Can you borrow some points from a certain year and then bank the remaining points?

If you have 150 points coming June 2006, can you borrow 75 of those points to be used now on a stay and then bank the remaining 75 points into the 2007 use year points?

Yes, you may borrow from your 2006 Use Year to make a reservation and the remaining points in that year may be banked into 2007.

You may bank the points once that Use Year begins.

I agree with Doc, but you'd have to wait until your 2006 use year opens to actually do the banking. You could even borrow the 75 2006 use year points and bank other 2005 points taking into account the banking deadlines. This can be very useful if you need to cancel, downsize or are trying to reserve a hard to get unit type and you have more than one home resort.

We do this every year because we are bi-annual visitors. We went in 2003, borrowing from our 2004 use year. We banked the rest of the 2004 use year into 2005 and and are using 2004/2005 points (but not borrowing from 2006 this trip) for our 2005 trip.

This seemed like a good post to tack on my banking question.

After you've banked points, are the oldest points always used first when making reservations?

That is, if I purchase 250 points, but only use 225 a year, would my banked points keep accumulating at 25 a year (up to a maximum of 250 points). I ask this because I understand you can only bank points for a year, and I want to know if it works like I'm assuming it would. Would it work like the following over several years?

Year 1 225 used 25 banked -> 25 in the bank
Year 2 225 used 25 banked -> 50 in the bank
Year 3 225 used 25 banked -> 75 in the bank
Year 4 225 used 25 banked -> 100 in the bank

etc.

In general DVC will use the banked and/or borrowed points first, but there is no rule or guarantee they will always do so and there are examples where they have not. Thus you should remind them. And if you make a reservation then later bank, the banked points will not be automatically be substituted. Though you can usually cancel and rebook some days to substitute the points and free up "current use year" points.

Sorry, but you can only bank into the next use year. If the points are not used during that year, they are then forfeited. So in your example, you would have to do it like this:

Year 1 225 used, 25 banked into Year 2 -> 25 in the bank
Year 2 200 + the 25 from Year 1 used (225 total), 50 banked -> 50 in the bank
Year 3 175 + the 50 from Year 2 used (225 total), 75 banked -> 75 in the bank
Year 4 150 + the 75 from Year 3 used (225 total), 100 banked -> 100 in the bank

Same end result, just slightly more math and keeping up with your point balances and banking deadlines.

Thanks ksoehrlein and Dean. I'll remember to remind them about banked points when I reserve.

Your math ksoehrlein is what I was implying, I was taking a shortcut in my presentation. Thanks for clarifying how it actually works.

I just wanted to make sure that if I only used 225 the 2nd year, that a rule didn't exist that would make me spend all 225 out of the current years allotment. I wanted to make sure I could use any banked points first, before getting into the current years points. You have confirmed this.

Thanks for the great info!
