Can I bring milk through security at the airport?

My son is 14 months and has a dairy allergy. Do you think they will allow me to bring a couple of bottles of Almond or Coconut milk through security next month? I know they allow formula but he is over a year old so I wasn't sure if they would allow me to bring something for him to drink. We have a long flight with a stop over and it's not like I would be able to buy something at the airport.

If you explain that it is something medically necessary for your child, it will fall under the exemption. TSA will most likely need to run a test on it, which would involve the bottles being opened. There *shouldn't* be any problems with this.

All you need is a Dr. notes stating the allergy. You can bring it on the plane your best beat would be to have an unopened container of it. You can get Soy milk at a few airports if that helps.

We have brought stuff through security for our toddler many times. If it is specific for the child and not a large amount they don't look twice. The only toddler supply that was ever checked for us was a LARGE can of powdered miralax. Obviously it set off a lot of alarms cause I still remember the look on their face and the comment, "We've got a powder!"

you can fill sippys of milk for him w/o issue. I've filled them lots of times for kids who were all 'too old' for sippys and no one questioned us, not at the Indy airport nor Orlando (filled them again before leaving the hotel). And they weren't all filled with milk. Some were ice tea and juices. (I emptied the fridge of drinks at home into sippys) At the Indy airport TSA had a special sniffer machine that they waved over the open sippy cup to 'smell' the ones that weren't milk. That's it.

Coconut milk?

How about buying some bottled water or juice after you go through security? How long is your flight? You say long, but is it 6 hours, or more? You should be allowed to bring one bottle of something, but not multiple ones. That's what we're allowed at our local airport (Logan, Boston).

Unfortunately he can't have soy either. Our flight is about 6 hours with a 2 hour layover so we are looking at about probably 10 hours total by the time we check in and leave the airport and that's assuming everything is on time. I could and probably will give him some water on the plane but he doesn't seem to drink enough of it and that is a long time to go without milk. Juice gives him diarrhea and I definitely don't need to deal with that on an airplane!:scared1: Basically DS drinks Almond or Coconut milk or water at home.

Thanks to those suggesting a Dr. note. I will get one and bring it with me. I know that the airport we are flying out of does not allow liquids in a sippy cup because when we flew last time, they actually confiscated a families cup and wouldn't give it back instead of just dumping out the liquid.:sad2: My son drinks from both so I figured I would be better off with a bottle. I was able to bring formula in a bottle when we flew a few months ago (same flight as TSA cup-dumping incident). Hopefully they will think it is formula again and not question it and if they do, I will show them the dr. note. Or do you think I would be better off being up front with them that it is not formula?

I would say Dr. note with an unopened 1/2 gallon of the milk you need. Medical issues are a different screening. I took 4 liquid containers of formula in DD baby bag when we flew last summer. I wasn't questioned at all. I would bring the cup empty and then just fill it as you go.

OP--I think you should go post this question on the Transportation Board. There are many frequent travelers who post over there, and I bet one can give you an accurate answer to your question. It would be better to know for sure before you go, and not just guess and hope, right?

:thumbsup2 Thanks, I just did. I think I needed a moderator to move it so I just posted again over there.

One bottle of milk, and a 12 oz bottle of water purchased after the screening should do it, plus he'll get fluids from solid foods, and you can get water on the plane too. That's if they don't let you through with extra liquids. Make sure you go through the family line at the airport.

I wouldn't think twice about bringing it through security. We recently brought apple juice boxes and fuit cups with liquids through security for our 20 month DD and nobody batted an eye. I just made sure to present them when we were going through the scanners. I opened the cooler they were in and put it directly next to my bag with liquids.

Can you buy the non-refrigerated versions of the milk?

I know they sell Silk in the juice box size containers at BJ's & I know I have seen coconut milk years ago at our grocery store on a shelf (still do today, I think).

My ds has a dairy allergy as well as peanut & tree nut so I can relate to what you are dealing with. Our last trip to Disney, I just bought him soy milk at the resort gift shop.

TSA officials can differ from one to the next. If you get one that's having a bad day, you might run into trouble. Best thing to do would be to bring along a doctor's note explaining your son's condition. Also, try calling the airline to see if they can arrange a special drink on board. I know they do it with food-can't hurt to try.

Can you buy it after you get thru security?

The airport we fly out of is extremely small and we are leaving very early in the morning so nothing will be open. We have a stop over in Houston but I highly doubt they sell Almond milk. I may be wrong though. I certainly can't count on it. I am just going to put some in a couple of bottles and declare it as formula. From what other's have said, I should have no problem as he is still considered a toddler.

I just flew with my 18 month old and had 3 8 oz bottles of milk with me and no problem at JFK in NY or MCO, they did open it and test it but that was it.
