can we talk about trampolines?

Of course, insurance companies also ask about dogs.

One of ours asked about pets so I filled in our cats. I guess that was OK because our rates didn't go up. ;)

They ask about dogs because certain breeds are considered "dangerous" and some companies won't give you insurance if you have a dangerous dog and other companies will cover you but at very high rates. Typically they are wolf/wolf hybrids, Rottweilers, Pit Bulls, German Shepherds, Dobermans, Chows, Akitas.

Thanks for the link.

But I do wonder if there is any statistics of injuries like this for scooters? Or bikes or what about cheerleader/gymnastic accidents? I see all those fall in the same category in my mind - any of those things my kids do @ home can cause them to be injured.
one of our neighbor kids had a scooter accident in his own driveway, he fell forward on the handlebars.........ruptured his spleen, had to be airlifted and spleen removed.
scooters make me nervous too, my kids have them.

our insurance co was doing routine checks, just coming around to see if there were any new outbuildings, the lady was walking around and our dogs started barking at her, they were inside, i opened the back door and one was barking ferociously, and all she could see was her face........
they aren't mean, heck they would give the keys to the house,
but anyway, i had no idea then about the dog thing, and my dogs are mutts but have chow in them i suspect because of the purple marks on the tongue........anyway, i had to answer all kinds of questions about the dogs, and the agent called another day to ask more, it turned out to be fine, but it did worry me.

Thanks to everyone who posted on the thread! Even the folks that just could not help themselves and HAD to post horror stories! I told my DH when I posted this that would happen. DISers can't help themselves! They also cannot help using a scolding tone as they type, either!:goodvibes

The best thing about this thread is...we are also getting a horse this year...and a german shepherd!:sad2: Now I gotta worry about HI and that, too?

We did almost get a slide for our pool, but my DH did find out that if it is not grandfathered in, our HI would drop us, so we did not do that.

I guess I remember growing up, not only riding horses without a helmet, but jumping. My brother would make ramps out of rickety plywood and jump them on his bicycle, also helmetless. We rode ATCs and ATVs and mini bikes in the field next to our house....it was just such a great way to grow up. I do realize, we were LUCKY nothing happened to us. But I am really glad we had that opportunity. I wouldn't let my DD do some of those things...but some I would. I think the problem comes in with OTHER KIDS on your property are engaging in dangerous behavior. My DD does not push the limits, she is not a daredevil. I am aware that some kids are, and you may not know it until it is too late an an accident has occurred.

Soooo...on that note...we are NOT going to get a trampoline. DD said she would settle for a zipline.

*bracing self for barrage of postings against ziplines!*

Thanks again!

How lovely! if you really are getting a horse then I would advise the following:

1. EVERYBODY wears a helmet when they ride. Not one single solitary person is permitted to ride on my farm without a helmet.

2. If you have kids friends who may be coming over to ride, get yourself a good rider liability release form for their parents to sign. If you would like a copy of the one we use on our farm, PM me and I can send it to you. Check out your state's liability law. In NC we have to post a sign that is a state standard.

3. Get TWO horses. They are herd animals and require the companionship of other horses. Having just one would be quite stressing for a horse.

Hey Jennasis...you posted on my other thread about boarding horses. I don't know if you realize, you come off as very "know it all" and preachy. You are way too quick to share all the negatives. I was raised with horses since I was a child. I know how to care for horses. You gave me some long speech about having to have all these meds and stuff on hand for when a horse gets sick, etc etc. No one I know has an operation like that. I took care of my neighbor's horses for 10 days. She boards 2 horses. I fed them, watered, turned out, etc. No problems. Maybe you are talking about fancy, expensive show horses? We are getting trail/pleasure horses.

I already have equine insurance lined up...it is about $500 a year. Plus, we must have a sign posted that any equine activity can cause injury and even death. This is a state law.

I am not running a "farm" or ranch. I plan on riding without a helmet, like I have done my entire life. I would never dream of asking a friend to sign a liability waiver. Again, if this was a business, maybe. But not a couple of girls trotting around bareback on a bombproof horse. Yes, I know horses can spook. Yes, I know kids can and *will* fall. I cannot count how many times I have fallen off a horse. My trainer told me once, to console me when I fell off at a show (horse refused a jump, I flew over the jump...yes I had a helmet on as part of my show clothes) "The only people who don't fall off horses are nuns. Do you know why?"

I shook my head.

"Because nuns don't ride horses."

So true! Plus, most of DD's friends do barrel racing/ride western. Never wear helmets, just cowboy hats!

My paddocks adjoin the neighbor's pasture. The horses will have each other. I am actually planning on getting a mini horse and a horse. I may not get them at exactly the same time, but they will have other horses adjacent.

Anyway, I would like to think you are just concerned with the welfare of horses, and you don't want someone who is a complete novice getting horses and not caring for them properly. That's a good thing. I respect that. I just think you should maybe ask a few more questions before you assume.

Glad to hear you have most of the bases covered. Naturally I never condone riding without a helmet, but it's your skull so do as you wish. If I came off as preachy and know-it-all I apologize. I am an equine professional and just passing on info. Enjoy your new horses.

Thank you. I had bit my tongue on the last thread, but I had to finally get it off my chest. I do appreciate your knowledge and I probably WILL have some questions eventually, and I have always kept your screen name in mind to PM is I do indeed need to know something or get an educated opinion. Have a great day.

My nephew broke his arm really badly on their trampoline. He had to have surgery and it cost my brother and their family about 5K even after insurance covered its portion.

Just wanted to share. Not trying to offend anyone. :flower3:

ETA - I see you decided against the trampoline. I think that's for the best.
