Can salad be substitued for appetizer selection?

I am noticing on some menus for a TS restaurant that there are great salad choices....could you substitute a salad choice for the appetizer that is part of the plan...or how does that work?

yes, you can Soup, salad, or app

I wouldn't expect to substitute an entree salad for an appetizer....just side salads.
