Can I Bank Transferred Points?

If I have points transferred into my account from a resort other than my home resort, can those points be banked? Do they retain the use year of the home resort?

Are the rules published anywhere. I didn't see anything about it in the handbook.

Yes, subject to the banking deadlines.

They're supposed to...

We were just told two days ago that we could not bank transferred points. It took "special" approval to do that. I'm not sure why. If the points were banked before transfer then it would have the same affect, right?

I believe banked points could not be transferred. However I think points can be banked after transfer.

For example:
My Use Year is June at SSR. If I have 100 OKW points transferred into my account with a Dec 2006 use year, can I bank them? Getting back to my original question, do they still retain the Dec. use year and are banked for me to use in Dec. 2007- Nov. 2008?

I believe you have this part right. Don't forget, however, you could also have the person transfer points from next use year, and not have to worry about banking.

Transferring points is very tricky, and I would suggest you call MS and discuss your situation thoroughly with them and see what your best option is. There seems to be a BIG disconnect between what is supposed to happen with transferred point characteristics and what really happens, so I'd be very careful. (That's why I worded my original answer the way I did.)

I bought 7 points to be transferred into my account to compete a reservation. The seller sent me 9 since she had them left and didn't want to mess with just 2. When I modified my reservation at 2 months out, I was suprised when the cast member said, "Do you want to bank those 2 points"?
I know these points expired Sept 30th, but I was allowed to bank on July 27th and bank transferred points. Go figure.

Others have reported that banked points were not subject to the banking deadlines in the same way as regular points and were actually more flexible from that standpoint. You may want to talk to MS and possibly a supervisor about this issue.

I'm certainly no expert, but here's why I think you could bank those 2 points. MS used your 9 transferred points to complete your reservation first, so the 2 points left over were your points, thus you could bank them. I'm probably wrong, but the scenerio works, so maybe that's why. :confused3

Transferred points are bankable per the POS. And there are no specific limitations set on the banking in the POS other than the general 100%, 50%, 25% we usually discuss. While it could change and the answer might vary on one call vs another, others experiences in the past suggest that one may be able to bank 100% of transferred points until the last day of the use year.

I purchased resale. Where can I find a copy of the POS? I would think that these rules would be in black-in-white somewhere. But where? I'll give them a call tomorrow. I know, technically, you are not supposed to be compensated for point transfers either, so I would like to know the rules from Disney's standpoint.

You might need to get that as part of your purchase from your seller. You may be able to request one from DVC. Some of the provisions are also available online at the member's site.

DVC does provide the POS with direct purchases and they are not really bound to provide them to resale purchasers (since they have already provided that information with the original purchase of the contract).

The original POS did state that transferred points could NOT be banked and could not be used for rental reservations, but that language has been changed over time - and could be changed back at any time, much like the one transfer per year policy.

I'd give your guide a call to see if they would be willing to send a copy of the POS - it is certainly interesting reading.

DVC will send the POS to you for your resort and the multi site POS. Just call or email MS and ask for it. I believe they are required to send you the info and any changes though they haven't consistently done so.

Thank you all. I will call MS tomorrow.

That is correct. On two occasions last year when I transferred points into my account, I check with supervisors on more than one occasion and was told that transferred points do not follow the normal banking deadlines and percentages and that transferred points can be banked up until the last day of the use year.

And I did bank these on two separate occasions after the banking deadlines.

That is c/w what I've been told and seen posted but since I haven't experience it or seen enough formal posts to be certain, I didn't want to be too absolute in my posting. Plus it could change anytime.

I'd love to see this in writing. My guide was absolutely adamant that transferred points cannot be banked. (We were discussing the potential issues if we had 2 member accounts instead of one.)

I think it was 1999 when this changed, prior to that transferred points could not be banked. Look in your multi site POS, it's on page 45-46 of the latest one (2/06) and on 43-44 of the 7/03 edition. The part that deals with Transfer rules.

I did call Disney and they are sending me a POS. I would find it surprising if they did allow transferred points to be banked until the last day of the year for the very fact mentioned. What would keep someone from transfering points in order to avoid banking deadlines.

Thak you so much - we haven't closed on our purchase yet so had nothing definitive to read. I am going to call my guide and have her read the pertinent pages. It does seem, though that she should know the rules, especially as it has been in effect a minimum of 3+ yrs.

The problem is that the POS does not address the banking deadlines of transferred points. It could be changed but would require a formal change to the POS. Thus in the absence of any rule to point to, DVC would default to the least objectionable for the member in question.
