I have a reservation Nov 1-5 at BWV for a 2BR. As it ends up we will only need the 1 BR portion. I was wondering if I could split the 2BR and rent the studio portion out. Could this work? Wouldn't want them to have to "let go" of the 2 BR for fear I might loose it? Just put the names on the studio part and let them know it will be seperate from our room?

No, we had the exact same situation at BW. You're booked as 2 BR so they would have to cancel and rebook as a 1 BR. Unfortunately that means it will be subject to availability :(

If you rent it out, your tenants will be on your bill and have the same key as you.

I started the above linked thread, and just updated it to provide further confirmation that you can cancel a portion of the room. It must be a lock-off (obviously) and you must cancel the entirety of the trip, but I have now had this info confirmed by 2 CM's and 2 supervisors.

and the points for the released portion would follow normal rules (i.e. go into holding if within 30 days of check-in), correct?

So what is the like hood of me letting go of the 2 br and then getting the 1br back? I guess my question is can they immediately put the 1 br on hold so I get that portion back? Or how exactly does member services "capture" the room?it would not go to a wait list person as that only goes through once a day right? I would just be risking someone online or on the phone at the same time grabbing it?

It could go to the first person on the waitlist who matches that requirement.

If Disney follow the process they tell people they do your one bedroom would be held from inventory until they had run the wait,it's process later that day then if still available out into inventory.

Not sure whether or not to believe that but it is what CMs have been saying about wait lists.

What I'm saying is that you don't have to put anything on hold or hope to get it back. Call member services and tell them what you want to do. A supervisor is needed to assist, they don't need to capture the room, its already yours. I just did this yesterday and the supervisor put a note on my account stating that I can cancel a portion of the lockoff.

Just call member services, they will make the change in 30 seconds.

My problem is - due to the banking and borrowing I did and the timing w my use year I really only want to drop it for 2 of the 4 nights otherwise it's just points lost. I knew when I made them it was a possibility now I just have to find the best way to minimize any loss. The one thing I learned I wasn't aware of when I made it was that I couldn't just drop part of the two br. That was my plan going in, seemed simple enough. Oh well! I think I either take the risk on our last night of the res and drop the 2br and rebook a studio- I keep 18 points that I can bank but will loose 3 pts or take a bigger risk an d try to drop last 2 nts of the 2 br and rebook1 br and loose nothing and have my 18 bankable points.....hmmm. Pretty comfortable w it if wait list runs once a day. Suppose I'll see what they tell me at member services before I make the final decision.

Yes, they were adamant with me that I could only drop all or none of the days, not just a few at the beginning or end. I actually didn't quite understand why, if they let you drop the studio portion for example, what does it matter if it's only 2 of the 4 days? You open up the studio for somebody else and keep what you had to begin with for the other days. Perhaps it's just too involving?
I would call, and I would be interested to hear what they tell you. As far as your plan of canceling and rebooking, I certainly hope that works out but you have to weigh that risk if you already have flights, etc...You are talking about an Epcot resort during F&W. I've been waitlisted at BCV for a 2br for 3 months and that's only for 1 night.
That's a risk that you need to consider.

If you downgrade for the entire stay they can probably just modify the reservation from a 2BR lockoff to either a 1BR or studio. If you want to downgrade for only part of your stay, they have to create a second reservation for the nights you want only the studio or 1BR. (I don't think the reservation system can split a reservation. MS has to modify the existing reservation for the new check-in/check-out dates, then create a second reservation and try to get your nights back again for the new room type.) I could see a risk in trying to do that, particularly at a busy time. You could end up losing the second part of your reservation entirely between the time they release the lockoff for the nights being downgraded and then try to grab back the 1BR or studio portion.

When I called this morning I got a cast member that was not very helpful. Basically she said if I could drop the 2 br but there was nothing available for me to book. I asked if I could just keep the 1br portion and she said that was not possible it went back into inventory as 2br and wouldn't seperate. I did not ask but at BWV they are all lockoffs and not dedicated right?

I would call again. It seems like this is one of those times when you have to get the right person sadly. this is one of my biggest issues with member services. I hate the inconsistency.

Really, it seems fair to not separate a 2 bedroom. What if someone else had been denied a one bedroom or studio because it was being used by you as a two bedroom? Or what if someone else really needs a 2 bedroom lock-off but was denied..now you have one you don't want, but you want to separate it. Shouldn't it fairly go to someone on a waitlist, rather than allow you to separate it? If there are no one bedrooms or studios currently showing as available, why should someone be allowed to separate a lock-off and bypass the reservation system?

I have to agree and I was not allowed to split...the CM even put me on hold to check with a supervisor and it was a no...other than the one person who has posted that they have been told twice so far they will be allowed, I have always heard its a cancel and a rebook...

This is exactly opposite from the historical perspective. Historically one could drop days at the beginning or the end (or both) without canceling but not split a lockoff. I've even been able to separate a single reservation into 2 without having to cancel. Personally I think each and every change should be a cancelation and rebooking, that those on the wait list are more deserving than those holding something different but related.

I think a lot of things we sort of took for granted with MS are slowly changing.

I have a Food and Wine reservation at BWV that I had decided to modify by dropping the first night. I made the call and after speaking with the MS CM decided I didn't want to take a chance on losing my reservation. The CM said that she would have to cancel my whole reservation and that it could 'disappear' to the wait list.

Now I've been around long enough and have dropped nights in the past. But, now I'm afraid to take a chance of losing my room. I don't know what they are doing down there - maybe a supervisor could do it, but I think I'll leave my reservation alone.
