Ok, experts. We booked a DING fare Dec 15-19. At the time, all the DINGS went only til 12/19. We really want to come home the 20th. Now I see a DING fare for the 20th, but we can't get a good fare for the 15th. Can I cancel 1/2 my other flight and use the credit for this ding?

You should always book one-way trips just for this reason. You have to cancel your original reservation and rebook the entire trip. You cannot cancel half.

Yes, I was just kicking myself for booking round trip.

But, how about if I do this...Can I book the return trip on the 20th with today's DING and then cancel my return trip on the 19th and get a credit to be used later??

I'd call customer service at SWA and see if they can split up the trip for you into two one-ways. The worst they'll say is "no."

It may be too late because the Ding has probably expired, but yes, you can do exactly what you said. If you just don't use the return flight on the 19th, then it will automatically cancel and the credit will be available for use within a year of the date you made the original reservation. Southwest is really so amazingly flexible in this regard compared to other airlines!
