So, did you get the bigger size that is supposedly better for newspapers and such?

I have the Kindle 2, which is the smaller size with the 6 inch screen.

The bigger one , the Kindle DX, wont be released until 6/10. I have ordered one and will make a decision once I get my hands on it.

I was certain the bigger one would be easier to read, but I'm having an easy time with the smaller one and I think it will be easier to carry.

It's fascinating and dull at the same time.

I bought my Mom one for Mother's Day. And after several mind-numbing, blood pressure-raising days spent showing her how to use it, she seems to be really enjoying her new toy.

I may get the larger one when it comes out this week, I'll have to wait and see....

I've read that book! I was interested in it as a historical perspective of the World's Fair, but the serial killer parts just floored me. I couldn't believe what Holmes managed to do over the course of the events unfolded.

Bundy, Gacy, and the like had nothing on that guy.

I am very happy for you that you can read again after your eye problems. I can't imagine not being able to read, I love it so much. I have the Kindle App for the ipod touch. I don't know if I can adjust fonts, the font that I have been using is just fine. I love the background lighting, (great when you are at a child's violin concert and waiting for them to perform). So....enjoy!! I love mine.

Is everything available electronically? I dunno if I can curl up with that thing ... I have been listening to audio books in the car -- its a concession I've made since I realized I would never be able to read everything I want. Its actually worked out pretty well - I read what I absolutely must and I listen to what I feel about not having the time to read...

how much I LOVE my new Kindle?

I've got the kindle app for my iPhone and I really like it. I would love to have an actual kindle but I refuse to have one more gadget to carry around.

just cant see giving up the feel of a real book...and afraid I would end up dropping it in the pool

That would be a very bad thing.

So, did you decide to keep the new bigger one? Does it seem a lot different from your old one? I keep forgetting to tell my mom how much you love yours! This thread reminded me about it!

Hi Leah, welcome to the boards and the team. We are looking forward to hearing from you.

I think the best thing about it is that it will be great for traveling. I usually take a couple books to read when I travel and they take up a huge amount of room. They are also heavy. The Kindle holds 1500 books.

You can also subscribe to newspapers and magazines and have them download to your Kindle.

The only downside for traveling w/ it, in my opinion, is that I want to be reading when we are taking off and landing - the nervous parts By the time I can turn it back on, I'm asleep.

Have you read Stephen Kings UR, it was written for and only available on the Kindle. It's not bad - a novella, so it's not very long - I think it was $2.95, that was the first one I bought.

Have you checked out audible dot com? They have audiobooks you can download, and have several packages where you can download X number of books per month for a set price. I'm on an old package, but I get two books a month for $15.95, I listen to a lot, since I have to drive a lot for work and I get tired of the radio all the time and there aren't enough podcasts.

Kevin, I'm so glad you like the Kindle!

We've had a Kindle since the Kindle 2's were released. Someone mentioned curling up with the device. I'd definitely say that's possible. Once of the nice things about the design of the Kindle and the look of the screen is that you forget you have an electronic device in your hand.

The thing I like most is the ability to download samples of the books I want to buy.

Kevin, I hope you'll post a review of the Kindle DX when you get it. I'll consider purchasing one, especially if there's a subsidized version available. I wish you all would do an occasional technology podcast.

The Kindle would be great to have especially for book club. Not all books are "keepers" and if they were on the reader I wouldn't have to feel guilt about trading them. I know that when trading, books go to good homes, but getting rid of ANY book is very difficult for me!

(BTW, last month was The Art of Driving in the Rain, it was really good!

Hmmm, I'll check that book out. I have the Kindle 1, and I like that I can delete the book after I read it. It stays in my "library" on Amazon so I can always retrieve it. I can also download documents from the computer, though I haven't done it yet.

We love our Kindle. I bought the Kindle 2 and had it delivered the day it was released.

My wife's the real bookworm (she's always reading 7 different books at the same time - literally), and she's really enjoying it.

The greatest positive comment came on the Friday after she received it. She found herself *twice* reaching towards the upper right hand corner to 'turn the page'. She was that engrossed in the book, that the device seemed exactly like a book to her!

I LOVE my Kindle 2! I just got it last week and I'm flying through the books! It took me a couple hours of reading to reach that "unaware" state that you get when reading a book. Once you've used it you just keep on moving through the pages, just like a regular book!

One wonderful thing that I've noticed since using it is that my carpal tunnel hasn't kicked in even once! My right thumb and index finger start aching and falling asleep after holding a book open, especially if it's a big one. Don't miss that at all! Also, it's nice to be able to kick the font size up when my eyes get tired.

It's great to be able to just download a book, whenever I want it, instead of dragging myself and the family into the book store. (cheaper too!)

The Kindle 2 also has the "text to voice" feature on most books.

It will read to you.

I also agree that after a very short while, you will not see the gadget...especially if the book is engrossing.

Actually you can read right through take off. The way the Kindle works is that it splashes the screen with the new print and then turns off. This is one of the major advantages of an eInk display over an LCD. As long as you turn the radio off so it isn't looking to connect to the EVDO network it only turns on when changing the pages.

Obviously you haven't been on the flights I have with the nazi flight attendents. DOES IT HAVE AN ON/OFF SWITCH - THEN TURN IT OFF!!!! and they don't believe it's off unless the screen is black

Yeah, flight attendants aren't always up on technology and it might be a bit frustrating to try to explain to them how it works. I remember how long it took them to grasp the idea that there is a plane mode on most smartphones.

I would put it away and let them go sit down for take off and then just take it back out. You know it is off so it won't do any damage. Of course no electronics really will but that is a subject for a different thread.

Hmm, this may be a good idea for a father's day gift. Can you read it in the dark at all? Does it light up I mean? We use book lights a lot around here to not disturb each other so I'm wondering if I can use it with no lights?
