Can anyone tell me whether there is still snow in New York in January and whether the lake is still iced over and do people still ice skate on the lake?

I am going in January and its something I have seen on the TV but wonder if it does actually happen ?

Thanks

Denise

It will all depend on the weather and how much the ice formed on the lake prior to your arrival.

I do know that for a couple of years my DH and DS went to New York and camped on a frozen lake in mid-February - one year there was 15 inches of ice and a year ago there wa 23 inches. Other years, there was no ice at all and the Troops camped along the lake on the shore.

Winter is definitely in full swing by January. If we had a cold December, I'm sure you'll find plenty of frozen lakes for ice skating, especially upstate.
But since you said you saw it on tv, it just occured to me that maybe you meant ice skating at Rockefeller Center? I dont know, just a thought, but you definitely can ice skate there in January.

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: I'm sorry to laugh, but JANUARY IS WHEN OUR "REAL" SNOW SEASON STARTS! That's when it starts to snow and never seems to stop and we get our bad temp drops (way neg, try -30). The lakes up here stay frozen til March to my knowledge. Definately in Jan and Feb. Last year it snowed until May LOL!

I grew up in Plattsburgh, NY on Lake Champlain. The lake was always frozen in February. Thats when my dad took me ice fishing. I think the lake stays frozen until March or April. Our winter didn't really start unit January and lasted until Easter.

Yeah winter in New York...definately not warm in January! But i live by Lake Erie and if December is mild the Lake won't even be frozen near the edge at that time. My favoite scene is in the spring when they take the ice boom out of the lake and you see huge chunks of ice floating down the Niagara River when it's about 60 degrees outside.

Are you tlaking about NY City? What you have seen on tv,are you talking about all the people skating in Rockefellar Center? Or in Central Park?

Rockefellar center is an artificial skating arena, and YES, definitely skating in January. Same with Central Park.

As for lakes, it depends on how cold the winter is up too January. Alot of times, especially lately, we have had some mild winters in that it has not been below freezing long enough to get a THICK base of ice. That is the danger. I am not sure, if you are talking about upstate NY, then yes, they can be much colder.

Snow has nothing to do with ice. It can snow, but not be cold enough to freeze water.
