"Can I have half of your sandwich?"

So this happened to me at work yesterday, and I don't think I would ever have the nerve to ask someone this, and wonder if I am just crazy?

So, as some of you know, I am a flight attendant. In my business, you basically live off of airport food. I fly with THOUSANDS of different people, usually never the same person twice in one year. So, I really don't "know" many of my coworkers. This was the case yesterday.

Yesterday, we had a half hour break around dinner time. We all went our separate ways, I assumed, to find some dinner. I went to Subway, which as we all know, can take a bit longer than simply going to McDonalds. Anyways, I didn't have time to eat, and planned on eating in my hotel room later that night.

When we got to the hotel van, another flight attendant saw my Subway bag and point blank said, "Can I have the other half of your sandwich? I just totally did NOT have time to get any food."

Are you SERIOUS? How did we ALL find time to get food, but you didn't? You are a GROWN adult, so why do I have to take care of your dinner? On top of that, did you REALLY just ask me to give you MY dinner because you chose to be irresponsible while everyone else found something to eat? (FWIW, I am sure she was either socializing or texting or something during the half hour.)

I would NEVER have the nerve to ask anyone else for their food. I would of course accept if offered, but I would never ask.

Am I crazy? Is this normal, acceptable behavior?

(I did give her food, of course.)

How embarrassing i would never ask! unless this was a good friend of mine

That is pretty damn rude, especially if it's not a blood relative, spouse or very, very close coworker. And it's still rude for even a close coworker to ask.

Nope, that's pretty strange.

Whew, good. I was worried I was thinking rude thoughts.

Sure, for $5! :)
In airport prices, more like $8! :scared1:

I can't believe you gave her part of your sandwich.

Totally unacceptable for her to ask. Maybe she thought what you were carrying is what you didn't eat rather than your entire dinner of which you haven't yet eaten any.

A collegue of mine (who was new so I barely knew her) saw that I was eating a bowl of fresh strawberries and melon that I had brought in for lunch and reached forward and took one BEFORE saying "ooh, strawberries, can I have one?"

I was really surprised as it's something I would never do, especially to someone I had just met! My other co-workers said the look on my face was priceless!

You had to pay $16 for a subway sandwich!!! No way would I'd give it away in that case.

You were kind to give up half of your sandwich, but you certainly could have declined. Kinda weird to ask. Was there no food at the hotel?

Oh no, she knew. I can't believe I gave it to her either, other than that I felt bad that she would starve. :rolleyes1 I need to grow some, I guess.

Well, $8 for the whole sub... so $4 for "her" half.

It was late, it would have been closed... thus my feeling bad for her.

her behavior was NOT acceptable and NO WAY would I have given her any food:sad2::scared1::confused:

Yes you do. I would have told her no go buy your own :rotfl: And then looked at her like she was nuts.

Umm. No. There are restaurants and places that would deliver to the hotel. Or there's always vending machines. Even if I hadn't eaten all day, I would never have asked anyone to "share" their paid-for food with me.

Unless it was a friend or a family member, I wouldn't have done it. You don't know how crazy people can be. Imagine had they gotten sick for some totally unrelated reason and they cried foul towards you (claimed YOU did something to the food to make them sick). No, no, no.

I would have given her the benefit of the doubt. Maybe she didn't have any money, or she was trying to take care of something at home. I would have given her 1/2 the sandwich and not thought anything else about it.

I also would have told her "no, that's my dinner." You aren't in charge of her dinner. Hotels have vending machines. She could have just as easily had some chips or cookies for her dinner. She obviously wasn't picky if she planned on just scavenging for her meal.

No, you're not crazy, it's not normal, acceptable behavior. It must be working for her, though, since you gave her half! :rotfl: You're much kinder than me--I'm very selfish when it comes to my food.

Seriously? If you got hungry later would you not have had one single moment of wishing you hadn't given 1/2 your dinner away?
