Hi All

Just returned from short trip to NC on US Airways. The second leg of the trip was cancelled (no reason given). I have never had this happen before so I didn't know what I was supposed to do. (I guess I have been lucky up until now!)

The airline ended up shipping us to the destination after 2 hrs of searching for our luggage and then putting us in a van with other passengers.

My question is this--Should I expect some kind of compensation from the airline? After all, I payed to fly to my destination, not drive there.

Thanks for any info.

if they got you to your destination in a reasonable amount of time, and you are not an elite member, then you probably won't receive compensation.

Airlines no longer compensate for weather delays.

They MAY compensate for mechanical delays, usually based on the length of the delay and the status of the traveller. On a recent flight UA cxled my flight and I got to my destination 26 hours later. Compensation included 1 system wide upgrade, 1 500 mile upgrade, and $300 in travel vouchers. I can assure you that is very unusual, and is reflective of the long delay and my status with United.

I couldn't give you a reason for the cancellation since none was given to us. Weather was fine. The only reason we could come up with was the flight wasn't full enough. The flight was cancelled within a matter of hours.

I guess my point is that I paid more to FLY to my destination. I could have booked a cheaper flight and driven myself. Even though I eventually got to my destination, the airline certainly made out in this deal.

We were willing to rent a car one way but they refused to compensate that. Instead we had to wait around for hours and then drive for another 2 hrs.

I guess I've never heard of paying for one service and then getting less than what you paid for and not being compensated somehow. If that's the case, then I don't see any incentive for airlines not to continue this practice.

they WILL tell you the reason if you ask - did you call the airline? or if you check on line, it will usually tell you (ie 'crew', 'mechanical', 'air traffic control' etc)

did you read my linked thread? it will help you to be better prepared next time. It's important that YOU take charge and not leave it to the airline, or you will find yourself in such a situation.

I have rented a car myself and been reimbursed after the fact. If you know your options, you can make better decisions next time.

weather was fine were you were; but maybe not at the destination, or at the point of origin for the plane.

I flew a lot this week and there were substantial delays around the country due to bad weather in the central and southern regions of the country
