Main Street). There are little nooks and crannies to explore like all the shops on main street, asking about the Lily Belle and so on. If you want to spend 7 days at the park, you can easily do so.

Some numbers to consider.....

Airport - John Wayne (aka Santa Ana, aka Anaheim).
Cab - 20 mins to 40 mins depending on traffic $40.

Disneyland Resort claims 91 Attractions on its website for the 2 parks
Disneyworld Resort claims 120 Attractions for the 4 main parks

We go for six to ten days each visit. Two early-teen boys and the wife and I. We do not get bored as some people do. We like to stay at the DLH and take our time doing everything. Everything includes all the amenities at the hotel and the parks. We like our vacations to be relaxing and quite enjoyable. A week to long? Hardly, it is the minimumumum for us.....:cool1::cool1:

We stayed for four nights and that seemed like a perfect time to spend in the parks. Although we did not do the pool much, and the park was opened late. Because of this staying later may be a good idea. I would suggest though if you are staying that long do off-site things.

We are going to in October. We do have two small children though and are looking forward to enjoying the parks, chilling out around the pools, eating, seeing shows (maybe even twice), going to bed early, relaxing.

Some people think we are crazy but we like to spend time in places and enjoy it for what it is rather than rushing through and ticking boxes.

I suppose it's how you want to travel.

When I first went to DL as an adult my friend and I spent 6 nights and had a blast.
