Can I cancel just part of Southwest reservation?

I thought I knew everything about changing or cancelling a SW reservation until now. Our return trip into Providence went down by $5 through Ding. I brought up my original reservation # under the cancel section, but froze before I hit "cancel" because I'm not sure that it would give me another screen where I could cancel the return trip only. Would I have had to book under 2 separate reservation #'s originally to do this? I can't just do a change, because it involves a Ding fare.

I've changed past reservations so easily, the last being 2 years ago, and I don't remember having to cancel the whole reservation, only part of it. Maybe I'm just forgetting though, and received a Ding for both ends of a roundtrip, making it possible then.

Hope I'm making sense to someone!

You need to call SW to only cancel one leg. The phone rep can do this for you and free up the funds so you can book your ding.

I usually book separate one ways just to keep it easy for this except our Sept trip I had a $25 off coupon that required RT purchase.

Thank you, I wish I had booked each way separately to make things easier. I know others have mentioned doing so, and now I see why. At least I now know to call SW if it is worth cancelling to save the some money, but I have to say that I'm a little insecure of being on the phone with them and being on my computer ready to book a Ding fare as they make the cancellation. I've gotten used to having 2 windows open and doing the cancellation and rebooking. Then again, I could have that window open to rebook at the same time as speaking to the rep.

If I see another Ding in the future, at least I'll know what to do! I'd be afraid to mess it up somehow for what would have been a $25 savings. Still glad I booked at $104 each way PVD to MCO, because other than a few $59 fares in late May into June, I've only seen the fare drop to $99 with Ding. We are flying around the 4th of July.

Exactly. It's actually better to cancel by phone or so I was told my 1st time doing this by a sw rep. She said sometimes canceling online 'may' take a few minutes to actually appear as usable funds. When you cancel by phone it instantly frees up the funds. She walked me through the whole thing while on my computer to make sure we got everything we needed.

Since then I've done it online many times and I've never had my funds not appear instantly as she described. They are so nice on the phone though that I don't mind if I ever have to call.
