Can someone explain gap kids sizing to me?

I just bought my son some shorts size XL (boys 12). First am I missing something or do boys go from kids to adults at 14 now? And second the size 12 is realy big. It looks like it would fit me and I am a small adult. My son is wearing 12 or even 14 in differnt brands so I thought the 12 would be the right size for him. Are gap kids sizes realy that differnt than other brands?

The only thing I can think is that manufacturers still think most kids have baby bellies and need extra room in the waist.

I don't know about the boys sizing but I wear a womans size 2 / XS and can wear a girls XL and sometimes L clothing. Girls size 14 pants fit in the waist but they're too short.

In my opinion Gap clothing runs very big in the waist for children. My dd8 cannot wear any Gap clothing because they are just too wide for her.
