Can we use the monorail?

If our park tickets don't go into effect until day 2, but we're staying at POR on day 1, can we use the monorail and buses on day 1?

You can use the monorail or buses whenever. You do not need the tickets to ride any of the Disney buses or monorails. They are free. We like to go riding around WDW on day 1 when we arrive just to pass the time.

Technically to use Disney transportation you are supposed to have multi day tickets. But they don't enforce it.

Your first day with nothing else planned is an excellent time to ride the monorail which is enjoyable in itself.

Except for busy times (park closing) and high security times (late evenings) the only thing that inhibits "unauthorized" persons from using Disney transportation is the perceived lack of anything to do at the destination.

And much of the time, someone joyriding decides to find something to do, spending money in the process, which is what Disney wants.

(With few exceptions using swimming pools at a resort one is not staying at is not permitted and often enforced against.)

I believe registered resort guests also have access to the buses/monorail reguardless of having a ticket. You would just need your resort ID.

Personally, I have only ever experience someone checking the day after christmas in 2001.

Which is why even though many things are against the "rules" Disney will allow them to go on to generate supplemental income. . . .

I've just read on the disney website that guests of the resorts may use all ground transportation, and it doesn't have the three asterisk note that park tickets are required.

This seems to be a very hot topic on the boards. From what I understand, and I may be wrong, anybody who has an admission ticket can use all of Disney's transportation. Or anybody who is staying at a Disney hotel can use all of Disney's transportation. I was there a few weeks ago and used Disney's transportation, and I used my car. When I drove to a parking lot and used the tram they aways made annoucments that if I wanted to go anywhere in WDW I could.

Disney wants you to spend money at Disney and chances are, if you ride around on the buses or monorail and get off somewhere you are going to spend money, be it on souvenirs or food or drinks or whatever. If you stay in your hotel room then you don't spend any money, so while some others may disagree, Disney doesn't mind you using their transportation to get out and spread the wealth!

I am pretty positive that resort guests have access to all transportation, so no worries, it's perfectly legit for you to use the monorail or buses during your stay.

And yes, you should definitely go explore a bit, there's tons to see and do even without a park ticket. :)

We rode the Monorail our last night in town even though we had no tickets (had used them already) and weren't staying "in" the park. We drove to the Polynesian and hopped on and rode around one time. My 3 1/2 year old just loves the monorail and we wanted him to get another chance to ride before coming home. They didn't mind in the least.

On Friday December 9th you needed to show your ticket/not your room key to get to the walkway up to board the monorails at the TTC. I was surprised because the day before no one was there.

What time of day?

On mornings when crowds have built up I have often seen TTC CM's asking everyone to hold up their tickets or room keys as they pass through one of several sets of large gates to reach the ferry and monorail boarding areas. Crowds build up because the first express monorail and first ferry don't leave until half an hour before park opening, sometimes less. Crowds are often held back just beyond the ticket booths, and sometimes there is an opening ceremony there at TTC.

It was about 10:30am

edited - we were there the same time the day before when there was no checking. The weather that day was rainy and maybe less crowded??? So maybe that had something to do with it. We only rode the monorail from the TTC on those 2 days.

:goodvibes Was that an EMH day :cool1:

I think it was a MK early entry - we went to Epcot, but people were being stopped before even reaching the point of deciding which monorail to ride on. It was about 10:30am

When it is crowded they will do that at Epcot. I had to show my annual pass when it was like that several months ago. They wouldn't let you up the ramp until you showed your ticket.
