Can u cancel Air Tran and book Southwest?

I booked our August flight to Disney on Air Tran through the Air Tran website. I have learned my lesson..... anyways.... I need to move our flight because we are extending our disney trip. I was avoiding paying the change fee and when I looked today the flight we need is full!! There is one around the same time on Southwest. Is it possible to transfer your flight credit to Southwest? I found no helpful answers on either carrier's website. THANKS!

According to AirTrans website, you will pay $75 per ticket to cancel, plus you will pay $75 per ticket to place unused airfare in a credit file for one year:

I can't answer the credits question; I would imagine you can't use your flight credits from AirTran on WN, but I'd call them to make sure.

I tried to do something like this last fall, so, the rules may have changed. I needed to change to a later flight, and there were no later flights on Airtran, but there was one on SW. I was told that I couldn't use the credit from cancelling to book a flight on SW, because, as they explained it, they were different airlines. But, since I knew that Airtran was ultimately going to be subsumed into SW sometime in the not too distant future, I decided to opt for a flight early the next morning on Airtran instead, which eliminated the problem of having a credit on Airtran. I couldn't get a clear answer on what would have happened to my credit if Airtran were completely merged with SW in the 1 year time that I would have my credit.
