Might be a silly question but hubby went to the store this am. Was helping me out by running errands.

I asked him to get a rump roast (on sale for $2.69 lb). Well he picked up a rib roast because it

c'looked' bnicer. But i was $10 lb!looked

It's a little more than I would spend in a rib roast and more than I had budgeted. I have never returned meat before.

Any help is appreciated

Once a food item like meat has left the store, I doubt that it can be resold again. I have returned chicken that I discovered to be spoiled the next day when I went to use it, but never because I selected the wrong item. I think you should enjoy your roast.

I am sure you could, but I wouldn't. Even though $10/lb is way more than I would pay. I would cook it and enjoy every bite of my expensive dinner with a nice bottle of wine.

Yes, it can be returned they store will have to throw it out. They can't resale it.

I guess you could return it, but why would you? :confused3 The store can't re-sell it.

The holidays are coming ~ put it in the freezer and enjoy the splurge. :)

Yes. You can indeed return meat. But they won't resell it. I'll leave it up to your conscience to decide whether husband bought the wrong item is a legit reason for a return of something perishable that they can't sell again.
Rib Roast is delicious though and is a far better cut than is a rump roast. Heck. It's a holiday. I'd simply enjoy every bite of it myself.

The only time I would return meat is if it was bad (spoiled). Like others have said they can't re-sell it. I would cook it and enjoy it.

The store won't be able to re-sell it, and I can't imagine asking a store to take the loss if I (or someone in my family) was the one who messed up. Obviously, if there was something wrong with it, I would have no problem with returning it. But I think it's not ethical to do so just because your husband got the wrong thing.

Years ago, my husband bought something by mistake. I'm drawing a blank on the exact product, but it was in a can. He bought it, realized it was wrong before he got out the door, and went right to the service desk to exchange it. The employee tossed the can into the trash! She told him ALL food items, perishable or not, had to be thrown out for safety reasons. We've never returned a food item since unless it was spoiled. If we screw up by making the wrong purchase, we live with it. I get that they would need to throw out perishable items, but an unopened can is ridiculous, IMO.

Why not cut it in half? Use half now and freeze the other half. I do that with rib roasts all the time.

The store doesn't necessarily take a loss. If they don't cut the meat instore it may just be picked up by the supplier. Can't imagine why an employee would toss a canned item. Anything that cannot be sold is normally picked up for credit. Milk, bread, dairy products, frozen foods, etc are all returned to the supplier.

Sorry forgot to mention that I wanted the rump roast to make sauerbraten. I've never used a rib roast and I don't think I would ever make a sauerbraten from a rib roast! Lol

I love sauerbraten and you're right, don't make it with the rib roast. :)

So its OK for the supplier to have to issue the credit?????

I worked for a supplier and its just not that easy and anymore, many supplier have stopped issuing credit for just that very reason.

So then the supplier takes the loss. Not any better in my book.

You will LOVE the rib roast, just don't over cook it. We try to have one for Christmas or New Year.

Have it on thanks giving day. A turkey out there will thank you.

If the store made the mistake I would say return it, but since the mistake is your husbands fault, I would not return it. Cook it and enjoy it. Chalk it up to a life lesson. But it would be really unethical to return it.
