Can I purchase 2 separate contracts and have 2 home resorts?

My husband and I are looking into buying DVC. We would really like BLT as our home resort, but do not want to spend the money to buy 200 points there. So, is this possible - buy 100 points directly from Disney for BLT and then buy 100 points as a resale at SSR? Would we have the option of booking 11 months out at both places?
Also, if we wanted to stay at BLT, could we combine the points and use them all at one place at one time?
The use year for both contracts would be Feb. and March, so they would be close together.

Yes, owning at multiple resorts will give you the Home Resort Reservation Priority when using the points owned at each specific resort. You can then use them at any resort within 7 months. This will work whether you purchase directly thru DVC or thru resale. With 2 memberships, you can't combine the points unless a transfer is involved, but you can still reserve individual nights from each contract and MS will link them together.

Enjoy!

Yes you can do that...but if you wanted to stay at BLT and use the 11 month window you could only use your BLT points...the same applies for SSR. Hope that makes sense.

So could I do this - say I booked at BLT 11 months out and the total would be 125 points, but I only have 100 in my BLT category. Then at 7 months, could I add the additional 25 points from the SSR contract?

Basically, could I reserve an entire trip 11 months out at BLT if it would take more points than what I currently have?
What if I said, I'll pay the 100 points and for the remainder with cash, and then use the SSR points at 7 months out. Possible?

I would recommend buying only one use year, so that you only have one membership number for your contracts. I have 4 home resorts, and they are all the same use year, under the same membership number. I can combine points from all of the contracts at the 7 month window. At 11 months, I can only use my BCV points to book BCV, etc.

If you buy contracts with different Use Years you cannot simply combine the points to make a reservation but you do have two options: 1) You can use your one transfer per UY to transfer points from one contract to another. Transferred points retain their home resort so this does not change SSR points to BLT points but would put them under the same account so that at 7 months out you could use some BLT points plus some SSR points to book the same reservation. 2) You can make two reservations, booking the first nights of your stay with points from BLT and the rest of your nights as a separate reservation using SSR points and have MS link the two reservations.

As already mentioned, in the "Home Resort Booking Window" (from 11 months to 7 months plus one day from check in) you can use only home resort points (BLT points at BLT, SSR points at SSR) to make a reservation. If you need to use points from both contracts to book all the nights you need then you would book as many nights as possible using home resort points 11 months out and then at 7 months out try to add on additional nights using non-home resort points, subject to availability.

Under your scenario, at 11 months out you could book as many nights as your 100 BLT points would cover. At 7 months out you could attempt to add on the additional nights you want with SSR points, subject to availability. If the nights are not available you could go on the waiting list.

Many of us who own multiple resorts use banking and/or borrowing to book our entire vacation 11 months out. For example, every other year I bank my AKV points into the next year and use two year's worth of points to book a stay. In the alternating years I stay at VWL, again using two year's worth of points.

ETA: If you book some nights of your stay with cash, you cannot convert them to "points" rooms. You would have to try to book the same nights on points at 7 months out and if successful, then cancel the nights you booked for cash.

Okay, I hadn't thought about banking and borrowing. Thanks for the great explanation.
If we sign up for the BLT points through Disney, we get 100 points now as an incentive, and the new 100 in March each year. So I would have 200 which would be enough for what we are wanting to do.

We are also planning on taking trips outside of WDW, so I wouldn't have to be as worried with those trips.
How far in advance can you book a hotel (not a WDW DVC resort) say in Belize or Cabo San Lucas?

I haven't been paying attention lately -- can you make an initial purchase, direct from Disney, for just 100 points? It used to be 160 points minimum for an initial purchase, although you could split the 160 into 2 contracts (100 at BLT, 60 at SSR).

Of course the way around this is to buy 100 points from the resale market and then "add on" only 100 points direct from Disney.

The best value is to use DVC at the DVC resorts. If you plan on trading out frequently DVC may not be for you. You can get other less expensive timeshares for those trades.

If you have 100 BLT points and 100 SSR points, with different UY's, then they will be different memberships.

You will not be able to use points from both contracts for a single nights reservation without doing a transfer between the two. And, you are only allowed one transfer per UY.

If you want to be able to combine the points at the 7 month mark easily, make sure you buy the same UY and title it the exact same way.

As far as the 11 month window, you can only use BLT points at BLT and SSR points at SSR. If you want more to book something with more than the 100 you own, you would have to borrow from the next UY (or have banked from the UY prior).

Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the responses!

As far as buying 100 points from Disney, right now that is their new minimum. The guy told us because of the economy, they lowered the minimum amount a new member must purchase from 160 to 100.

We actually decided to buy completely resale and just one contract. We put in an offer this morning for a 200 point contract at SSR.
I hope it all goes well!! We are using The Timeshare Store.

I have 7 different contracts and 3 "home" resorts. We own at OKW, our first purchase, BW and most recently VB. Love them all, each one is a different vacation experience!
