Can I bring my knitting needles on the airplane? Is that considered a weapon? I hate to have it taken away at the terminal.

Someone on the Stitch ’n’ ***** Boston message board recently passed along this information on whether or not you can take knitting needles on airplanes:

The Federal Government’s Transportation Security Administration web site includes a downloadable list of items permitted on airplanes. According to the list, knitting and crochet needles are permitted on planes, but some knitters on the Stitch ’n’ ***** message board said they or someone they knew were not allowed to take needles on a plane.

The person who posted the link suggested that if you’re flying and want to knit on board, you could print out the Transportation Security Administration’s list and take it with you to show the airport screeners that knitting needles are allowed. Another person suggested calling the airline you’re flying on ahead of time to check, since it’s possible they might not want to allow some items that the government does

Thanks for letting me know Kabuki. It's no big deal...I guess I won't bring it. We travel from California and it's a longggg flight. I'll take a nap instead

Just as a counterpoint, I just flew BOS-RSW and back again in February, and had 3 sets of straight, and 2 circular needles in my carryon. They never even opened my bag. And needles are indeed back on the "OK" list

According to the Official TSA site, Knitting and Crochet needles can be carried on and/or checked.

The advice I've received is to print out the TSA list, but to also bring a self-addressed stamped envelope with enough postage to mail yourself your project and needles. Better to be out postage than potentially lose your yarn, needles and all of the time spent knitting so far! Also, they suggest that you be courteous and not argumentative if the security person refuses to let you carry them on. I'm pretty sure that knitty.com has an article on travelling with your knitting.

TSA doesn't mind, I have seen people ask outright. HOWEVER Air Canada still bans them.

I have mailed my circulars to myself in past, if my flight originates on AC and I don't have checked luggage.

And if you are on an AC flight leaving the US, they usually don't mind. (Was at Dulles once, and a woman pulled out her knitting and the counter staff didn't bat an eye. I was drooling, since mine was sitting in my packed luggage because I was on an AC flight)

We have never had trouble bringing knitting needles on board. Only fly in the US, though.

We flew Boston to Orlando in November, and I wasn't even questioned about my knitting. I sat there quite happily for the entire flight, knitting and watching t.v. It was great and I'm looking forward to more of the same in July!
