Can you carry a pin collection on the plane?

We're considering just doing carry-on bags for our upcoming trip to save time and money.

My son is into pin trading and has a nice collection. Can we bring it in our carry-on bags?

We found it best to put our pins into the suitcase. You aren't allowed scissors or other sharp objects so we thought it was best to avoid heated discussions with security guards. :)

Yes, you can bring pins on the plane no problem. DS12 brought his over the shoulder carrier as his personal item with no problems at all.

I've never had an issue with pins in my carry-on. My family as a whole has had too much stuff stolen from checked bags now that you can't lock them that I wouldn't risk it.

p.s. You can bring scissors on the plane, if they meet certain criteria. (Shorter blades, etc.)

We always pack pins in our carryons - they are fine (as are scissors with blades 4 inches or less).

I would never put anything of any value in my checked bags as they can be opened at any point.

The TSA website is a great reference for what can and can't be brought onboard. Since things can change I check it before every flight.

You CAN lock your bags, they WANT you too, but they must be TSA approved locks. They can then easily open the luggage if they need too. They put a note in your luggage if they do open it. They are clearly marked TSA and indicate which Key is needed to open them (if airport security has too). By the way, they are not expensive and can be purchased at Walmart or Target, etc....few dollars for some piece of mind! :thumbsup2

Sorry but IMHO a lock that anyone at the airport can open isn't a lock to me. I use a zip tie or a key ring to keep the suitcase from accidentally opening and anything of value is left at home or kept with me in my carryon.

Way to much opportunity for someone to help themselves to other peoples luggage.

I have a mickey carryon for my kids pins and its quite heavy...and expensive. I asked at the SW counter and they looked at me like i was cookoo.....so YES they allowed us to bring them on ; )

For anyone who is reading this thread later, TSA lock does not mean anyone can open the bag only a TSA officer. Gate staff, baggage handlers etc cannot open the TSA lock so is still worth locking your bag.

Never put in your checked bag anything you would be upset to lose.

I too have had no problems carrying my pins on.

I have been bringing small bags full of pins home from Disney in carry on for years and no problems ever.

Still valid today. As of 2019 we traveled with our pins as carry on and plan to do so again in 2020
