Can I Survive another 11 days in WDW w/ Disney-Resistant Husband? *11/25 SURPRISE!!**

(Continued from last post)

After our perfect, front row view was taken away by a new row of seats, a little disappointment started to set in, which was then quickly replaced by excitement once we realized for whom these seats were intended.

Within moments of the new seats being placed in front of us, none other than Tony Baxter strolled up and sat in the seat immediately in front of me and Carrie. Once again, I was within 2 feet of this Disney Imagineering rockstar.:faint: Sadly, he didn't seem to remember me from our elevator encounter the previous evening.:rotfl:

While she doesn't do autographs, I am pretty sure Ms. Lurkyloo couldn't resist taking a covert photo of the back of Tony's head and tweeting it out to show everyone who we were lucky enough to be seated behind.

Finally, the evening's festivities got underway. To get us warmed up, the disbanded but reunited Kids of the Kingdom took to the stage to perform a few sappy numbers. This brought some nostalgia back to the audience, which tied in nicely with all of the reminiscing we had done that weekend.

Then the Main Street Philharmonic band decked out in their majestic uniforms swept the stage from the rear of the auditorium filling our ears and hearts with some old familiar tunes. It was a wonderful surprise, and a great way to kick-off the evening.

Tim O'Day then took to the stage to introduce the guest of honor - Richard Sherman.

Richard started immediately into some of his many memorable and favourite tunes, with some talking dialogue with Tim O'Day thrown in between the various numbers. It was incredible to sit there and listen to song after song of favourite Disney melodies and to realize that one pair of singing-songwriting brothers were the creative geniuses behind them all. What a gift!

Richard Sherman is about the most charming and delightful man you could ever hope to meet. You can just tell that he thoroughly enjoys his craft and that singing and songwriting is indeed his true passion in life. He was having just as much fun up there performing his songs on stage as we were in listening to them. And he seems to be so touched and humbled by the fact that he is continuing to be recognized by the Disney community so many years later.

232323232%7Ffp%3B3%3A%3Enu%3D32%3C%3B%3E747%3E8%3B5%3EWSNRCG%3D34669788%3C%3A335nu0mrj

While Tim O'Day did a pretty good job introducing several of the songs, and filling in some background details, at times he seemed to be rushing Mr. Sherman along, who clearly wanted to talk more to the audience and share more stories. While the evening certainly wasn't short, I could have stayed there listening to Mr. Sherman a lot longer, and it seemed that he would have been quite happy to continue talking, signing and playing for us if allowed.

While I had heard Mr. Sherman tell this story before in past interviews, hearing once again in person the story of Walt's favourite song, Feed the Birds, and how often he requested the Sherman brothers to play it, followed by a live performance of the song by Richard Sherman himself was incredibly special.

232323232%7Ffp%3A%3C6%3Enu%3D32%3C%3B%3E747%3E8%3B5%3EWSNRCG%3D34669788%3C9335nu0mrj

Then, just when we thought the evening couldn't get any better, the original Dreamfinder and Figment came out on stage to perform One Little Spark live with Richard Sherman. The crowd went absolutely wild!

As a finale, the WDW Cast Choir and Band was brought on stage to close the show. They played a couple numbers, and then we were treated to a rousing performance of Golden Dream from the American Adventure.

232323232%7Ffp%3A%3C%3A%3Enu%3D32%3C%3B%3E747%3E8%3B5%3EWSNRCG%3D34669792%3C6335nu0mrj

Recognize Billy Flanigan? Yep...he's the guy who played Ken in the Barbie show at Epcot oh so many years ago.

The final number was a performance of Celebrate the Future, Hand in Hand, with an impressive solo from one of the young WDW choir members. Everyone, including Dreamfinder, Figment and Richard Sherman, was brought on stage for this final number.

It was a wonderful, wonderful evening.

For me, this evening was the highlight of Destination D. In and of itself, and without all the other treats, photos, stories, and imagineers that were shared with us that weekend, this evening alone was worth the price of admission, and then some.

(Once again, all photos are courtesy of Melanie.:goodvibes)

Up Next: Destination D Wrap Up, and the rest of our Trip...

Wow! The conference sounds amazing with so many opportunities to see/hear from Disney celebs and with such exclusive / once in a lifetime content. But I have to say I am getting stressed out just thinking about having to devise strategies to wait in line and secure seating. :scared1:

There was a Barbie show at Epcot?? :confused3

Hurrah for ~30 days til food and wine fun!!! Doesn't sound like they are planning anything for the MK's anniversary on 10/1 - have you heard anything?

I assure you Christine, that rushing the stage for seats was not mandatory or necessary. There were only a couple rows of crazies like us rushing for the front seats. The rest of the crowd walked in more leisurely, probably laughing at us the whole way.:rotfl:

The conference was really fantastic, and I am so glad I went. To be completely honest, to me, the D23 Expo in CA last week doesn't sound remotely as special, as interesting, or memorable as what took place in WDW for us. I am so, so glad that they did it, and feel so lucky to have been able to experience it.:goodvibes

Unfortunately, I haven't heard a word about any 40th anniversary events at WDW. Clearly, if they end up doing anything at all, it will have purposely have been planned on a very small scale without a lot of fan-fare.

Instinct still tells me that there will be something....some small commemoration....perhaps a special ceremony during the opening show in the morning that won't be announced until a week or two in advance. But I guess we will all have to wait and see.

Regardless, from the very beginning, I wasn't counting on Disney to do anything. I simply want to be able to look back years from now and know that I personally celebrated the special day by walking with my family down Main Street, U.S.A. :goodvibes

It was a great evening! I will never forget it! Are you excited that your trip is so close? Our cruise is 2 weeks away.

I don't think I've posted since the beginning of your PTR, but just wanted to pop in and say that I've really enjoyed your Destination D report. What a cool event!

Looking forward to hearing more of your PTR plans too. We now have a trip booked that overlaps with you (10/5-12), so I'll be keeping an eye out for your crew!

That must have been so exciting- thanks so much for filling us in, I kept wondering what was going on over there at the event, being that we were there at the same time.

And congratulations on scoring such fantastic seats!! :worship: :worship:

Thank you so much for these Destination D updates. It must have been truly magical and I am so glad you got to share your wonderful memories with us. :thumbsup2
Q

Whooo hooo! Join the club! Hopefully our paths will cross, and if they do, be sure to say hi!:goodvibes Thanks for posting and following along! You must be so excited for your first trip to WDW!!!:yay: Are you doing the MNSSHP? It is a must-do in my mind, especially if you haven't done it before. The parade and fireworks are excellent, and the atmosphere in the park can't be beat!
Yes, I am definitely doing MNSSHP! I can't wait to see that headless horseman galloping down Mainstreet!

Love it love it love it!! I am sitting here laughing to myself at your seat positioning because you sound exactly like me and my friends. How fun to do something like this! I got chills when you talked about Richard Sherman. He just embodies everything about my childhood! I really hope we can cross paths long enough to say hi! You will have to post your plans and reservations soon and I will post mine. Maybe there will be some overlap!!! I can relate to the busy, crazy feeling. I have been back to school teaching again for a month now (the joys if modified year round school... Although why I have such a wonderful two week fall break that I can go to wdw). So 150 new students and thyroid medication that I am certain is not right is taking it's toll on me. I really hope I am able to keep up with the schedule I plan at wdw. Hahah. I have made a lot more late night dinner res this year hoping we could just sleep in a little longer haha. I did just book haunted carriage rides for Oct 11 before we so the hddr. Are u still there then? Are you going to hddr?

What a wonderful experience that you had. I don't think that I could score front row seats like that, not aggresive enough.

I'll be in the world in only 10 more days! I can't believe how quickly this trip is coming! I need to start packing asap.:scared1:

Yeah you finished it up!
I was so glad you & my DH had such mad running skills because with my short legs there was no way we were scoring the primo seats we got.
It was such a magical evening & I still have to pinch myself that we were there. I am happy I could get such great pictures & it makes me happy to see them here. P.S.....thanks for not mentioning all the sappy tears & sniffing going on to your left.
Can't believe your trip is so close.....wish we were meeting up with you at WDW again. Our cruise is coming up fast too...which reminds me I need to get a PTR started.

Getting excited here for sure!;) But you and Brian are even closer than me! Have fun counting down the days! :)

Yep, we will definitely overlap for 5 days of our trips....I will keep a lookout for you as well, and do say hi if you spot us! :)

Thanks Ellen! I just got caught up on your report as well...you guys had your own little party/celebration going on too, that is for sure!

Thank you so much for these Destination D updates. It must have been truly magical and I am so glad you got to share your wonderful memories with us. :thumbsup2

Thanks for posting! Yes, it was a really great event. :)

Oh good! You would not want to miss it. I'll bet it will be a highlight of your trip!;)

I am laughing, because I would not have thought that I would have been as aggressive as I ended up being to get those seats. I went into the event completely bewildered about how or why Carrie was so intent on arriving early and standing in lines so early to get the front of the line seats. Then I surprisingly got caught up in the frenzy of it myself.:rotfl:

Wow...your trip certainly is coming up fast! Good luck with the final preparations!!!:)

Yeah you finished it up!

Hey Melanie, once again thanks so much for letting me use your photos. I never took any during Destination D, so my updates on it would not have been all that interesting without them. Hopefully you enjoyed reliving it again with me.:goodvibes

But as you know...our Destination D evening wasn't quite over yet....more on that shortly!;)

Be sure to post a link once you get your PTR/TR up and running. Can't wait to hear all about your cruise!:goodvibes

Nice updates! And fantastic running for those great seats. Thanks for the updates as this is probably the closest I'm going to get to the real Disney legends and also to one of these events.

Destination D Wind-Up

Just so I can prove that I wasn't dreaming, after our wonderful evening of songs and special memories with Richard Sherman, here is what I was looking forward to enjoying as Destination D came to a close, taken right from the D23 website:

Micks N’ Mingle
9:30 p.m. - 10:45 p.m.
One last opportunity to meet your fellow D23 Members, the D23 Team behind Destination D: Walt Disney World 40th and some of our special guest participants before we officially bring our extraordinary event to a close.

While I suspect that we had likely run overtime with the Richard Sherman portion of the evening, as we exited the auditorium there was absolutely no indication from anyone at D23 that the Mix and Mingle event had been cancelled.

As the auditorium emptied, many people were simply exiting the conference center...heading out the doors to the parking lot, buses or taxis, or over to the Contemporary. However, a good chunk of us remained standing outside the auditorium trying to figure out where the mix and mingle would be held.

During the entire two day conference, I had been really looking forward to the mix and mingle event. Ideally I would have enjoyed two mix and mingle events...one at the start of the event, and one at the end. There were so many Disney fans in the audience, and I would have enjoyed meeting more of them.

I also wanted to finally meet Lou Mongello in person, and thank him for the countless hours of enjoyment I have experienced from his podcasts. Over the course of the two day Destination D events, I had passed Lou on a number of occasions, but he was always surrounded by a posse of people, and the time never seemed right to approach him. I also wanted to say much the same thing to Ricky Brigante from the Inside the Magic podcast. Every time our paths had crossed during the conference he had always been busy with his laptop, no doubt busy posting live updates, and once again, I hadn't wanted to bother him. I kept thinking that the mix and mingle event would be the perfect opportunity to speak briefly with each of them, and perhaps get a chance to meet a number of other interesting folks who had attended the conference with us.

Of course, over the 2 day conference, I did get a chance to meet a number of conference attendees. I chatted up fellow conference attendees at the bar at the Wave while enjoying a quick lunch, in line for lattes at the Contemporary Grounds, and while waiting in various lines throughout the conference. Surprisingly, however, there had not been much opportunity to mix and mingle with other conference attendees. Our days started early and went long, and there really wasn't a whole lot of time to meet and greet other attendees.

I also figured that some of the conference presenters, and of course the D23 folks would also be there at the mix and mingle. As it was the last item on the agenda, by then the conference would be officially over and everyone could relax and rehash the wonderful conference we had just enjoyed before parting ways.

Unfortunately, this was a huge disappointment. While there was a large crowd standing around outside the auditorium after the Richard Sherman event ended, ultimately it became clear that there was not going to be a mix and mingle event. I thought this was really poor. If you are going to cancel an item on the event agenda, at least have the courtesy to announce it. :confused3

After hanging around with the crowd for about 20 minutes after the Richard Sherman event had ended, and watching a number of the imagineers simply leave the building, with no sign from anyone that a mix and mingle event would be taking place, many of us just left. It was a big letdown for me, and a pretty anti-climatic way to end such a great conference.:sad2:

I was also somewhat surprised that during the entire conference no representative from the company - not Meg Crofton, or anyone in her place from Disney Parks and Resorts, actually attended to welcome us to the conference. I thought that was really odd. I mean, why couldn't the President of WDW give a brief, 2 minute welcome to a conference taking place right on her property, to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of her Park? Or at least send her best regards, to be conveyed by someone on her behalf? :confused3

While Carrie was pretty beat, and headed back to the room after the Richard Sherman performance, I was still charged up from the great evening, and raring to go. Fortunately I was able to enlist Melanie and Eric to join me for drinks at the Wave Bar. Once we got there, we discovered that was where Imagineering and D23 were having their own informal meet and greet.:rotfl:

Once again, I found myself in very close proximity to Tony Baxter, and a number of the other "founding" imagineers and their wives. I was also completely starstruck to see Jason Grandt there as well. :goodvibes Most of the imagineers were sitting around a number of sofas and sitting areas just off the bar, but there were also a couple of them who were sitting at the bar where Melanie, Eric & I were seated. We didn't engage any of them in conversation, suspecting that this was their "off-time" to relax and bond with each other, but it was kind of cool sitting there beside them in the bar. ;)

It was nice to get to chat some more with Melanie and Eric, and rehash the wonderful conference we had just enjoyed. While they were heading out bright and early the next morning for home, they were nice enough to stay with me right up until the bartender signalled it was "last call". I don't recall the exact time, but I was shocked with how early it was - somewhere between 11pm and 12 midnite. I wished Melanie and Eric goodbye, and then stayed a few minutes more to finish my drink before leaving the bar. Although last call had been announced at least 15 minutes earlier, most of the imagineers still showed no signs of moving by the time I left.:rotfl:

Well....now what? I still wasn't ready to call it a day...too charged up and excited from the great conference to sleep. While I didn't know it at the time, Lou Mongello and a group of friends were upstairs at that very moment in a seating area just off the Concourse taping a roundtable discussion about the conference. I would have loved to stumble upon them, but instead, after exiting the Wave, I proceeded through the lobby, outside the main doors, and headed over to the Magic Kingdom. It was a short, 4 minute walk and it was still warm outside. The Magic Kingdom was having Extra Magic Hours until 2am, so it was a perfect way to cap off the day.

First stop was the Haunted Mansion to tour the new que line. Very impressive! Can't wait to return with the kiddos next month!

Then I just happily strolled around the park, enjoyed an ice cream, and shopped to my heart's content in the shops along Main Street.

Finally, shortly before closing, I stumbled across Anita (one of the members of our group) at Town Hall just as I was heading out of the park. Too funny! We had both been there in the Park by ourselves this whole time.

As we were chatting I realized that I hadn't yet seen the new que for the new Princess Meet N Greets, so we ventured inside to check it out. I think they were a little surprised that we weren't there for photos or any interaction with the princesses - I just wanted a peak so that I would know what to expect next month with the kids and because I was interested in seeing the new digs. It is quite impressive and very nice. I still have to figure out how that new meet 'n greet fastpass system works though...anyone try it yet?

Finally, shortly before 2am I was ready to call it a nite. I bid farewell to Anita, who was making her way back to her resort, and took a final late-nite stroll back to the magestic Contemporary to get some rest.

Next post: Final update of our Trip, including my 1st stay at the Grand Floridian and dinner at Victoria & Alberts

Nice updates! And fantastic running for those great seats. Thanks for the updates as this is probably the closest I'm going to get to the real Disney legends and also to one of these events.

Glad you liked it! And hopefully one of these days you actually *can* get to one of these events! :goodvibes

Wow - someone was working hard in the middle of the night on an update and checking out trip reports.

Too bad about the mix and mingle - I agree that they should have made an announcement during the conference. Still in all, it sounds like it was a wonderful conference.

And it sounds like you had a great evening at the Wave and during your solo time at the MK.

Can't wait to read about V&A's!
