Can I take rice milk on an airplane for allergic child?

I will tell that I have never had a problem bring a bottle or sippy cup with milk (and actually juice) thru security for DS. I have even had juice boxes in my bag (as part of a lunchable) that I didnt realize and TSA asked me if it was for my son I said yes and they let it thru. Not to say you will have same experience but we travel a lot and never a problem.

Also an idea. Stick the milk in the freezer so when you go thru security it is a solid and you shouldnt have a problem. I just did this with water and TSA said it was totally fine since it was soild.

But I dont know about customes so you have to check that.

Are you talking about some kind of liquid food? Because you can bring solid food through security. Just nothing such as yogurt, apple sauce, etc.

Well, we started carrying one when we were not allowed to bring any food on board. However, we've had increasingly more difficult encounters as time goes by. I've been told that cheddar cheese was not solid enough. :sad2: And that berries were suspect. :sad2:
Honestly, it depends on who you get. And I'm from the "kill more flies with honey" south!

Isn't it "catch more flies" with honey? Or is killing them a southern thing?
(This Connecticut Yankee is having a little fun.)

Now, why would ya wanna catch flies, if not to kill them? ;)
We just get to the point, I guess!:laughing:

I have never had a problem my dd needed a special drink and I poured it in her sippy cup and just put it out separate and old the tsa person and they scanner it no prob and let us through.

A sippy cup or a couple of juice boxes is one thing but four full-size boxes of rice milk, you're going to have difficulty with the TSA for that. Any reason why you must carry the whole supply on the plane?

I got a great tip on how to pack liquids in a checked bag.....not that I would really do it but if you have to:confused3....

Wrap your milk containers in diapers, then ziplock bag them and then ziplock bag them again. I think I would be inclined to double diaper them as well...just to be sure. Then be sure to pack them in the center of the luggage where the package will be well padded with clothing.

Oh ya....use the heavy freezer ziplocks.

Let Me Google That for You. No.

Plant products are prohibited from entering the Bahamas unless you have permission from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. So you can't pack it or ship it. It would be a violation of Bahamian law unless you have prior permission.

Not sure that I'd consider rice milk a "plant product", in the sense that they mean. Usually they mean actual plants, since they are worried pests (bugs, viruses, etc.) that can harm the local plants. Rice milk won't do that.

I mean, you wouldn't worry about wearing a 100% cotton shirt, would you? That's made from a plant.

Plants aren't "products" they are just plants. I used to work for a food company and did some import export work. We didn't make rice milk, but we needed proper permits to ship in what we did make. Food product are sometimes contaminated and sample inspections have to be made when you ship in - particularly into an island.

We carry serving size cartons of soy milk on planes for my child- in his backpack with other things he wanted. I have explained each time that they are medically required and never had any issues. I also have an epi-pen and other supplies for an allergy related medical issue that I carry on board.

We have also gotten food (applesauce, fruit/veggie snack packs in liquid and medical grade formula in "juice box" type packaging) on the plane for DS that has food allergies. His pediatrician wrote a letter explaining his food allergies, we carry an epi and he wears a MedicAlert bracelet. We declared it medically necessary when we went through security and after seeing the epi's, they didn't ask for the letter from his ped.

They did give us a limit on how much we could take--enough for travel to WHERE we were going. On one trip, the TSA made me check some of it, but let us take a few of all of the above items on the plane.

As another food allergy mom, I feel for you. It is true that he really doesn't NEED milk (or any milk substitute). DS doesn't drink any milk--at all--not soy either. (allergic to both) He stopped the formula at 2 years old. You can meet his nutritional needs on vacation in different ways. Give him a tum everyday or OJ (fortified with Vitamin D) for calcium. He will get protein and fats anyway. We do this on an everyday basis for DS and his allergist and ped both say he is one of the healthiest kids they see.

ETA: Not sure what your DS's allergies are, but there is a powder we use for "hot chocolate" for DS, that can be used as a milk substitute. It is called DariFree and has all the calcium and many vitamins like milk. That link is to the chocolate version, but I believe there is a plain one. You could pack it in a ziploc baggie.

As for customs and all that jazz, I have no experience.

Good luck!

My DD6 has a dairy allergy and we take soy with us EVERYWHERE, an epi pen and benadryl. I also have her wear her allergy bracelet and have a note from her allergist.

I pack her soy milk in our checked bags- double bag in zip locks and then put it in a trash bag. I put one box in each suit case so if we end up with a lost bag we have some.

We have traveled with our girls to Mexico & Europe and not had any problems. I have never tried to get it on in my carry on as I don't want to have them dump it at the gate and then not have any milk.

However, make sure your son has an allergy bracelet that has helped us when we hit a snag. When she was 3 and headed to Mexico she just showed her bracelet to the TSA lady and said, "cow milk and eggs make me not breath and I get a rash".
