I have our trip all outlined for October 2004 (9 nights beginning with Columbus Day Weekend), but now I'm not sure! I've been reading about how crowded it can get at WDW during this weekend, and am now wondering if perhaps the last week in September would be better? Any input would be extremely appreciated! TIA!

My family and I have visited WDW during October and both times during that weekend, and we haven't noticed any large crowds. In fact, October is our favorite time of the year to go. The weather is usually great (although it can be warmer than you might think at times), and there isn't usually the big threat of rain. We find we can spend more time in the parks because the heat doesn't wear us out the way it does in June or July. I think you will enjoy this time of the year. Hope this helps!:D

We went Columbus day week(arrived Sunday) in 2000 and it was mobbed. We also had record low temps, but no rain.
We went the last week in Sept, 2001. Obviously that isnt a good judge of crowds since it was deserted right after 9/11, but from what I hear it usually isnt too crowded then anyway. We had great weather, with only a few hours of rain 1 morning.
If you can easily change dates, I would take the last week in September over Columbus Day.

October is busy enough that Disney reclassified that month as "regular season" instead of "off-season" a few years ago. We used to always go in October (our anniversary is the 10th) and noticed the increase in crowds from year to year. We happened to go the last week of September one year and I thought it was much less crowded but definitely warmer, although temperature fluctuates greatly.

If less crowds is the #1 priority for you, pick September... room rates should be a bit cheaper too. If October is just a better travel time then don't worry too much... it's a little more crowded but not like mid-summer... average waits of 15-30 minutes instead of 5-20 minutes in September. Also be aware that September is a big month for rehabs and ride closures so you might have some of those to contend with. Of course, we've experienced that in October, January and February as well!

Have fun planning!!!
