Does anyone know if they will let you get an appetizer instead of dessert w/ the DDP? I prefer salads before my meal and do not plan on eating the dessert any way.

Reports from WDW are that such substitutions are never permitted on the basic plan under any circumstances.

Bummer about not being able to exchange appy for dessert. But what about trade a entree for a appy instead?

That, you may be able to do. But it would depend on the restaurant. You'd have to ask when you get there.

No as Disney is in business to make a profit....

Supposedly Disney restaurants want to turn tables over faster. If someone was allowed to substitute an appetizer for a dessert, you would see couples coming in, having the husband order an appetizer (split it), both order an entree, the wife then could order a dessert (and again split it). Plus appetizers are more time consuming to make and usually cost more. Allowing substitutions would defeat the purpose of eliminating them in the first place.

The point is most people save money on the DDP. If you dont like it, dont get it. If you have a 12 year old that eats like a bird, quit complaining about it and dont get it. I love when people complain about something that is OPTIONAL to save them money.

It is understandable that guests would be frustrated that the dining plan policies can't be altered or expanded to meet their dining or traveling preferences, especially if those preferences were met by the plan before the changes were made this year. But to be administered effectively, the plan should be applied uniformly across the board. Any alterations may be up to the individual restaurant.

I must say I have seen only one post from someone who stated they were able to substitute an appetizer for a dessert in 2008, but this occurred in the first week of January. This poster apparently either checked in prior to January 1 (when the 2008 plan went into effect) or encountered a server who did not yet know the current rules. All other posts on this board and other reports I have seen from WDW indicated that it is a property-wide rule that appetizers are never to be substituted for desserts on the basic plan.

And Disney isn't the government, if they didn't make a profit they'd go out of business.

Just to reinforce some of the other responses... no, absolutely 100% you may NOT substitute any first course in exchange for the dessert which the DDP includes.

You may, as indicated above, order an appetizer AS your entree.

You may also order and pay for an appetizer.

You do not need to order or eat dessert just because it's included on the plan you purchase.

You can, for an additional $32 per night per adult and $10 per night per child, instead all purchase the Deluxe Dining Plan which DOES include appetizers.

You can also simply not purchase ANY dining plan, instead paying out of pocket for only and exactly the courses you wish to eat.

Nail on the head. If you dont like it, dont purchase it. When I went I ate apprx. $55-60 a day on the dining plan and ate at fine restaurants that I normally wouldnt even have gone in. If you can eat for less than $38 a day at Disney than DONT GET THE PLAN!!!!
