Can MS merge a reservation made with rental points then with my own points?

I added on a night in a GV last year, and it was added on (miraculously) the night before our originally scheduled check out date. We were able to stay in the same GV, but I did have to go to the desk to formally ℅ and check back in and get new keys. This was all done by the Ops staff at OKW. I still can scarcely believe I called at about 1am to see if we might be able to stay an additional night, and lo and behold (cue angels singing!), they had my add'l night, were able to charge my points, AND I was able to stay in the same room!

Linking reservations has been done for a long time, but things have changed a bit over the years in what circumstances that can be done. If the different rez's are on the same membership, no problem, just ask for them to be linked. As others have said, I don't believe that if the rez's are on two different memberships they can be linked, BUT the CM at MS can cross-reference the 2 rez's to alert the resort FD rooms assigment that this is to be one continuous rez. **In any case, I would DEFINITELY call the resort directly at 7-10 days before my c/i date to make certain they were seeing the continuous rez notes**.

If the reservations are on the same membership they can be merged into one reservation. Merging is preferable to linking because you end up with one reservation. You do not have to check out/check in again.

Linking is used to link together separate reservations that cannot be merged, namely reservations booked on different memberships. It is used to tie together reservations booked on separate memberships that are part of one continuous stay. I suspect that linking consists of simply cross referencing the reservation numbers and noting that the multiple reservations are one continuous stay.

MS used to link nights together even when multiple reservations were booked on one membership. For example, if a wait list came through that extended an existing reservation, they would make a new reservation for the wait listed nights and then link everything together. Since linked reservations used to function as one continuous stay (one check in), it wasn't a problem for the guest. Now they merge the reservations together where possible (same membership used to book all of the nights) so that members do not have to check out/check in again. Merging is relatively new, something they started doing just a couple of years ago.

That's why I prefer if at all possible to get points transferred rather than rent! Then the points are in my name and I 100% control the reservation process.

'Travel With' is used when you have multiple rooms for the same nights and you want those rooms assigned as near to each other as possible.
'Continuing Stay' is used when you have consecutive reservations booked on different memberships and want to try and keep the same room (subject to all being the exact same booking category).

Thanks!

Since transferred points don't show up in your online account (unless they exactly match your home resort and use year), you lose the one-hour online advantage by using transferred points.

Thankfully my DVC vacation planning in the last 16 years has never required nor depended on a one hour advantage!
