Can I rent the studio part of a two bedroom?

Question to all of you with way more knowledge than I.

I got my family a 2 bedroom at the Boardwalk. My in-laws were supposed to come and I planned for them to stay in the studio part. Now they can't make it.

So can I rent the studio portion? Or would they have access to the one bedroom part of the suite as well?

I hate to use all those points on a two bedroom that we just don't need. I hate to just waste the space.

Looking forward to your wise advice.

Since the DVC Rent/Trade Board is not a discussion forum your question has been moved here where I'm sure you will get some helpful responses.

Basically, you have reserved a 2BR and not a Studio and 1 BR. Room keys will open both villas. The points involved for a 2BR are generally less than the points needed to reserve the Studio and 1BR separately. You have only one confirmation number for this reservation.

You will not be able to "divide" the 2BR into a Studio and 1BR.

I'd just go and enjoy the additional space for your family! :)

Ditto WebmasterDoc. Or book a 1-BR if there is availability, and if not, you can always waitlist it.

You might not *need* it, but (assuming you are traveling with kids) you might find that a 2BR is just a lot nicer for a family than a 1BR is. We found that having a living room that no one has to sleep in means that night owls/early birds have a place to hang out without waking anyone else.

Agree! It's just so much nicer to have the living area free. My DH & I get a 1 bedroom almost all of the time for just that reason. :)

A couple of years ago my brother and his wife flaked out on joining us at AKV where I’d reserved a lock off 2 br.. I called MS to remove their names and in chatting w/ the CM they offered to split the reservation leaving me w/ the 1 br. we usually got - I decided to just stick w/ the 2 br. and don’t know if there was availability, although probably not since it was a week in early Dec.. So it might be worth a call to see if you can go down to a 1 br. and ‘give back’ the studio to DVC & get back some points.
If you decide to try and ‘sublet’ the studio portion of a lock off then yes you & they would have access to the attached villa & everyone’s name would be on the same reservation & both they & you would be able to charge to the villa/room.

I agree with sndral...depending on how far out your reservation is, you should call member services and see if you can drop the lockout part and get your points back. But also depends on if the points were banked or borrowed. If you are more than 30 days out, they may be able to help you. I did something similar...and was allowed to drop the studio lockout side....but this was before all the nonsense caused by Covid. It is worth a try. Otherwise enjoy the extra space. We a,ways get a one bedroom for the two of us.

I think they'll allow this only when a 1BR is available for the same dates. Which means the OP could do it himself modifying online the reservation from a 2BR to a 1BR. Or he could take the very risky proposition of cancelling the reservation, hope no waitlist picks the rooms and book the 1BR, which I DO NOT recommend, since the is the very high risk of remaining with no room at all if someone (or the waitlist) is quicker.
However, I've read a report that with the latest upgrade the system now "understands" that you already have a reservation when you look for availability. So if one has booked Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday is available, the system would allow to modify the reservation to 3 nights even if Monday and Tuesday are not available. It's worth a try to see if now it allows to drop the studio portion of a lockoff 2BR

I have tried that to go from 2 bedroom LO to 1 bedroom by modifying online and it did not show up as possible.

So, even though it knows I have a LO, it is seems as a 2 bedroom with the online system and did not let me downgrade since no other 1 bedrooms were available.

My boss. Rented the studio portion from someone who did have a 2 bedroom ressie. their spouse is a cop.

both side kept the lockoff door locked.

but I would say the keys/magic bands opens both sides.
